FROM THE CHAIR

by Linda-Jean Schneider, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, Philadelphia, PA

As I explore potential "Knowledge Management" projects at the firm, I find myself constantly repeating the mantra: Collaborate and Communicate. A recent blog post from CKO Patrick DiDomenico specifies: "KM is about getting the right information to the right people at the right time... It's about 'connecting people with people, connecting people with knowledge and information,..."

If that doesn't describe what I'm trying to do as your Chair, and what PLL is doing as an SIS, I don't know what does! I hope that these communications from me are getting to you at the right time, full of the information (reminders) you need, and enabling you to do your best.

Meanwhile, you have an awesome group of PLL-SIS leaders who have tackled programming, communicating, awarding, granting, nominating, promoting, revising bylaws and manuals, surveying members, and strategic planning throughout the past year. During a recent conference call with many of those leaders, we reviewed the masterful revision of the 'Leadership' (formerly 'Procedures') Manual, the eye-opening results of the Membership Survey, and the insightful and far-reaching objectives and actions of the 2012-2014 Strategic Plan, plus the status of the revised website and other communication channels. We are definitely collaborating and communicating to keep you connected and informed!

And we're listening to your ideas, suggestions, and reflections about the current state of our profession and the potential for the future. In the Membership Survey, almost half of the membership took time to comment on programming, the benefits and value of membership, and what we could try to do differently. Frequent and repeated endorsement of the PLL-SIS Summit permeated the responses, combined with ideas on programming and training, calls for better organized messages, and appreciation for the tremendous networking (collaboration again!) and professional development opportunities resulting from active participation in PLL. As the PLL-SIS Leaders take your responses to heart, you can be assured that you will not face the future challenges of our profession alone.

What's Going on at the Summit?

By Cheryl Niemeier, Director of Library Services, Bose McKinney & Evans LLP

The AALL PLL-SIS Summit, now in its fourth year, continues as a vehicle for examining the impact and opportunities presented by change. Last year, we looked at changes in the business and practice of law and envisioned what those changes mean for the future. This year, we explore how to take charge, shaping ourselves as well as the services we provide to meet the new world demands we face.

This year's Summit theme is SOS: Shaping our Success, and takes place Saturday, July 13, 2013 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers (Headquarters hotel) at 1400 6th Ave, Seattle, WA.

To kickoff the event, attendees are invited to the Friday evening June 12 receptionfrom 6:00 pm to 8:30 p.m. at The Palace Ballroom, 2100 5th Avenue, Seattle. The reception, generously sponsored by Bloomberg Law/Bloomberg BNA is sure to be a fun evening of excellent food, beverages, and networking. Please click here to RSVP no later than July 5th.

On Saturday morning, following registration and a continental breakfast, attendees will enjoy the Keynote Address generously sponsored by Thomson Reuters. Bruce MacEwen, our keynote speaker, more popularly known as Adam Smith, Esq. MacEwen, who grabbed the attention of law firm leaders in 2012 with his "Growth is Dead" series-recently published as a book-will inspire us with his nuggets of wisdom on "Shaping Our Success" in the ever-changing library landscapes in which we currently reside.

The morning inspiration continues with a discussion titled "Lean Up! Finding and Seizing Opportunities for Growth" lead by a distinguished panel of speakers including

William Scarborough, Chief Human Resources
Officer, Barnes & Thornburg LLP and Bob Oaks, Chief Library and Records Officer, Latham & Watkins and one additional speaker with whom we are still in talks.
Our distinguished panelists will fuel us with ideas to help us identify, adopt, and promote roles that add value to our organizations.

Following a full morning of exciting and inspiring talks, the networking lunch, kindly sponsored by Wolters Kluwer Law & Business will give you an opportunity to relax, network and enjoy insights into the legal market from the very special and no doubt humorous perspective of David Lat, our luncheon speaker, and Managing Editor of Above The Law.

In the afternoon, the excitement continues with interactive break-out sessions that will investigate the
practical aspects of social media, the art of branding, and the user experience. The sessions listed below will be repeated twice so that each participant can benefit from two out of the three afternoon programs.
  • Changing Perceptions: Selling Your Role as a Strategic Partner, Sally R. Phillips, Consultant, Legal & HR Strategies
  • Nailing Social Media: Steps to Growing Your Digital Presence, Jeffrey Brandt, Legal Technology and KM Consultant and Editor, PinHawk LLC
  • Increasing Relevance and Engaging Patrons with User Experience Design, Aaron Schmidt, Principal, Influx Library User Experience

The day will end with a brief, but important reporting and wrap-up of the key takeways from the day. In order to provide access to a wide audience, we have secured a venue that can accommodate up to 300 attendees. We encourage members to register early so they can be a part of this valuable one-day conference. The registration cost is $199 and you can register via the AALL Annual meeting registration form available here. Simply check the box for PLL-SIS Summit IV and remit your payment along with the registration form to AALL.
