Dear Members and Friends,

Dear Longfellow Members and Friends,

I hope you're well on your way to accomplishing your 2011 New Year's goals!  For those of you who are keeping up with your plans-Woo Hoo!  For those of you who have fallen short for any reason, no problem, it's never too late to start over (especially in January). Remember today is the first day of the rest of our lives!

No matter where you are, remember that in most cases it takes around 21 days to develop a new habit.  When a behavior becomes a habit, your body and mind naturally gravitate to keeping the pattern going.  One of our members made a goal  for January to come to the club every day, and as of this writing she was at 19 in a row and it's becoming a positive habit for her!  One phrase that never grows stale is - Carpe Diem (Seize the Day)!

On a personal note my New Year's goal of strengthening the muscles around my knees is going fantastic.  Using the Keiser machines and the Step Mill have made a world of difference!  I've got a new spring in my step and it feels soooo good!

On a business note we recently got the December gas bills back for our two newly insulated tennis air structures and the news is fantastic - we had a savings of between 50-70%!   Our energy saving efforts are paying off and we couldn't be happier.  If you happen to be a tennis player you `know' how much warmer it is!

Onward and Upward!

Laury Hammel, President

Longfellow Welcomes Kay Finn as the new Stott Pilates Director at Lumina!

kay finnWe are thrilled to announce Kay Finn as the new Director of the Stott Pilates Program at Lumina. Kay has been teaching Pilates part time at Lumina since 2007.  She brings her tremendous energy and creativity to the program, as well as her expertise and experience in teaching Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates classes. If you are looking to strengthen your core, become more flexible, heal an injury, or just get in overall better shape, Kay is the person to see!

We also welcome Andrea Dimanno, a recent graduate of Framingham State. Andrea has been working the front desk at Lumina since last August, and has recently begun teaching Mat Pilates there. She will be assisting Kay with the Pilates program, as well as taking over as the Front Desk Manager.

We want to wish Alyssa Bouffard all the best, as she moves on from Lumina to another phase in her life. Thank you Alyssa for all that you have done for Longfellow and Lumina. Best of luck in your new adventures!

Pilates at Lumina

pilates wordPilates can be a valuable addition to anyone's regular workouts.  Did you know that we have a beautiful Pilates studio at Lumina?  The Studio houses large equipment which is useful in working the total body; core and extremities.  This equipment is best used to compliment regular mat exercise, or for those people who are working toward attending a mat exercise class.

In the studio, the equipment includes: a Cadillac, Stability Chair, Ladder Barrel and five Reformers.  This large equipment was originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s to use while working to develop the core and strengthen the human mind and body.  Most of the equipment uses springs for resistance training.  As you use the equipment, there is "progressive resistance," or increased resistance as the springs are stretched.

The most widely used piece of equipment is the Reformer.  At Lumina, there are five reformers for use with a trainer.  Through a series of exercises, students develop strength in the core, stability in the shoulder and pelvic areas, balance, coordination and increased mind-body awareness.  Reformer exercises can be modified to accommodate a large range of students; from those rehabbing from injuries and operations, to athletes and people of all ages.pilates reformer

Many celebrities and athletes are incorporating Pilates into their regimen, including: Jennifer Aniston, Tiger Woods, Martina Navratilova, Kristi Yamaguchi, the Orlando Magic and the San Francisco 49ers.  You can too!

This February, we are offering FREE half hour reformer classes to anyone interested in trying!  Please call Lumina, 508-358-6022 and sign up for your time.  You will start to notice a change in your body soon!

    Fitness

Joint mobility is a fairly new concept to North Americans. Most people mistakenly equate it with stretching and flexibility. There are certainly some elements of stretching involved in joint mobility drills, but those are in fact side effects of the movements.

Simply put, joint mobility is the active pursuit of joint health through movement. It is generally accepted that as we age, the cartilage in our joints degrades, as does our ability to move them in a full range of motion and with ease. In our society, arthritis and joint degeneration are simply accepted as the price we pay for aging. Of course many doctors know this is not necessarily the case, but nonetheless the majority of society is in the dark on the matter.

Age is not the enemy here. We often are! As we age, we tend to slow down for a variety of reasons. In today's world, with technology being what it is, we as a society are becoming more sedentary. Interestingly enough we are seeing joint related problems in much younger people these days. Normally the treatment of choice is painkillers, and patients are told to take it easy for a while. Problem is, that's the reason they are in pain! The result? They get worse!

