 If you're like most people, you actively recycle aluminum soda cans at work, at home, or both. Sure it's a good thing to do for Mother Earth, but did you know that such a simple gesture can also bring life-changing dollars to individuals with special needs? Here at UCP Capital Area Children's Center, we "Save 'em for Sophia!"
The funds raised as a result of this recycling effort support the Sophia Butler Therapy Camp Account. The money enables the family to get Sophia much-needed equipment and therapies that are not covered by insurance. If you would be interested in supporting this cause, you can make arrangements to drop off your empty cans at the Capital Area Children's Center in Camp Hill. Contact Lisa Butler at 717-975-0611, x247, or email lbutler@ucpcentralpa.org. Or, if you have someone in your life who could benefit from a similar arrangement, contact Lisa to learn more.

 What do you think of the concept of recycling something that not only makes everyday living easier for the user... it makes otherwise impossible tasks possible? That is both the mission and the purpose of Changing Hands, an assistive technology equipment reuse and recycling program of UCP. If you have an AT device (or durable medical equipment) that has served your purpose but still has a lot of life left in it... won't you consider donating it to Changing Hands?
All the equipment we receive is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and is provided free of charge to Pennsylvania residents who have a need, but do not have the financial means or a funding source to obtain the equipment or device in question.
"Changing Hands brings technology, from the simplest to the most sophisticated, to people who often need it most... but can least afford it," explains UCP AT Specialist Jackie Wardle. "It's a simple process but one that has the potential to have a real impact on the life of someone with a disability." According to Jackie, it is often equally satisfying for the people donating the equipment as it is for those receiving it. "Sometimes a family member brings in items at a very sad time of their lives--a loved one has passed away or is ill. Giving another person in need a device that will make their life better or easier can be a great comfort at such a time."
How's that for making the world a better place for all of us to inhabit?

In today's society, an important element of living life without limits is the ability to be a part of, and communicate with, the online community. Your donation of used computer equipment can help someone with a disability do just that.
Our goal with this recycling program is twofold:
* To give consumers with disabilities who are unable to purchase computers on their own access to equipment that can make them more independent in their everyday lives. * To continually refresh technology throughout UCP programs, classrooms, and training centers
Our principal current needs are for the following items:
* PC desktop
* PC laptop
* Digital cameras
You can make a tax-deductible donation in a few easy steps. Simply: - Visit the technology donation page of the UCP website
- Complete your contact information
- Describe your donation
- Schedule a pickup/drop-off
You'll receive a Donation Acknowledgement Letter from the National Cristina Foundation, UCP's partner in this recycling effort. To learn more, contact: Karen Beaston, kbeaston@ucpcentralpa.org |
