Dear Members and friends, Our Longfellow community has been emotionally ravaged by this senseless act of violence with the loss of one of our children - Lauren Astley. Lauren's parents, Malcolm and Mary, are active members of Longfellow, and Lauren grew up at The Longfellow Club in Wayland. She began her tennis career by taking lessons from Sylvia Swartz, and in her teenage years she was coached by Phil Parrish. She grew into quite a tennis player, and she was elected captain of the Wayland High tennis team.
We know it takes a village to raise a child, and in the case of Lauren she was a beautiful and lively part of our village. Her father and mother have helped us all find ways to deal with this horrible pain with their grace and generous love. They have focused their energy on the life of Lauren and what lessons we might learn from the life and death of their daughter. How do we cope with this unimaginable pain? It might be to take this as another reminder of how fragile life. It might be to serve as a message about how beneficial and important it is to experience and express gratitude for people in our lives. It might be the recognition that our lives can change forever in a single moment.
At Lauren's memorial service, hundreds of folks participated in a deeply moving tribute in her honor. One of the messages of the service was that we can remember the gift of Lauren's life by spreading love and doing good deeds that make our community a stronger and more peaceful community.
We have been in touch with Malcolm and Mary, and we've shared some ideas on how the Longfellow community can honor Lauren's memory and raise money for her Memorial Fund. We'll be discussing the possibilities and we'll let you know what we decide - we're open to suggestions. Donations can be made to the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund, and sent to Village Bank, 62 Boston Post Rd, Wayland, Ma 01778.

Why did this happen...why did you have to go.
You were such a joy to work with and improved your tennis game...
Without you here, Longfellow will never be the same.
Though you were tiny, you were full of spunk with a heart so kind...
Tears run down my face as I see yours so clearly in my mind.
A tennis player with a beautiful voice and a heart that helped others...
The gifts you gave us Lauren...will be like no other.
You were way too young to be taken away...
Our hearts are breaking to have it end this way.
May you rest in peace and your soul be set free...
For you will be forever missed by CJ & me.

Bon Voyage, Whaleys and Cutlers - We'll Miss You!

On Thursday, July 14th, the Longfellow community said `so long' (we refuse to use the word goodbye) to Catherine & Phil Whaley and Joanne & Ken Cutler by hosting a pot luck luncheon and party. After some informal chatting and whining about losing our good friends to California and Florida, Longfellow president Laury Hammel called everyone together to share their own testimonials to these two extraordinary couples.
The comments made by their friends were touching and inspiring. They focused on how friendly, kind, and inspiring these folks are, and how important they are to our community. These comments emphasized their smiles and positive attitudes, as well as:

Ken was the very first fitness member at Longfellow in 1984, a true pioneer - Joanne engages everyone she comes in contact with, and is a wonderfully sweet person and Longfellow ambassador
- Catherine is an inspiration in her dedication to her health and her considerable flexibility
- Phil has used every square inch of Longfellow as he never found an activity at Longfellow he didn't like. He has introduced more than his share of new members to all that Longfellow has to offer

One of the most touching moments came when Sharon Kenny (Group Ex Instructor for over twenty years at Longfellow) and Stephanie Howard-Delman (member for over ten years) read the poems that Teresa Newton-Moineau wrote for these two couples. Click here to read the poems.
The party concluded with comments from our four departing friends. They shared that Longfellow has been life-changing for them and they hope to find a community that comes close to the warmth and fun of Longfellow.
As a way of working to heal the wounds of losing our friends to the South, one member suggested that these four will be back because they will never find another Longfellow. Selfishly, we can hope that that proves to be true.

Bill Stason

Bill Stason and his wife Sue have been fixtures at Longfellow for over 20 years. They originally joined to bring their tennis game together under one bubble. To them, Longfellow had easy access to singles, mens doubles & mixed singles tennis which was the main attraction for them.
This all changed though when Bill learned first hand about the value of regular exercise. He would tell his patients to eat healthy and exercise, and realized he needed to practice what he preached.

I met Bill 15 years ago, and we hit it right off. He was introduced to Cardio machines, Keiser machines, Powerpacing classes, Barbell, Core & Boot camp classes and then I taught him to stretch. All of this changed his life in so many ways and he became healthier and happier! Soon after, he added Yoga at 6:30am on Fridays with Natalie which has become his mental health therapist. He also incorporated Pilates as well as biking & hiking outdoors.
He learned how important it is to cross train to help prevent injuries, for even though Bill won't tell me his age....I know he's in his 70's! He is in amazing shape and is so appreciative of all the inspiring group exercise teachers along with the top management of Laury and Myke. He is so grateful to Longfellow for making such an impact on his life.
Bill LOVES Longfellow with its encouraging and family atmosphere, along with the early morning classes and the absolute terrific and diverse group of Longfellow members! I admire & am inspired by Bill and only hope one day I will be doing all he is doing when I reach his age. I am so thankful that I met him 15 years ago, and blessed for all the compassion & caring he has given to me and those around me. Bill is a GREAT member any club would be lucky to have!!!

