Elderly Parents and the Grown Children Who Care for Them

by Mae-Lin Yu Mendoza, LPC.

How does an adult child take care of an elderly parent(s)? My father's dementia probably began several years prior to his traumatic brain injury sustained in an auto accident in January 2008. His memory already showed signs of deterioration such as his inability to remember his zip code. In the spring of 2008, he stumbled in the home and hit his head. Surgery ensued to stop the bleeding of the brain. Rehabilitation involved speech, occupational and physical therapies. The psychiatrist prescribed medication to help with my father's agitated behaviors. Home health aides were brought in to assist in his daily care.

Sexuality is a Metaphor of Christ and the Church

By Geremy F. Keeton, M.MFT, LMFT

I think C.S. Lewis said it well about our sometimes misdirected human sexuality.

"It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased."

Elevated Status for Binge Eating Disorder

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) was published in 1994. The updated version, the DSM-5, will be released in May of this year. Although several changes will impact the eating disorder community, perhaps the most significant is the elevation of Binge Eating Disorder (BED) to a distinct category of eating disorder.
