A Letter from Longfellow's President                      Find us on Facebook

Dear Members and Friends,

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! The management and staff of Longfellow certainly have much to be grateful for.  We know we are blessed to have jobs where we work with really good people--our members are wonderful folks, and we know it.

In a recent meeting with the Longfellow maintenance staff, several maintenance staff members commented how much joy they get from cleaning the club and making it special for our members  They shared how friendly and kind our members are.

This Thanksgiving season has been particularly special with Longfellow being awarded by the Boston Globe as one of the "Top Places To Work" in Massachusetts.  My induction into the Social Venture Network Hall of Fame was a life-time highlight for me, and having my mother, brother, my business partner Myke, two of my children, and Steve Denning, my best friend since we were 12 from Utah, was really special.  It was good to feel the love.

Longfellow has been working for 40 years to make Longfellow the best club anywhere, and we don't plan on resting on our laurels.  We will continue to dedicate every day to making Longfellow be a great place to workout and a pure joy to be a member.

We wish you and your family a joyful holiday season.

Yours in health,

Laury Hammel, President

Social Venture Network Selects
Longfellow President Laury Hammel for its Hall of Fame

Laury with Judy Wicks at SVN hall of Fame
Laury Hammel
with Judy Wicks
On November 13th,  Longfellow President Laury Hammel was inducted into the Social Venture Network Hall of Fame, along with other socially responsible business leaders including the founders of such iconic businesses as Ben and Jerry's, Eileen Fisher, Stonyfield Farm Yogurt, Seventh Generation, and Cliff Bar.

SVN's Hall of Fame Celebration was held at the Gotham Hall in New York City and honored, in person, 25 of the most innovative and influential leaders of the socially responsible business movement with the newly-created SVN Impact Award.  Every award winner was rigorously vetted by a panel of 20 judges representing corporate peers, industry experts, and business and organizational leaders.

Twenty five years ago, the founders of Social Venture Network (SVN) had a vision for a better business model - one that would simultaneously benefit investors, employees, local communities and the planet. SVN became the premiere force for cultivating entrepreneurs dedicated to "profit with a purpose."  Now, upon the 25th Anniversary of our founding, SVN brought together values-driven business leaders and impact investors for the Social Venture Network Hall of Fame Celebration.

Laury was inducted for his work with SVN over the past 25 years, as well as specifically for founding the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE)
with Judy Wicks, the founder of the White Dog Cafe in Philadelphia. BALLE focuses on creating real prosperity by connecting leaders, spreading solutions that work, and driving investment toward local economies. BALLE equips entrepreneurs with tools and strategies for local success, and provides the national forum for the most visionary local economy leaders and founders to connect, build their capacity and innovate.

This prestigious Hall of Fame award comes on the heels of The Longfellow Clubs being selected by the Boston Globe as one of the "Top Places to Work" in Massachusetts.  Longfellow has dedicated itself to building a business that contributes to all of our stakeholders and it feels good to be acknowledged for our efforts.

Two Natick Racquet Club USTA women's teams just won the USTA National 4.5 Senior Women's and the 4.5 Open Women's Tennis Team Championships.   The Natick Racquet Club felt fortunate to have had two teams qualify and represent New England in the national championships, but to have both teams win is a stunning achievement and cause for celebration.

Winning a national team championship is a first for The Longfellow Clubs, and we know of no other club in New England that has ever accomplished this rare double!  Wow!

The Senior 4.5 team won their division national championship October 19th - 21st in Palm Springs, CA. The Open 4.5 women's team won their division national championship playing in Tucson, AZ. on October 26th - 28th.

Members of both The Longfellow Club in Wayland and the Natick Racquet Club comprise the majority of the players on both teams.

This is an exceptional achievement and we congratulate all the players on their terrific play and team spirit. It is a "once in a lifetime" achievement to have such stalwart results from two teams playing out of one club.

In winning both championships,  the teams had to win their flight of four teams from different USTA sections around the United States, and then win the semi finals and the finals against two other sectional teams.

The senior team beat Middle States in their finals and the open team beat Eastern States in their final win. We congratulate both teams on such stalwart performances!

One Step Closer to the Cure

Thank you to everyone who walked in the 5 Mile Breast Cancer Walk on Sunday Nov. 4th from Lumina at Longfellow. It was a beautiful day and we raised $900 for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute! May this help find a cure!

24 Years and Still Counting!!
Cancer Walk
Longfellow's Dick Gellis & Beth O'Neill

Dick Gellis and Beth O'Neill recently walked 13 miles from Babson College in Wellesley to Copley Place in Boston to help raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Jimmy Fund.

Dick and Beth, along with approximately 7500 other walkers, raised a total of seven and a half million dollars to fight children's cancer.

For many years Longfellow Club members and employees have pledged money to help with this very important Walk.

Please congratulate Dick on his 24th Jimmy Fund Walk. Dick's legs hadn't even recovered yet, and already he started forming a Team of Longfellow members and employees to do next year's.

Started in 1989, next year will mark the 25th anniversary of the Jimmy Fund Walk. Longfellow members and employees are encouraged to join the Longfellow Club's team and walk the Marathon route from Hopkinton to Boston. You may choose to walk 26.2 , 13, 5, or 3 miles.  That will mark a quarter century of Dick walking to help children with cancer. If you'd like to walk with Team Longfellow for next year's walk, please call The Longfellow Club at 508-358-7355 and ask for Dick. The tentative date is Sunday, September 8, 2013.
