Kickoff & Founder's Reception Information

As most of you are well aware, the 2016 season Kickoff is Saturday, Jan. 9, which is only 16 days away. The Kickoff broadcast will go live at 10 a.m.

The broadcast of the Founder's Reception event at Dean Kamen's home will start on Friday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. Highlights will include interviews with veteran and rookie mentors and an interview with FIRST Robotics Competition Director Frank Merrick, where he will reveal new details about the upcoming 2016 Season.

Links to both broadcasts, as well as information about the events, will be accessible through the kickoff page.

"Last Chance to Ask an Expert" Event Updates

The Last Chance to Ask an Expert seminar is happening again this year on Friday, Jan. 8 from 1-4 p.m. at FIRST HQ (200 Bedford St., Manchester, NH 03101)! So far, our panelists include:
  • Dana Henry, FIRST Senior Mentor
  • Andy Baker, AndyMark President & Owner
  • Jamee Luce, FRC Team Advocate
  • Michelle Long, FIRST Alumni and Scholarships Programs Manager
  • Lauren Jefferson, FIRST VISTA
Feel free to stop by at any point during the event to ask questions! If you have any questions beforehand, email Dana at dhenry@firstinspires.org.

Apple Technology Camp Nominations

FIRST has been offered the opportunity to nominate current high school sophomores and juniors for the 2016 Apple Engineering Technology Camp! The camp will run from Monday, July 11 to Friday, Aug. 5 in California. Apple will admit 24 students to the program and all travel/accommodation expenses will be paid for all camp attendees.

Please note that your application to FIRST doesn't guarantee admittance, nor does FIRST's nomination of any student; ultimately Apple will make the final call on all camp attendees.

Nominations are open until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 4. The application and full details for this opportunity are on the FIRST Alumni site.

FIRST Robotics Competition & Core Values

Frank Merrick asked the Woodie Flowers Award recipients if they would like to write statement about FIRST being 'more than the rules' to share with the community. See what they came back with here. This will be incorporated into Section 1 of our 2016 Game Manual, as well. Please consider the thoughts of our Woodie Flowers Award recipients as we gear up for another great season!

Team Standards Update

As was mentioned in an earlier blog, for the first time ever, this season teams will be able to create a special flag, or 'standard', to fly on the field during matches. Due to the number of questions received, FIRST has updated the team standard specifications for clarity to teams. The updated specifications can be found here. We look forward to seeing what all of you create!

Reminder: Apply for FIRST Scholarships!

Current high school students should take advantage of their winter breaks and take a look at the FIRST Scholarship page! There are around 200 scholarship providers and $25 million in available scholarships for students. Several scholarship deadlines are during either build or competition season, so it's advantageous for team members to apply before the season starts. A handful of scholarships are available high school juniors, as well.
