A message from Laury Hammel,
Longfellow President                        Find us on Facebook

Dear Members,

The management and staff of Longfellow wish everyone a Happy New Year!   We hope you have a clear and inspiring set of goals that will serve as your North Star as you go through the days of 2013.  Longfellow exists to support our members in achieving your health and fitness goals.  Our staff is there for you to:
  • Answer any fitness or health-related questions you might have
  • Offer programs that will take your health and fitness level to a new level
  • Assist you in setting challenging and practical goals for 2013
  • Support you emotionally and mentally to do what it takes to achieve optimum health and fitness
This newsletter shares only a few of the programs available to you that will bring you life-long health, as well as much joy and happiness.

We're also excited to bring back the Longfellow Service Star of the Month Award--our staff acknowledgement program.  Longfellow is fortunate to have so many dynamic and caring people who work to Wow our members every day and in every way possible.  We encourage you to congratulate Mike Gallagher when you see him around the club!

Yours in health,

Laury Hammel, President

It takes a Team to Reach Your Optimum Fitness!
Impossible Longfellow has been designing fitness programs for over 30 years and if we've learned one thing about how people succeed in getting fit, it is this:  If you want to achieve your optimum fitness, you need a coach or trainer to design your workout routines and to guide and motivate you.

Study after study proves this statement to be true.  It's obviously true for elite athletes (just watch the Australian Tennis Open to see the results of their team of trainers) and why should it be any different for you--your health deserves world-class support and training.

Longfellow has assembled a dynamic team of professionals committed to bringing lifelong health and transformation to our members. Below are three terrific ways that you can create your own team to help you keep your New Year's resolutions, and to accomplish your health and fitness goals.

Fitness Consultation
To help get your New Year started off right, Longfellow has started a new program to keep you on track and help chart your progress throughout the year! The Fitness Consultation Program is a new, fun, and informative program to help you see the best results possible for 2013 and beyond.

The program features a one-on-one meeting with a fitness professional four times a year for review, assessment, and suggestions for your current workout routine so that you can see maximum results!  The Fitness Consultations also inform you about different activities in the club you might not know exist, including Personal Training, Nutrition, Informative Seminars, Free Classes and other Special Programs.

Personal Training
If you look around you will notice that every day more and more members and staff are working with a Personal Trainer--and for many good reasons.  Here are just a few of the many benefits to hiring a personal trainer:
  • A customized fitness program designed specifically for your need
  • A trainer that can serve as a problem-solver and listener with the inevitable life challenges that arise
  • Motivation and one more reason to help you adhere to your workout routine and your New Year's resolutions
Longfellow has many excellent certified Personal Trainers who have been trained in the latest and most effective ways to train folks of all ages, genders, body types, and levels of fitness.   If you've never experienced a set of personal training sessions, now may be the right time.

Small Group Training
Many folks find small group training to be exactly what the doctor ordered to take your fitness to the next level.  Longfellow has several small group training programs available including:
  • Fitt Club
  • Kinesis
All of these small group training programs have the following benefits:
  • They are fun and the time flies!
  • You will get fitter faster
  • A great way to make friends and push each other to new levels of fitness
Participating in any of the above programs are less expensive than you might imagine. Please speak with a membership representative, a personal trainer, or one of our Fitness Consultants to find out more about these exciting programs.

January Service Star of the Month - Mike Gallagher!

Mad Dog Service Star with Myke and Laury

Congratulations to Michael Gallagher for being honored as the first Longfellow Wayland Service Star of the Month in the Twenty-First Century!  And we can't think any staff member more deserving.

Mike
, otherwise known as 'Mad Dog', has been part of the Longfellow Maintenance Team since January 2012.  If you see a blur of activity passing you by, it is Mike, hurrying along to the next job that needs to be done.  He always keeps himself busy - cleaning, sorting, organizing and somehow getting as much done as he can! Ask him anything and he will take care of it immediately. He is friendly and loves to play with the kids and chat with members.  He is passionate about doing his job 100% and always goes the extra mile.

Mike came to us from the Laconia Athletic and Swim Club in Laconia, New Hampshire, where he worked for nine years. While at the Laconia Club, Mike entered the Guiness Book of World Records, riding a spin bike for over 115 hours straight, raising over $60,000 for New Hampshire Children-in-Need programs. His passions are biking, winter camping, and ice climbing. He has completed over three dozen 300 mile bike rides, and since 1998 has been a  professional mountain bike racer. He also was a professional drummer, and toured the world with his heavy metal band.

Check out these testimonial raves:

"Mike is always willing to help out way beyond his list of responsibilities.  His attitude is exceptional and positive - ready to help and go beyond your expectations every time." - Group Exercise Director, Lisa Wilkins

"Mike is always cleaning, and very conscientious, even to the point of always turning off the cardio tv's that are not being used while he is cleaning. We should all have his energy. He's incredible and does a fabulous job!" - Longfellow member Christine Vasco

We are thrilled to honor him with the inaugural re-instituting of the monthly Service Star Award. He is a very worthy recipient, and will be a great standard bearer for all Longfellow employees to strive to emulate. Thank you, Mike, for all that you do for Longfellow - we are so lucky that you are part of the Longfellow family!

Water Exercise News

Some believe there are many obstacles to getting in the pool. Let's clear up some of these myths so that you can make the pool part of your healthy 2013!

Healthmasters 2011 I can't swim.

