A Letter from Longfellow's President                      Find us on Facebook

Dear Members and Friends,

We know that many of our members, staff, and neighbors spent some time without power in their homes after the recent snow storm. We're glad that everyone in our community is now back on the grid and that life is getting back to normal. Fortunately, Longfellow never lost power at our clubs in Wayland, Sudbury, or Natick.   However, our sister club, the Adirondack Club in Franklin, did lose power and was forced to shut down the club for two days.

During these power outages some members came into the club to workout and to use the facilities that they couldn't use at home.   As many of you know from personal experience, when a crisis happens in our community, Longfellow wants to do what we can to be of service.   And, just as we did when the last hurricane struck, after the storm Longfellow opened our doors for our neighbors (whether members or not) to come to the club at no charge and use our showers, WiFi, caf, and to charge their cell phones. We want people to know that everyone is always welcome at Longfellow.

I hope that you are as enthusiastic as we are about our campaign to `Make Longfellow Sparkle' and that you are enjoying the changes.   I'm sure you've noticed our new painter, Mike Gallagher, who is splashing a new set of colors around the interior of the club. And the Women's Locker room remodeling began on October 24th. We've been making excellent progress which is detailed in an article below. And on top of all of this, beginning in late November, we'll be installing brand new rugs everywhere.

Below is another article that I want to call special attention to, about two special fundraising events coming up that honor the memory of Lauren Astley.

We at Longfellow wish you and your loved ones a very special Thanksgiving celebration.

With gratitude,

Laury Hammel, President

Remodeling of the Women's Locker Rooms Begins!

sparkle

On October 24th, the construction began in building a brand new women's locker room which will include the following:

  • Brand new showers and locations with an additional shower added
  • All brand new tile everywhere - floors, walls, showers, and steam room.
  • A new more convenient room layout and design
  • New rugs
  • New interior touches designed specifically for our members by our interior decorator
  • Completely rebuilt sauna, including new benches, walls, and floor tile
  • New handicap shower with private dressing room located just inside the entrance from the pool

We're confident that our women members will enjoy the new look, and we thank you for your patience during the construction process.

Upcoming Fundraisers for the Lauren Astley Memorial Fund
lauren astley fundraiser fashion show
We'd like to let you know about two upcoming events that will be supporting the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund.

On Saturday, November 26th from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM, at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, there will be a fashion show and silent auction to celebrate the life of Lauren Dunne Astley.

The title of the event is "Keep on Sparkling:  Moving Forward in the Spirit of Lauren Dunne Astley".  All proceeds will go directly to the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund her parents set up in her honor.  The Fund's mission is to promote dynamic educational programs, particularly those in the areas of the development of healthy teen relationships, the arts, and community service.

Longfellow is also planning on holding an event to support the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund. It will be held on Monday January 2nd, at the Longfellow club in Wayland. The exact program of the event is being determined in the upcoming days, and we will keep you informed of the exact details as the we get closer to the date.

We invite all of our members to attend one or both of these events, in order to continue keeping Lauren's sparkling spirit alive in our hearts.

Growing Champions for Life!

david benzel winners conectionOn Wednesday night, November 2nd, over 50 parents of Longfellow tennis juniors attended an inspiring and educational seminar presented by Longfellow, that featured David Benzel. David is an author, athlete, sport family coach, and professional speaker.

Parents left David's presentation having been challenged to take a look at how they parent, and he offered them specific techniques and helpful attitudes they might adopt that will support their children in winning the game of life, as well as the game of tennis.

There were many requests for a return engagement by David to enable him to share more of his knowledge to both parents and juniors. The tennis staff is now addressing how we can best utilize the considerable knowledge and skills of this strong proponent of supporting young people to experience success through their involvement in sports.  Keep an eye out for future announcements. To receive a free newsletter and see how you can continue to support your child, please check out David's website at www.growingchampionsforlife.com.

My Reasons for Walking

With last month being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I want to write about all our wonderful members at our club that are Breast Cancer Survivors and the great members we've lost.

Breast Cancer Ribbon
I have been blessed to have these women in my life who come to me for strength, courage & friendship. I am thankful for them letting me help them any way I can and to get through this horrible disease. I am truly inspired by each one and what they have to go through every day. With all that has gone on in my life, it makes me realize how lucky I am and that I should never complain because I have my health, my strength and I am alive. I thank God for that every day & to please give me strength to help all those who need my help who are not as lucky as me.

These women are so courageous & strong. They come to Longfellow to exercise but also for the support from all the other women. It is an honor to be at a club with such amazing women & be part of their support system. It's a family away from family, and I am so proud to be a part of it.

For my best friend Karen Severin, who didn't survive - she fought the most amazing fight & I was with her every step of the way. She reached her weight goal by playing my games; I taught her Basketball so she could play with her kids, she smiled & laughed at anything that came her way. She was so determined to beat cancer. Its been 9 years since she's been gone but it feels like yesterday. Her face shines down on me every day in Studio 1 and I know she is watching over all of us.

For another close friend, Trudy Pearlman, who just passed away on Oct. 1, my heart aches that you are gone. Trudy was a pillar of strength. Through every battle with cancer she had, she would come into the club just to see everyone to let us know she was OK. She battled for 10 years & to me it's not fair that one person had to deal with so much cancer. I held her hand before she died to tell her she fought the hardest fight, that I was so inspired by her strength and that I will never forget her and that Karen was waiting for her with open arms. I told her that she can work out in Heaven with Karen because they started their own club up there, and you don't have to worry about your weight. She smiled and said thank you for all you've done for me.

I get so attached, so close to those who have had Breast Cancer or any type of disease because I want so bad to cure it, to make them better. The worst feeling is being helpless and unable make it all go away.

I started a BREAST CANCER WALK 5 years ago, just a 5 mile walk, to walk for those we lost, for friends & families with Breast Cancer, to walk because we can...walk. Come join us, and help us find a cure for this terrible disease.

Thank you to all my wonderful friends at Longfellow with Breast Cancer...

This walk is for you.

In Memoriam

ted millsIn Memory of Ted E. Mills

December 3, 1938-October 4, 2011

Our Dear Longfellow Member

Ted and Donna Mills have been members for about 14 years...

They have been involved in the group exercise program for about 13 years...

Ted, tall & handsome and as sweet as could be...

Standing in the back row with Donna, their favorite place to be...

Barbell classes in the morning & some at night...

We'd help him out to make sure he got the exercises right...

Ted & Donna played EVERY ONE of our games that we put up on the board...

It always gave them something to work towards...

So motivated to finish, and they did everything together...

A loving couple who enjoyed just being together...

Outside of Longfellow, he worked at Raytheon for 51 years...

He sang in a church choir for over 25 years...

He was married to Donna for 46 years with a daughter and son...

Had 4 grandchildren who he always made time to have fun...

Ted was a caring & compassionate man who left a lasting impression on all...

His kindness towards others is what we will miss most of all...

His difficult battle with lung cancer took him away from us on Oct. 4...

Surrounded by his loving family, a man whom they adored...

May he rest in peace and go to his final resting place up in heaven...

And may he join our friends who are waiting for him up in heaven.