Anatomically and physiologically here is what is going on: the joints in our body that allow movement are lined with cartilage. This waxy looking substance protects the joints and allows for shock absorption during activity. In contrast to all other cellular structures in the body, it does not have its own blood supply. Instead, the body secretes a substance called Synovial Fluid, which carries oxygen and nutrients to the cartilage, and lubricates the joints. These joints are called Synovial Joints. Though as we get older, our joints can collect all sorts of toxins and excess material. This can lead to degenerative joint disease and joint infections. The way to avoid these problems is to have healthy joints.

If you are interested in learning more about joint mobility, please see one of the personal trainers in the fitness room.

Longfellow Boys Start the New Year on a Roll!

BallRacquetLongfellow continues its dominance in New England boys tennis competition.  In January, Longfellow juniors won several important tournaments.  The most significant victories were nailed down by Al Steinroeder in the Boy's 18's and Elliot Rozovsky in the Boy's 12's.  Al won the Winter Level Four Boy's 18's Championships held at Longfellow, and he played exceptional tennis losing only one set on his way to winning this challenging tournament and solidifying his #1 New England ranking.  Eliot won the Winter Level Four Boy's 12's Championships without losing a set and won the semi-finals and finals handily.

There are so many Longfellow juniors who deserve recognition.  However, space limits us to congratulating the following juniors who are ranked in the top ten in New England:

Get Your feet wet this winter, and develop a lasting, healthy habit!!

Since 1991, the participants in the Water Exercise Program have enjoyed socializing, sharing exercise, healthy habits and lots of fun. We are always impressed by our participants' commitment to consistency. Most of the people who were in that first class in 1991 (in Wayland) and 1994 (in Natick) are still coming to the club and enjoying classes several times a week. All current participants are encouraged to give yourselves credit for loyalty and lasting participation.  For our regulars, those who have drifted away from taking classes, and anyone interested in trying a class, now is the time to renew your commitment to consistency in the pool. It's almost a guarantee for increased mobility, greater energy, and better moods, and you will feel SO much better for the rest of the day. Bring a friend and join us early or late morning, evenings, and weekends. Beat the winter blues in the pool!!!!

    littlefoot logo

The Longfellow Club in Wayland recently signed a contract with LittleFoot Energy, Inc. of Somerville, MA to redesign and replace 65% of the HVAC units and install a state-of-the-art energy management system. LittleFoot is the company that installed the solar hot water system on the roof of Longfellow.  This half-million dollar project will dramatically reduce the energy use and carbon footprint of Longfellow, and will save a minimum of $85,000 per year in energy costs.

Longfellow Junior Aaron Revsin - a special player and person!

    aaron revsin

Aaron Revzin (center), with doubles partner

Austin Siegel (left) and coach Jeff Bearup.

Aaron Revzin recently won a bronze ball by placing third in the USTA National Boys 16's Doubles Championships which was held in Phoenix, Arizona, the week of December 26. There were 128 contestants in the tournament. Aaron also won the Sportsmanship Award for the tournament. Aaron has been a student in our New England Academy of Tennis for the past six years, and is coached by Jeff Bearup, Director of the Academy. Prior to that, he was a student in our junior development program.

Aaron is a junior at Needham High School, captain of his school's tennis team, and is one of several academy students who have won gold, silver and bronze balls in national tournaments. Congratulations to Aaron - this is quite an accomplishment and we wish him many more successes in the future.

The following article was published on the USTA website, and is a well deserved tribute to Aaron for his on court and off court actions.

    "Revzin Lauded On, Off Court

NEEDHAM, MA - When junior standout Aaron Revzin was named the winner of the sportsmanship award at the USTA 16s Winter National Championships in December, the junior star was honored to be selected among all the talented national players.

"As far as sportsmanship goes, it's something that I have been taught from an early age by my parents and something that's engrained in all the kids who train at (New England Academy of Tennis)," said Revzin, who has trained at the Natick-based facility under the tutelage of coach Jeff Bearup since he was 11 years old. "It's nice be to recognized for sportsmanship, but to me, that's all part of being a tennis player."

Although Revzin's demeanor has earned him the respect of coaches and peers alike, there is much more to his game. In Revzin's case, nice guys don't finish last - far from it, in fact, as his impressive on-court resume reveals.

In addition to winning the sportsmanship award at the Winter Nationals, Revzin also took home a bronze ball for the second time, finishing third in doubles with partner Austin Siegel. Revzin won his first bronze ball in 2008 with his long time doubles partner and close friend, blue-chip prospect Nolan Paige.Click here to read more...
