Holiday BowTo our friends and colleagues,

With less-than-festive visions of fiscal cliffs, we've had a little trouble gearing up for sugar plums, mistletoe and fruit cake this year.  Fortunately, the oxytocin is kicking in, and we are now fully launched into celebration mode. Oxytocin is a hormone that increases feelings of trust and social bonding, particularly when we are exposed to music relating to special times.  This probably explains that "flood of neural memories" we tend to  experience every December. (The inclination to do bodily harm to little drummer boys would qualify as an exception.)   We're hoping all of you have been exceptionally good in 2012 - and wish you luck in making a convincing case to Santa!

Get into the spirit by visiting the IA Holiday Workshop, where our Elves are pushing the resident silkworms to greater glory.  Gifts aplenty, many of which are meaningful, some, just plain fun!  Happy Holidays!

Speaking of which, you ARE in luck. The Little Drummer Boy hasn't discovered Facebook. Yet!

2. HOLIDAY JINGLES & JANGLES
"WHO KNEW" NOTES ON THE CLASSICS

"Jingle Bells" was written in 1857 for a THANKSGIVING church service.

"White Christmas" was originally sung by Bing Crosby in a 1942 film called "Holiday Inn."  (It remains the most recorded holiday song).

"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was initially rejected by Gene Autry, believing that it did not fit his rough and ready cowboy image.  In 1949, it became the biggest seller of his career.

"The Little Drummer Boy" was first popularly recorded in 1955 by the Trapp Family Singers (of Sound of Music fame) as a song entitled "Carol of  the Drum," based on an earlier Czech carol. They retired, shortly thereafter.
