Free Reformer Classes at Lumina during February!
Pilates can be a valuable addition to anyone's regular workouts. Did you know that we have a beautiful Pilates studio at Lumina? The Studio houses large equipment which is useful in working the total body, core and extremities. This equipment is best used to compliment regular mat exercise, or for those people who are working toward attending a mat exercise class.
In the studio, the equipment includes: a Cadillac, Stability Chair, Ladder Barrel and five Reformers. This large equipment was originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s to use while working to develop the core and strengthen the human mind and body. Most of the equipment uses springs for resistance training. As you use the equipment, there is "progressive resistance," or increased resistance as the springs are stretched.
The most widely used piece of equipment is the Reformer. At Lumina, there are five reformers for use with a trainer. Through a series of exercises, students develop strength in the core, stability in the shoulder and pelvic areas, balance, coordination and increased mind-body awareness. Reformer exercises can be modified to accommodate a large range of students, from those rehabbing from injuries and operations, to athletes and people of all ages.
Many celebrities and athletes are incorporating Pilates into their regimen, including: Jennifer Aniston, Tiger Woods, Martina Navratilova, Kristi Yamaguchi, the Orlando Magic and the San Francisco 49ers. You can too!
This February, we are offering FREE half hour reformer classes to anyone interested in trying! Please call Lumina, 508-358-6022 and sign up for your time. You will start to notice a change in your body soon!

Study Finds Adolescent Girl Athletes at Risk for ACL Injuries
A study found that adolescent girl athletes are eight times more likely to injure the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of the knee than their male counterparts.
- Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center Published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, 9/7/2001.
The study gives two primary reasons for the susceptibility to ACL injuries amongst girls. First, adolescent girls tend to develop increased quadricep strength, while not concomitantly increasing hamstring strength. This muscular imbalance leads to undue stress of the ACL. Second, girls become skeletally mature earlier during puberty, and they tend to perform their sports activities in a more upright position that adds stress to the ACL.
Tips on how to prevent ACL injuries, include making girls aware of their upright position during activities like landing from a jump and training them to assume a more flexed stance. Also to strengthen hamstring, hip, and core musculature.
More than 350,000 ACL injuries occur each year in the United States. Research shows that female athletes are up to 8 times more likely to have an injury than male athletes.
"ACL injuries in girls occur more in cutting and pivoting sports, such as basketball, soccer, skiing and volleyball, due to jump-land action." Dr.Charles Peterson II, Team Physician for Mercer Island High School Sports.
About 70% of ACL injuries occur from non-contact injuries. Studies have shown that ACL injuries could be reduced by up to 88% with proper training. Strength training is the best way to prepare for the sporting season and prevent injury.
The fitness staff at Longfellow is available to help design the strength training program for injury prevention that is right for you or your children. Prevention is the best form of treatment, so don't wait until it's too late. Make sure your children are strong and prepared for their upcoming sports season! Please contact your friendly fitness department staff to set up an appointment for personal training. |

February is a great time to feel good
about managing sweet treats!
Valentine's Day brings chocolates and treats which tend to linger long after the holiday has past. The most common "dangerous" treats include a box of assorted chocolates and baked goods. The variety of tastes in assorted chocolates makes them more tempting to overeat, and baked goods are loaded with calories. For example, a box of 12 chocolates is 600-800 calories (about 60-80 each) and a 4 oz. brownie or cookie contains about 600 calories.
But don't despair! There are healthy ways to enjoy chocolate this month without regretting it later. For around 200 calories you can enjoy a 1.5 oz. chocolate bar OR an 8 oz. cup of hot chocolate made with skim milk OR chocolate dipped fruit. What could be more romantic than sharing chocolate dipped strawberries? Enjoy!!!
For more details and information, contact Jane Polley at JPolley@Longfellowsportsclub.com or leave a message at (508) 358-3067 ext. 322.

Sheila Weinstock Wins National Senior Women's Title! |
Natick Racquet Club manager, Sheila Weinstock, recently won her first ever national senior women's tournament in West Palm Beach,Florida. Sheila was on fire in her first tournament in 2011.
Consider these facts:
- Sheila won this tournament on outdoor clay, even though she'd been training on indoor hardcourts in New England.
- Seeded #8, she pulled upset after upset and reached the finals without losing a set and beat the 6th and the 2nd seeded players on the way
- She toughed out the finals and defeated the #1 seeded player from New Jersey in three sets for the first time ever. Previously she had lost to the tournament favorite without ever winning a set.
Sheila has been a consistent and successful competitor on the national senior women's tennis scene and has been ranked as high as #4 in the nation and #10 in the world for her age group; but this was the first time she has actually won a national tournament.
Congratulations, Sheila! We know you're on your way to a fantastic year!
