PLL Summit Registration Open

When you register for the 2015 AALL Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA in July, be sure to also register for the PLL Summit using the same registration site.  You
must register by June 22 to attend the Summit.

FROM THE CHAIR
by Cheryl L. Niemeier, Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, Indianapolis, IN

Change is in the air!

Recognizing that change is not always easy, but knowing that it is oftentimes both good and necessary, I am pleased to announce the results of the final name change survey that was sent to members in January. Out of the 351 members completing the survey,  65% chose Private Law Librarians & Information Professionals (PLLIP-SIS). Thus, in late March the membership will be asked to vote to approve this as the new name for PLL.

In addtion, the March ballot will also include the election of our new PLL officers and I am pleased to announce our slate for the 2015-2016 term.

Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect

Marlene Gebauer, Director of Knowledge Solutions, Greenberg Traurig, LLP, Florham Park, NJ

Cameron Gowan, Library Services Manager, Jones Day, Washington, DC

Treasurer

Laurel Evans, Librarian, Lane Powell PC, Seattle, WA

Catherine Hardy, Library Services Manager, Hanson Bridgett LLP, San Francisco, CA

Member-At-Large

Ellyssa Kroski, Director of Information Technology, New York Law Institute, New York, NY

Elizabeth Whittington, Law Librarian K&L Gates LLP, Pittsburgh, PA

The biographies and statements of the candidates will be forthcoming and shared with all members ahead of the election.

In early May, a second ballot will ask members to vote on several proposed amendments to the PLL Bylaws. The amendments are necessary to bring our SIS Bylaws into conformity with the AALL Bylaws. Additionally, because a name change necessitates a Bylaws amendment, should the vote to change the name be affirmed on the March ballot, the new name will also be on the proposed Bylaws amendments ballot as a severable vote from the larger proposed conformity amendments.

Dates for upcoming PLL ballots:

  • 1st Ballot - Name Change and Election of Officers - voting opens on Monday, March 30 and closes on Monday, April 13
  • 2nd Ballot - Bylaws Amendments -  look for the proposed amendments on or about Tuesday, April 7 with voting opening on Monday, May 11 and closing Monday, May 25

The Blogosphere and Beyond

Data points (aka numbers) are great, but stories are better. Even better are the stories that you can tell that are informed by the data you collect. Law Libraries, Data, Value, and Story Telling offers compelling reasons to encourage storytelling to better illustrate and prove your value to your organization's stakeholders.

A recent ABA Law Technology Today article Running the Law Firm Library Like a Business promotes running our departments like a business. What are you doing to run your law library like a business?

How to Achieve Your Law Firm's ROI in Online Research Services tackles the tough issues of finding the best balance of resources that enable a law firm's attorneys to do the research needed for their clients while also keeping costs for the law firm library's resources down.

Kudos for reasons 1 through 4 in 5 Reasons the Corporate Workplace Needs Librarians for pointing out how librarians are a bargain because we are great at finding and organizing information, understanding information vendors, and not having departmental agendas, but raspberries to point 5 that characterizes us as cheap because "we don't require high status, fat bonuses or even thanks (much of the time) to stay motivated". We may not require those things, but perhaps we should, as the Answer Maven's take on this post in Information Professionals: High Value Investments for Corporate Workplaces  indicates. Or at minimum not refer to our professional selves as cheap.

2015 PLL Summit Innovation Showcase

Each year the PLL Summit provides a unique and invaluable opportunity for our members to network with colleagues from across the country.  The 2015 PLL Summit:  The Innovation Imperative will continue that great tradition, and a highlight of this year's summit will be the additional opportunity for members to learn from each other's success stories in the Innovation Showcase.

Showcase presenters will provide mini-presentations on innovations they've put in place within their organizations, sharing practical takeaways and new ideas to help attendees provide enhanced value in their own firms.   Selected Showcase presenters will receive FREE Summit registration.  Application form and additional details are available on the PLL Summit site.  The application deadline is March 2.  Have an idea, but not sure if you should apply?  Feel free to contact us to discuss your proposal.