Hammel Tennis Camp is ongoing this summer at The Longfellow Club and Natick Racquet Club. It offers half day and full day programs for children ages 4-18. Longfellow sponsors 11 USTA Summer League Teams. All the teams are over halfway through the season, and several are in the hunt for a league title and an invite to the regional tournaments beginning in late July and early August. Our specials THANKS to the over 200 players who represent Longfellow in these leagues. They have played hard and had fun, while competing against other worthy opponents!

 June 5th - Ali Hickey won the Girls 12's Level 6 at Kingsbury
- Michael Fedorouk was the finalist of the Boys 18's Level 6 at Sportsmans Club
- Michael Pioso made the semi-finals of the Boys 14 Level 7 at Nashua Swim and Tennis
- Austin Bendetson won the Boys 18's Level 7 at Nashua Swim and Tennis
June 12 - Ben Maffa won the Boys 12 Level 6 at Nashua Swim and Tennis
- Ethan Chen made the semi-finals of the Boys 14 Level 6 singles at Northeast Tennis center and won the doubles at the same tournament
- Cameron Ferguson won the Boys Level 6 at Bass River. Ferguson teamed with fellow Longfellow player Ezra Frankel and made the finals of the Doubles at the same tournament.

- Andrew Wang defeated Ethan Hecker, another Longfellow junior, to win the Boys 16 Level 7 at All Seasons

- Joey Haig made the finals, while Andrew Wang and Justin Haugland both made the semi-finals in the Boys 16 singles at the Longfellow Mid-week Level 7
- Josh Suneby won the Boys 18 singles at the Longfellow Mid-week Level 7
- Amaya Lopez Clay defeated Sabrina Woll in the final of the Girls 14 singles at the Longfellow Mid-week level 7, while Ali Hickey made the semis of the same tounament.

Aquatics News

Summer at the pool has gotten off to a great start! We have lots of kids enjoying swim team and lessons, but there's still room to join either our very popular swim team (we will pro-rate the cost) or a week of summer fun swim lessons. They run Monday - Thursday from 11:10-11:40, and are a great way to have fun while improving your swimming.
Although we are all enjoying summer, it is time to start thinking about the fall. We have all our terrific WSI certified instructors returning for the fall and winter sessions. Brochures and sign ups will be available shortly, but feel free to call now if you have any questions.
Whether you are taking part in any of our programs or just coming to spend a nice summer day with the family, we hope to see you at the POOL! Be sure to check out the current lap lane schedule and hours!

Exercising in the Heat

Summer is the perfect time to go outside and have fun. There are so many outdoor activities to choose from. Everything is more fun outside, whether you're swimming, running or cycling.
But the summer heat can be a problem if you're not careful, particularly in areas with extreme heat and humidity.
The biggest problems are staying hydrated and maintaining your body's electrolytes and salt. When you sweat, your body loses not only water, but electrolytes and salt, too. This delicate balance of water and electrolytes is crucial to keep your body functioning properly. You may not be running through the desert, but there are some things to keep in mind when it comes to exercising in the heat:
- If you don't drink enough water, you can get dehydrated and suffer from light-headedness and nausea. If not recognized, dehydration can even result in kidney failure and or, in extreme cases, death. However, if you drink too much water without replenishing your electrolytes, you can experience hyponatremia. This can lead to confusion, nausea, muscle cramps, seizures or even death in extreme cases.
- The time of day is important. Unless you are training for an event that takes place in the daytime heat, avoid exercising from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's the hottest part of day. Generally, the early morning is the best time to workout, especially if it's going to be a scorcher that day.
- Wear loose, light-colored clothes. The lighter color will help reflect heat, and cotton material will help the evaporation of sweat. You may also want to try specially designed, "hi-tech" running shirts and shorts. They are often made from material meant to keep you cool.
- Sunscreen is a must. Use SPF 45 just to be safe. It's important to protect your skin. You can get burned and suffer sun damage to your skin even on cloudy days.
- Stay hydrated. Before you go out, drink a glass or two of water. Carry a bottle of water or even a hydration pack such as the CamelBak. Take a drink every 15 minutes, even when you're not thirsty. When you're done with your workout, have a few more glasses of water.
- Replenish your electrolyte and salt intake while exercising. If you can, choose shaded trails or pathways that keep you out of the sun.
- Check the weather forecast before you start your workout. If there's a heat advisory, meaning high ozone and air pollution, you might want to take your workout indoors. These pollutants can damage your lungs.
Most importantly, listen to your body. Stop immediately if you're feeling dizzy, faint or nauseous.

