Spiritual Resiliency:
Key Principles Following Trauma and Loss

by Janet M. Kamer, Ph.D.

Each of us will experience loss or trauma at some point in our lives: the illness or death of family members and friends; experiencing or witnessing emotional, physical, psychological or spiritual trauma; and eventually our own mortality. The media is filled every day with images and stories of violence and loss which we see and hear. Spiritual questioning about the meaning and purpose of life, our relationships with God, others, and ourselves commonly follows experiences of loss.

A Box of Legos

By Daniel P. Huerta, MSW, LCSW

There is nothing like seeing a young child dig into a box full of Legos! For a child, a box full of Legos offers endless possibilities for incredible creations.   Imagine if our lives could be compared to a box of Legos. God gives each of us the opportunity to choose what we do with our lives, which is like him giving us our own box full of Legos ready to be snapped together into a masterpiece. Our box is our box. We cannot trade it with anyone else nor can we build someone else's box of Lego's; however, the danger and the blessing is that we can influence one another throughout the building process.

New Findings Regarding Food Addiction

It has long been suspected by many that food has addictive qualities. Today, new evidence suggests that certain foods have the ability to disrupt the brain, much like an addictive drug.

The key is dopamine, a neurotransmitter that motivates people toward food, drugs, etc. Certain chemicals such as cocaine and morphine activate the same circuits in the brain as dopamine. When triggered, dopamine supplies the reward.
