FROM THE CHAIR
by Cheryl L. Niemeier, Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, Indianapolis, IN

This is my tenth chair column! Whew!

I love to write! Although, last July, when I became chair, the thought of finding twelve topics and writing twelve chair columns seemed daunting. Now just a mere ten months later, it's hard to believe that after this one, only two remain. Where did the time go and what did I write about?

Here's a brief, albeit, incomplete recap: the name change, our customers perceptions of us as "magicians", the continued seismic changes our profession is undergoing, libraries as knowledge cathedrals, a few columns about reminders and details of the work of our SIS, and an outline of my goals as chair of this great SIS. So what shall my final 2 columns be about? Hint: the twelfth and final one will explore how well I met my goals as chair of PLL and the eleventh one is yet to be determined. Suggestions welcome!

I hope you have enjoyed my columns and found them helpful. I certainly had fun writing them and learned many things along the way. If you wish to reread past issues of the PLL newsletters the archive for them is found on the PLL website.

In honor of National Library Week which was in April, 11 Reasons Librarians Are Better Superheroes Than The Avengers lists the many reasons librarians are superior to superheroes. Of course we already know that.

Seth Godin often poses though-provoking questions. In What if you stopped? he asks us to explore the concept of what would happen if we stopped doing what we do, but not in the usual sense of what would happen to us, rather what would happen to our customers. In the context of law libraries, the more pertinent questions might be would they miss the services we offer? Without us, would they be able to find the information they seek? If so, how long might it take them? All questions worth pondering. And if you're unsure of the answers, it may be time to ponder remedies to your doubts about whether or not you'd be missed if you stopped doing what you do.

Those who are not librarians oftentimes have misconceptions about what librarians do. 14 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About Librarians exposes a variety of mistaken beliefs about what we really do. It is our job to inform them, otherwise, we risk perpetuating the fallacies.
