Industry's Best Friend Offers Valuable Advice as He Prepares for Retirement
Most managers look to Jimmy Friend as a role model and for good reason! He has painstakingly grown and groomed the in-plant at the University of North Texas in Denton from a floundering shop on the verge of extinction to one of the most applauded printing operations in the country. This year the 40-person print team won for the third consecutive year the In-Print competition's Best of Show in the digital category. After an impressive printing career spanning 43 years, Jimmy will step down as Director of Printing & Distribution Solutions in December to pursue a new chapter in his life. But when he accepted the position in 1995, the future looked bleak. If they could not improve their financial performance, customer service and quality by the end of the fiscal year, the school's administration would investigate outsourcing the operation. Their last hope rested in a turnaround plan created by Jimmy. Read about Turnaround Plan... To send retirement wishes, email Jimmy.Friend@unt.edu |

Graph Expo Increases Emphasis on In-Plants
This year Graph Expo placed an increased emphasis on the in-plant
community. "It isn't widely known, but some studies have found the number of in-plants is greater than the number of commercial printing establishments," said Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC) President Ralph Nappi.
A comprehensive educational program was crafted to address the top in-plant priorities. At a packed luncheon presentation, "Connecting Customers with Print," sponsore d by IPMA and In-Plant Graphics, attendees heard from top suppliers and in-plant managers. Moderator Barb Pellow, Group Director of InfoTrends launched the session with a nuts and bolts explanation of new tools available. Special segments geared specifically for in-plants were hosted by Kodak, MacroPRO DM, Rochester Software Associates and Xerox.
A newly created pavilion, "The In-Plant Place," sponsored by IPMA, enjoyed a steady flow of in-plant printers, eager to share information. IPMA also offered certification testing for Graphic Communication Managers (CGCM) and Mail Managers (CMM) for the first time on-site. If you enjoyed Graph Expo, don't miss the in-plant event of the year -- IPMA 2013! |