Summer camp is underway, and we are having a wild time! Shown here is teacher Josh Schram with a baby alligator and Animal Adventures program leader Jared. Our campers learned about pythons, king snakes, chinchillas, ferrets, red-eared pond sliders (turtles), geckos and kinkajus (relatives of the raccoon). They were able to touch each animal and hear about their natural habitats. Every day at camp is filled with fun activities like this, and we still have openings available through the 26th of August. Call us for more information at 508-358-0710. Even though the summer has just begun, we are gearing up for fall with lots of great activities for all ages. Our flexible daycare and preschool programs for ages 3 months to 6 years and our after school program are all accepting applications for September. Water Exercise News

Summer in our spectacular outdoor pool is PRIME TIME for Water Exercise. We had full classes in Natick and Wayland on July 4. Special thanks to all participants at both clubs for getting up early for class & enjoying the holiday spirit. They well earned their good mood and increased daily energy that comes with a great water exercise class!
Water Cha-Cha was an added bonus in Wayland. It was a lot of fun and a great stretch for the hips. For those who missed those classes or have never taken one, join us and bring a friend. Our schedules are on the web site or in literature racks at each club. Check out both clubs' schedules for times that work best for you. Water Exercise is FUN and EFFECTIVE - don't miss out!!!

Nutrition

Summer is the time for getting outside more. Consider taking a family bike ride or a walk to a local ice-cream parlor. Knowing in advance that you are going out for a treat later that day can help you enjoy eating healthy foods all day long, while avoiding EVERY other temptation for junk food. Think ahead so you can succeed in your choices wherever you go. Decide if you "need" a small ice cream/frozen yogurt or can feel satisfied with something less indulgent. Think through how your choices will make you feel when you are done. Most likely, no matter what size ice cream you order, there is going to be that critical moment when the ice cream is done and you want just a little more. So why not order a sensible size and feel good while you are eating it and after you are done? ENJOY!

Shelia Weinstock Continues Her Winning Streak!

In our May newsletter we reported on the recent successes of our Natick Racquet Club Manager, Sheila Weinstock, on the national senior women's tennis circuit and we gave her a big cheer encouraging her to "Go for the Gold". Well, she did exactly that! On Thursday, July 21, 2011 Sheila and her partner, Jane Pang, ousted Lurline Fujii and Belmar Gunderson in the finals 6-4,6-3 and won the USTA National Grass Court Doubles Championships held in Forest Hills, New York. Sheila won her first coveted Gold Ball and she came close to the elusive Double Gold when she reached the finals of singles but lost a grueling battle to Fujii on a scorching hot and humid day in New York. The day before, Sheila played a 3 ½ hour match in the same heat and eked out a win over Grace Woo 7-6, 2-6, 6-3. Sheila burned more than a few calories in this tournament.
Further congratulations to Sheila are in order because her stellar results in 2011 national tournaments earned her not only a coveted position on the United States Althea Gibson Cub Team that competes in the International Tennis Federation World Team Championships in Turkey but she was named the Captain! Wow, way to go Sheila! On a side note, in the same tournament, Lexington resident Molly Hahn also won a gold ball in doubles and a silver in singles but in the Women's 60's division. Local tennis historians believe this is the first time two New England women have achieved this level of success in national competition. It's also interesting to note that Molly is Laury Hammel's life-long friend and former workout partner as a junior growing up in Salt Lake City. Molly and Sheila are raising the bar of expectations for Laury who currently only owns one national silver ball. We say to Laury too - Go for the Gold!

Positive Spin for ALS Bike Ride
re-scheduled for Sunday, September 18th!

As many of you know, the annual Positive Spin for ALS Bike Ride scheduled for June 12 was postponed due to an unfavorable weather forecast. The new date has been set for Sunday, Sept. 18! Over the years the ride has raised over $700,000 for research and patient care for those afflicted with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). You can choose a 10, 25, 50, or 70 mile ride, all starting and ending at Longfellow with a cookout. The ride is in memory of Pete Farricker, Myke's brother, who passed away from ALS in 2001 at the age of 45. The picture to the left shows members of the 1982 Ultimate Frisbee World Championship Team that Pete was a member of, that rides each year in Pete's memory. So come join us at Longfellow on Sunday, September 18th - get some exercise riding through the beautiful backroads foliage of MetroWest, have some fun, and contribute to others less fortunate than ourselves. Longfellow's Legendary Birthday Parties

Need a fun, active and engaging place to have your child's next birthday party? At the Longfellow Children's Center and The Longfellow Club we provide just that with many different options to choose from. Our talented, enthusiastic staff will do all the work and we provide all the components of a fabulous party, leaving you free to sit back and enjoy the fun (and take pictures, of course!)
At The Children's Center, we utilize our huge indoor playground with the "Amazing Maze" and treehouse structure for lots of active fun. Our Party Coordinators know lots of age-appropriate awesome games, and our staff does all of the set-up, clean-up and everything in between, including pizza, drinks, decorated paper goods and party favors.
At The Longfellow Club, kids can choose to swim in our heated, year-round pool and play games on the basketball floor. Parents may also combine the pool with the maze at the Children's Center for the best party ever. Consider us for your next party.
