| The First Thanksgiving Proclamation
Our Founding Fathers openly recognized God and relied on Him as our country was established. Many of their decisions were made because of their strong faith in God, including establishing Thanksgiving as a national holiday.
"Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection, aid and favors. . .Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these states to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the Beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be, that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country, and for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us."

Is My Anger Wrong?
Andrew Linder, L.C.S.W.
So many clients have asked me, "Is it wrong to feel angry?" In Ephesians 4:26, Paul wrote, "In your anger, do not sin." I believe this verse tells us that the emotion of anger is not wrong, but that our words and behaviors when we are angry can be (and very often are). Thus, while it is okay to feel angry, it is not okay to, for example, physically, verbally, or emotionally abuse others.
Anger can be positive in that it can motivate us to try to improve a situation. For example, if a person feels his or her personal boundaries have been violated, anger may empower that person to confront another in order to protect themselves and improve the relationship. But often when angry, it can be difficult for a person to confront another in a healthy way.

Superheroes Have Weaknesses Too!
Christina Browning, L.C.S.W.
Has anyone else noticed that our culture seems to be currently obsessed with superheroes? It seems every time I turn around there is a new superhero movie coming out. I recently saw a t-shirt that said, "Superheroes have issues too." It got me laughing and thinking, "Yah, right, but do they know it?" How often we admire the strength of a character, and fail to see the weakness. In discussing this with a friend of mine, they made the point that sometimes the weakness can be the strength. As we started looking at different superheroes, we quickly realized that the superpower generally came out of a weakness. They learned to use their weakness as strength.

Substance & Process Addiction
Similarities and Differences
There is no doubt that chemical addiction is escalating throughout our society as is the need for quality treatment. At Timberline Knolls, we're also identifying more process addictions among our residents. On the surface, substance addiction and process addiction seem so different. Substance addiction is dependent on chemicals such as alcohol, street drugs, or prescription medications being introduced into the body. Process addiction is characterized by a dependence on a behavior or set of behaviors such as exercise, sex, self-harm, shopping, or even internet gambling. But the reality is, the motivation behind either category of addiction is the same: mood alteration, meaning the activity is engaged in with the intent of avoiding negative feelings.
