Moving
Our biggest change in 2013 will be to move to a new facility in March after being 2 miles from campus the last 10 years. The biggest improvement will be our connectivity to the campus. We will be back on the university's broad band network so file transfers will be very easy for us. This move will also put us within 2 blocks of our largest on campus customer. We will also be closer to the center of town and other government offices that we've talked to about insourcing.

We have two equipment purchases planned in 2013: a digital envelope printer and a digital press. We're currently looking at reconditioned machines. The price point allows us to get into the larger more expandable machines that will allow us to grow.

We made a wide variety of changes more than a year ago when we moved into a new area five times the size and the IT printers merged with us. The space was totally renovated for our use with many unique features not visible to the naked eye such as special anti-static flooring and an air exchange system that filters out bad air. The only changes planned in 2013 are to upgrade our CD/DVD printer/duplicator and implement the WebCRD (web to print) solution.

At the University of St Thomas in St Paul, MN, we are looking at  upgrading our online ordering system with a more user-friendly system that takes advantage of our active directory.

We are also going to change the layout of our shop floor to reduce the distance between our large format output devices and the large format finishing devices. Carrying a large print or banner 50 feet to a work table has caused some spoilage that can be prevented or reduced with a change in shop floor layout. New network jacks have been installed, we just need to find some time to shut everything down and carefully move the printers and the worktable to their new locations.

Because of the thermography, the State of Tennessee has always outsourced the production of business cards. We have received approval from the Governor's office to move toward a digitally printed business card for state employees. Current plans are that we will begin in-house production March 1, 2013. It should net us an additional $100,000 per year in revenue, but will require some significant workflow changes and the purchase of software and a business cards slitter.

We are in fiscal year 2012-13 right now so the improvements slated for 2013 were implemented in August. I upgraded ten production copiers in the copy centers throughout the district to Konica Minolta Bizhub Pro 951 models. The efficiencies that we experienced this year are: 10 more copies per minute, doubled DPI product quality, improved finishing features and much lower overall operating costs, making our chargeback rate for a single black-and-white image 1.6 cents. This covers fully loaded expenses including paper, labor, benefits, delivery, depreciation, utilities, lease payment, etc.
