Seth Haffrey surprised mom Julie CiFuentes, ELL teacher at Merrill, earlier this month with his first visit home from a 6-month tour in Aghanistan.

Ronald McDonald visited 4K students at Merrill earlier this month to give out books, a partnership of the Bucciferro family McDonalds restaurants and Turtle Creek Bookstore.

Attached is a picture of Advia Credit Union representatives giving our district a check for $2132 to go towards the Grow Your Own Scholarship program that will begin shortly.  The scholarship goes to students of color who are BMHS graduates pursuing a teaching degree and agree to come back to Beloit to teach.  The donation is made up of "points" Advia members accrue and then designate to the non-profit of their choice.

Happy Spring!  More than the outdoor scenery will be changing soon.  Charter Communications is going all digital as of April 1.  While our district news channel will remain on digital channel 991 for Charter subscribers, we will no longer have Channel 96.  Board meetings will still be available on Youtube - the link is found on our Board homepage:  beloitschools.net/board.  We have many good stories of achievement and district updates in this edition for you, and hope you enjoy them along with the balmy weather that is sure to head our way soon!

Dr. Tina Salzman to Lead Purple Knights

The School District of Beloit announced Tuesday the hiring of Dr. Tina Salzman as the new Beloit Memorial High School Principal.  The position is currently being held by Dr. Tom Johnson, who will transition to Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Administration this Spring.

Dr. Salzman has a rich background of experience that will help her lead the flagship of the district.  She comes most recently from Sun Prairie, serving as that district's Director of Teaching, Learning and Equity.  Before that, she served as the high school principal in Elkhorn, where she helped grow the Advanced Placement program into one earning honor roll status from the National College Board.  While in Elkhorn, she also helped implement Project Lead the Way programming, increased the number of business education partnerships and grew the number of career and technical education course offerings.

Destination Imagination Teams Advance to State
School district teams from south central and southwest Wisconsin came together this past Saturday, March 22, to demonstrate their abilities to "think outside of the box" during regional Destination Imagination® competition.  Four teams from the School District of Beloit have earned the right to advance to state competition with two teams from Morgan Elementary School earning first place in their categories, and two teams from Aldrich Middle School earning second place in their categories.

Aldrich pirates capture a win in "Laugh Art Loud".
Challenges varied from fine arts to technical, with research, problem-solving, teamwork and creativity being core skills needed to master each task which ranged from incorporating a foreign artist's work into a live action comic strip, complete with caption contraption, and one asking for development
of tools to survive in an extreme environment.
Aldrich Students win big in "Going to Extremes".

Orchestra to Learn from Music Leaders

Community Invited to Hear Students Perform

Beloit Memorial High School String Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra students will be receiving multiple evaluations from famed orchestra leaders at this year's High School Band and Orchestra Festival in the Wisconsin Dells next month.

This year's clinicians include: Dr. Charles Rochester Young, an award-winning composer; Mark Leiser, Sinfonietta Conductor for the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra (WYSO), and Brendan Caldwell, Associate Professor and Director of Bands at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The Beloit Community is invited to hear a free concert by the BMHS Orchestra on Monday, March 31, 2014, at 7 p.m., at Beloit Memorial High School, 1225 Fourth Street.  Pieces to be performed range from classical Mozart to edgy Led Zepplin.

Day "On", Not Off
District to Fully Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day
For next year's calendar, district officials have added Martin Luther King Jr Day as a "Day On", not a day off from school.  District officials felt this day needed more emphasis by dedicating the day to learning about the civil rights leader, including adding in student service projects.

A committee is already making plans to develop a plan that all schools will participate in, including age-appropriate curriculum pieces and celebrations.  The community is invited to take part in the Day On, by serving as speakers, working in the classrooms and providing service projects for students to lend their talents to.  We will soon have a website on the community area of our website for those interested in participating to share ideas.
