Communication Regarding Inpatient Services

The elimination of the 72 hour pass through has been in effect for about 6 weeks and providers have asked questions and for clarification of some items. Here are some points that may answer some of those questions:
  • Service Authorization Requests (SARs) should be submitted on the last day of the current authorized time-frame or on the first day service is rendered of the concurrent request. Continued stay SARs will not be reviewed retroactively.
  • Ask for authorization of days as needed. Do not include date of discharge on the request.

  • Since Partners has Utilization Management staff available seven days a week from 8 a.m.-12 a.m., requests for four days for admissions and/or concurrent authorizations that come in on Thursdays to cover through the weekend or a holiday will not be processed. However, providers may request a minimum of one day.  No more than three days can be requested on one SAR.
  • It is suggested if there is a request submitted that {ends} on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, the provider can submit the auth request to end on Friday or the day prior to the holiday. The provider could then submit a new request on Friday (or day prior to the holiday) with new {updated} clinical information requesting three days that could cover through the weekend (and holidays).
  • All requests are reviewed for medical necessity and could be approved, denied or partially approved.
