A Letter from Longfellow's President                      Find us on Facebook

Dear Members and Friends,

Summer is here and it's wonderful to be able to exercise outside.  It's also nice to know that on really hot days or rainy days, Longfellow is available as a climate-controlled place where you can work out comfortably and safely every day of the week, no matter what the weather brings.

We're thrilled to announce that the LongfellowClubs.com web site has been completely re-designed.  It's now easier than ever to find out about Longfellow and all the various programs we offer.  We want to give a shout-out to all of the members who were willing to share their stories on video giving us a permanent record of the joy and satisfaction that Longfellow brings our members.  Our new web site will feature one of these member videos on the home page. Check it out.

Our various youth camps are in full swing and we welcome you to find out about the various camps that Longfellow offers--tennis, adventure, arts, and golf camps. This has been our most popular summer for camp registrations ever, but we still have a few spots open this summer--the camps run through August 31. Check out our new web site or see the stories below for more information.

Have a fun and relaxing summer,

Laury Hammel, President

The Longfellow Children's Center is going full steam ahead for summer! We still have openings in all of our camp programs. For ages 5 to 12, our Arts Camp offers an amazing array of hands-on art media for the child who just loves to create! Your budding artist will also dance, do some improvisation and still have a swim lesson each morning!

Little ArtistsCamp Longfellow provides lots of active indoor and outdoor fun for ages 3 to 12, including sports like tennis and basketball, swim lessons daily, games and water fun, arts and crafts, dance and martial arts.

Our Ladybugs, ages 12 months to 3 years, play games, dance, have gym, art and music classes, and splash around in our baby pool daily.

Our CIT program focuses on kids 11-15 who are interested in learning to care for younger children. These young adults learn to teach swim classes, take CPR and first aid, help campers in all their activities and have some fun free swim and game times of their own!

All of our camp programs feature full lunch buffets and healthy snacks daily. Our brochure can be downloaded from our website (www.longfellowclubs.com) or call us for registration information today at 508-358-0710.

GUMP!

The MILES ACROSS AMERICA game is off & running! Members each get a flag to move themselves off across America trying to reach 3600 miles by taking the NORTH, MIDDLE or SOUTH route! Each minute you exercise...that equals 1 mile! Good Luck to all!!!! Keep active all summer no matter where you are!!!!

The next group exercise class schedule change will be July 30 - September 9. Please pick up a schedule after July 23rd. The FALL schedule will BEGIN on SEPT. 10th. It will be available after August 28, 2012.   The schedule will be changing some due to teacher's availability, times & days.

PLEASE NOTE: At Longfellow Wayland - Studio 1 WILL be CLOSED from Monday, August 27th - Sunday, September 2nd while the floor is being refinished. There will be a SPECIAL schedule that week for the Longfellow Studio 2. We will be back on the floor Monday September 3rd.

With the summer months coming up, please remember that many classes are subbed out due to teachers being away & hopefully all classes will have a sub. Also, we need an average of 8 members to keep a class on the schedule & if not, it will come off during those summer months. August is a VERY SLOW month, so many classes will be coming off until the fall schedule begins. I apologize for any inconvenience to anyone.

LUMINA is closed from 2-4 pm Monday - Thursday & 2 pm on Fridays as of May 29 - September 7th.   LUMINA will be closed on LABOR DAY.

Kids in PoolSummer is a great time at the pool!! There are some great programs being offered this year. We have a summer swim team which runs from June 25th through the championships in early August. The practices are Monday through Thursday from

9-9:55 am or Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7-8pm. The kids get great instruction from our experienced coaches and get to practice what they learn in weekday afternoon meets throughout the season. Awesome!

We also offer Red Cross swim lessons for members from 11:10-11:40 am. They are offered Monday through Thursday and you sign up by the week. Having lessons 4 days in a row really helps kids learn faster and the pool is open at 11:40 so you can stick around to practice and have fun.

Come spend some time trying some of the classes or just relax and play at the pool this summer. The full summer schedule started June 25th, so be sure to grab the new lap lane schedules and diving board hours.

See you at the pool!

Shaping Up - Exercise Class Etiquette

When the fitness-minded get single-minded about their workouts, things can get pretty grim in the gym. People can lose all consideration for - or even awareness of - those around them. Maybe it's all those mirrors!

The very fact that gym activities are so "me"-based makes courtesy an absolute necessity to minimize distractions and to promote safety. It's a place where bad manners can cause physical injury to you or others. For example, avoid joining an exercise group already in session: your arrival will be distracting to those in the group, and you may have missed important safety information given at the beginning of the workout.

Clean MandalaHere are some other considerations:

Dress for success. The key words are clean and functional. Avoid anything that drapes or dangles. Jewelry can pose a hazard to you, especially while working out. In addition, you shouldn't walk around in flimsy footwear or stocking feet. And please watch where you are going. Walking into a piece of equipment can result in a broken toe or foot.

Bag your gym bag. (or at least stow it far out of the way of foot traffic.) Somebody could trip over it, get tangled in the straps and fall. Lock your gear in the dressing room.

Avoid Spills. Keep your water in an enclosed, unbreakable container.

Keep it quiet. Keep talking to a minimum in classes. Rest those cell phones. They should be turned off or on silent mode.

Cleanliness is next to gymliness. Marinated gym clothes (the kind you leave in the trunk of your car or your locker and then wear them again), fragrances and grime are guaranteed to help you lose friends and transform your group activity into a solitary performance.

Keep your cool. So you always work out in the corner but someone beat you to it this time. Group classes operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Let off your steam in the workout, not by lobbing nasty salvos at the "offender."

Forget flying solo. By definition, classes are group activities. So avoid doing your own routine. Do your best to keep up with the class.

Don't crowd. Consider others' exercise space and don't crowd someone who has arrived in class before you.

Towel off (not just yourself.) Your equipment deserves to be wiped down, too.

Following these guidelines will guarantee a successful, safe and enjoyable workout. It's all about sportsmanship, really. And sportsmanship is simply good manners with an application of perspiration.

Thanks, and see you at the gym!

Longfellow Hosted the
2012 Massachusetts Senior Pickleball Games

Pickleball SliceOn June 9th and 10th, the Longfellow Club's Zip Zone hosted the 2012 Massachusetts Senior Pickleball Games.

The sport is a mix somewhere between tennis and ping pong, played on a small tennis court with over-sized paddles and and a plastic ball about the size of a baseball. Courts are large enough to allow for doubles play, yet small enough too for some fierce volleys and extreme fun. If you've ever held a racquet or ping pong paddle, or even played beach tennis, then you'll be a quick study at Pickleball. Drop by Zip Zone soon and join us for some great games!

Over 40 participants competed in Pickleball games in the Massachusetts Senior Pickleball Games in several age categories for the right to advance to the National Senior Pickleball Games in Cleveland in 2013.

Congratulations to three Longfellow club members who were winners in their divisions:

  • Anne Gottlieb, who won a gold ball as the winner in the Mixed Doubles in the 65-69 age division
  • Rutty Guzdar, who also won a gold ball as the winner in the Mixed Doubles in the 70-74 age division
  • Adi Guzdar, who won a silver ball as the finalist in the Men's Doubles in the 75-79 age division

Pickleball is played at the Zip Zone on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6:00 PM.

For information and to reserve a Pickleball court, please call Dick Gellis at The Longfellow Club, 508-358-7355.

The first session is free and lessons are available.
