Dear friends and colleagues,
Bulletin: hurricanes can put a really serious damper on holiday spirit! Counting our west coast blessings (gee, no earthquake this year), IA sends a Thanksgiving gobble-out to all those suffering through M. Nature's seaboard hissy. And here's a thought from the late Erma Bombeck, a welcome reminder of the brighter side: "What we're talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November, when NOBODY DIETS! I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving!? Kevin James had another take, a little less literate: "Thanksgiving is not a good day to be my pants." Also not a good visual.
Hardships aside, seems like most anything's better than being a turkey. Special wishes to the good folks head-slapped by Sandy, and a Happy Thanksgiving to one and all from the IA team. Visit the IA Showroom while the gift selection is still stuffed. A very cool bird's eye view of the complete Awareables necktie and scarf collection. www.iawareables.com/servlet/-strse-Neckties/Categories www.iawareables.com/servlet/-strse-Scarves/Categories

1. DIABETES / INSULIN NEW DESIGN
| A 21ST Century epidemic. Now on silk! | | Diabetes Scarf Now Available |
 | | Diabetes Necktie Now Available |
Pity your pancreas, especially around holiday time, with its thankless job of balancing those holiday carbs with just the right amount of insulin. Most of us are fortunate that our pancrea-i dutifully perform their tasks, ensuring that our blood sugar is the right octane for our cells to manufacture energy, efficiently. Not so, however, for Diabetic patients, who are forced to deal with a carbohydrate metabolism out of balance. Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in our culture, affecting an inordinate number of adults AND children - simply not acceptable.
Our new design features the very intricate Insulin molecule, a polypeptide hormone composed of amino acids, accented by the villainous sugar (glucose) cube, which - just our luck - lurks to excess in just about everything tempting (or not). Diet control, exercise, education and awareness are the keys to controlling this serious threat to public health.
"Start the Conversation" with the first design of its kind in the universe. Besides making an important statement, the IA Diabetes/Insulin necktie and scarf are standout bits of silk finery. Guaranteed, no monitoring or blood draw required.
Here's a nice message from an "early adapter" recipient of our new Diabetes/Insulin necktie. A perfect example of good glucose balance!
"Thank you Thank you Thank you! From the bottom of my pancreas which every Diabetes Specialist will tell you is much deeper than from the heart!" from DGJ, RN. Diabetes Educator

2. A THANKSGIVING STORY
| A courageous Mom and her craft
Dr. Mark O. Martin is an associate professor of Biology at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, where he teaches Microbiology to seniors, and Introductory Cell and Molecular Biology to freshmen. He is also an avowed "microbial supremacist," and as such, a kindred soul to our Awareables flock.
Some years ago, using IA scarves, Mark's mom, Wanda, fashioned three very special vests, elevating Mark to the very cutting edge of sartorial microbia. Rarely have E. coli, anthrax and various foodborne felons been so creatively collected and couture-ized.
Mark has remained in touch with us over the years, and we were sad to hear of Mom's passing this past October, after a courageous 14-year struggle against ovarian cancer. To learn more about Dr. Martin, Mom's skills and the "thing" he has for microbes, check out his blog at:

Meanwhile, here are the colorful and macroscopic results of Wanda Martin's loving efforts - gifts to a son, and surely Thanksgiving remembrances of special kind. Wanda Martin's Vests made from Foodborne Six, E. coli, and Anthrax Scarves.

3. IMPROVEMENT IN MARKETPLACE HYGIENE EFFORTS
| |
Some thankful signs of greater awareness
W e've noticed a trend in many of the stops on our daily circuit. More and more, we're spotting the fruits of intense public health marketing efforts reminding (admonishing?) the public about the advantages of hand washing or sanitizing. Hospital studies have shown that convenient sanitizing stations go a long way towards increasing compliance by professionals. Stands to reason, they will do the same for consumers.
Here are some sanitizing stations we've come across recently - market, liquor store, hospital, elevator, hotel -, reminding consumers about hand hygiene, the simplest, most effective means of limiting infection. Looks like some of our common area vendors are starting to "get it." (Hotel remotes? You don't want to know!). Then again, if you eat sushi, you're on your own.

4. CDC CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT PATIENTS IN OUTPATIENT CLINICS
| |
Noteworthy efforts in less-regulated environments
Here are a few recent CDC guidelines for outpatient clinics, designed to protect patients who are increasingly receiving care outside the hospital environment. Granted, these would appear to be "obvious," but compliance can be maddeningly careless.
1. One needle, one syringe, one patient. 2. Administer meds from single dose vials to one patient, only. 3. Wash or sanitize hands before - and after - use of gloves. 4. Change protective gowns and gloves for care of each patient 5. Draw up medications only on a clean area free of any potential contamination.
The bad news: you have only to watch carefully in many facilities, observing just how often these simple guidelines are "overlooked."

5. HOLIDAY SHIPPING SCHEDULE
| |
Procrastination can only lead to heartbreak and self-loathing.
Alert: Watch for our post card reminders and be sure to visit us at iAwareables.com
US Postal Service: Need we say it? Order as early as possible! We cannot guarantee the Rudolf 2012 hybridic, nor his volt-juiced courier pals for long hauls on short notice. After all, they only get 35 miles on a charge. Ouch.
Express 2-3 Day, seriously tardy deadline: Dec 20 A.M. (PT) |

Self-control (at holidays) is inhumane and vastly overrated...so let your Thanksgiving be filled with high caloric, no-guilt festivity and good cheer. We've never been sure how to spell "dicsipline [sic]" anyway. Enjoy those good times with family and friends - needed now more than ever. UNTIL OUR SPECIAL, CRASSLY-COMMERCIAL DECEMBER EDITION, Awareably yours,
RPF
