A monthly update from UCP Central PA

LifeFit: Meet Adaira
March is National Nutrition Month
Adaira is a fun-loving full of life consumer who participates in the LifeFit fitness and nutrition program. She started with the program as the very first consumer in Dauphin County in 2009. At the time she was a recent high school graduate, living with her family, and working at her local grocery store. Adaira's fitness goal was simple: "lose weight." She started a workout routine with LifeFit staff at a local gym. Others at the gym took notice of Adaira's hard work and she soon began to show confidence and pride in the work she was putting in each day.

Adaira also needed some guidance and education with regard to nutrition. She set small daily goals that
included drinking more water, cutting back on her nightly ice cream, and making healthier choices while at work. She also participated in nutrition lessons, became more selective with her grocery shopping, and prepared healthy meals with her LifeFit clinician. All of this hard work began to pay off and Adaira started losing the weight. She loved letting her clinician know she had to buy smaller pants! In total Adaira lost 20 pounds, not only did she feel better but it also helped her excel in many of the Special Olympic sports she participates in.

Adaira still is actively involved in the LifeFit program. Her clinician works on maintaining her healthy weight, and also sets very sports-specific goals depending on what event she is participating in through the Special Olympics. She lights up the gym when she walks in and many other gym-goers look forward to talking to her about some of her favorite things; her dogs, the Eagles, and Penn State football. She has made many friends through the LifeFit program and is often seen encouraging other consumers in the program. Not only did LifeFit provide a way to a healthier lifestyle, but it also gave Adaira the confidence to participate in many activities, and become a leader both in her job and in many social settings.
