Hope
By Barry Levy, LCSW, CCDC, LMFT
On this New Year's Day, 2013, we stand looking forward at a fresh, new year, while looking backwards at what we've experienced in the year behind us. As we do this, we need to hold on to hope, which is both a theological virtue and a psychological reality. A virtue builds up and steadies a person according to their nature in a way that orients them toward what God created them for: to "become partakers of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4). According to faith, our hope is based on God's promise, the future happiness to which He has called us: to be with Him forever.

Happy New Year!
By Bev Henry, LCSW
It's traditionally the time of new beginnings-when we wipe the slate clean from last year and begin anew.
Last summer, our city had a devastating fire that took two lives and 346 homes. Those who lost their homes are still displaced, as I write this, due to battles with insurance companies, complications with builders, decisions about rebuilding or moving, etc. These folks are forced to start anew, whether they rebuild in the same location or move on to new locations. Many have indicated they are eager to move forward-to leave the past behind and get on with the new.

Welcoming the New Year. . . Resolution-Free
At Timberline Knolls, we recognize how difficult the holidays can be for women and girls in recovery from an eating disorder or addiction. We also know that a new year can hold certain challenges.
First and foremost is often the desire to make a New Year's resolution pertaining to recovery. Most behavioral health professionals view such a promise as a set up to fail. Because eating disorders, mood disorders and addiction are serious illnesses, a New Year's resolution will no more put an end to them than it would to cancer or diabetes.