Our buoyancy belts will keep you afloat. We have shallow water classes too.

I'm allergic to chlorine.

Our pool has a salt water chlorination system - it is much easier on the eyes, nose, skin, and clothes.

I can't lose weight in the pool.

Energy expended = calories burned, no matter where you workout.

Water exercise is too easy.

All levels of ability can get a great workout in the water. The resistance you create in the water determines the level of the workout. You can work at a hard, moderate or light pace - whatever your needs are for that day.

I can't keep up.

Our classes are designed to accommodate all levels of ability. Come at the time that is convenient for you. Our professional staff will coach you through the workout.

It takes longer to get ready.

It's about the same as a non-water workout. Most people take a shower after they workout on land or in the water.

It's not appealing in the winter.

Our pool is kept at a pleasant 83 degrees. When you are moving, the water is a place to warm up when feeling cold. Enjoy the hot tub after class.

I don't have a full hour.

Our policy is flexible. If you are running late, it's easy to warm up independently and then join the group. If you need to leave early, just save a few minutes to cool down and stretch.

I'm not injured.

Water exercise is great for injury PREVENTION. Water exercise classes and Aqua Physical Therapy have different, but complimentary goals.

I'm training for the marathon/tennis tournament, I need to maximize my time on land.

Water exercise is part of maximizing your time. It includes cardiovascular, muscle strengthening and flexibility done SIMULTANEOUSLY.

I really love to workout to music.

Look on the schedule for our special classes set to great music.

I don't like the water.

Sometimes it takes 3-4 classes (or more) to acclimate a person. Remember, getting into the pool will help decrease injuries and increase the capacity to do the things you love to do on land. Make it a goal for 2013!

Nutrition News

January is a perfect time to discuss nutritional goals and dreams. Take on the challenge of including a fruit or vegetable with every meal, including breakfast. For some, it seems easy, but for others, it sounds impossible. Whatever group you're in, the biggest challenge is consistency. Even for those of us who love fruits and vegetables, it's hard to achieve this at every meal, every day. Short cuts that count:

Cherry TomatoesLettuce and tomato on a sandwich

Spinach and mushrooms mixed in an omelet or served in an egg sandwich

Grab and go with a banana or apple when you don't have time for breakfast

Steamers frozen vegetables-they taste almost fresh

Onions and peppers on top of pizza or on a burger

Carrots and dip (try Bolthouse Farms Ranch salad dressing for a quick and easy dip that the whole family will enjoy)

Blueberries HandfullPop in some grape or cherry tomatoes while preparing a meal

Roast a big tray of vegetables in advance and pull them from a storage container in your refrigerator

Strawberries dipped in chocolate as a "fun" way to eat fruit

Apple sauce or fruit cups

1-3 pieces of dried fruit

Peanut butter and raisins or a banana

A Living In balance group favorite "funky" mix: peanut butter and baby spinach sandwich-it tastes like Thai food!!!

Let us know how it goes. HAPPY 2013!!!

Natick Racquet Club News

Tennis Group We would like to thank Holly Osler for her more than 20 years of service at the Racquet Club. Holly is moving to Florida with her husband and son. Over the years that Holly has been the adult program director, our grand prix ladies doubles play in the mornings has increased tremendously, as well as the various programs Holly has started such as men's drills, women's member-guest, cardio tennis and a myriad of other programs - especially the singles flex league and mixed doubles on Sunday evenings.

There are some major changes happening at the Natick Racquet Club with both the adult programs as well as our junior team play.

The programs are coordinated with the Longfellow Club in Wayland, so that the programs are open to members of both tennis facilities. These programs will be continuing under the directorship of Deb Ginn, along with Becca Bennett. If interested in in any of these programs, please contact Deb Ginn at natickracquetclub@gmail.com.

Above is a picture of Holly (with clipboard) and members of the Tuesday Grand Prix, one of the three Grand Prix doubles which run on Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings.

Our junior programs and clinics are in full swing for session II. We have now started an orange ball junior team which plays on Saturdays. Matches are held both at the Natick Racquet Club as well as at the other three clubs involved. Students in our orange ball clinics have really been excited about the play this year.

There are also continuing opportunities every week for juniors in our match play program on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. If interested, e-mail Pat Loranger at NatickMatchPlay@live.com.

Thank you Holly!

We would like to thank Holly Osler for her 22 years of great service! Holly spent that time as our Natick Racquet Club's amazing adult program director.

Holly Leaving
From left: Laury Hammel, Holly Osler and Shelia Weinstock

A "going away" party was given to Holly at the Racquet Club Friday, January 11th to commemorate her her long service with the Longfellow Clubs.

Holly started at Natick in 1991 when there were very few programs offered. She started the women's Grand Prix doubles play groups and that program has since evolved into three mornings a week and comprises over 80 women. She also started many other special programs at the club such as men's drills, women's member guest round robins, singles flex leagues, adult clinics, mixed doubles, as well as other special events.

She was also instrumental in her help with the organization of DBH teams, CMITA teams, and USTA teams at Natick and Longfellow.

Holly is a high level tennis player in her own right and for many years played on the Division I DBH team at Natick and represented one of New England's teams in the Senior Women's Intersectional Team Championships one year.

Holly and her family are moving to Florida and she is looking forward to having more time to spend playing tennis and golf and enjoying the warm weather.

We thank her for the legacy she leaves at Natick and wish her the best for the future!
