DREW SCOTT RACING
September 2015

After crashing out of my last two races in Mexico, it was satisfying to finally return and get a bit of redemption this past weekend at Ironman 70.3 Cozumel. I ended up finishing 6th in a fairly tight race with just 3 minutes separating 3rd-7th place.

As most races tend to go, it was a bit up and down for me all day and after falling as far back as 10th at one point in the run, I was able to claw back in the last 10k to 6th. The atmosphere at the races I've done in Mexico is always awesome with huge support from the local community and Cozumel was no different this year. When you start to really feel rough out there on the run it's always nice having a few people yelling at you to get moving!

I'm back home in Boulder now and will try to recover as best I can the next few days before a quick turn-around to race Silverman 70.3 in a little over a week. It will be another good test and my first chance to defend my title from last year. As always, thanks for all the support and good luck to those with big races coming up!

Swim

I smashed myself the first few hundred meters to try to get on the right set of feet but ended up just off the back of the lead group of 4 for most of the swim coming out about 25 seconds back. I had a good transition though and headed out on the bike with Leon Griffin and Andrew Starykowicz.

Bike

I knew I had to try to stay with Starykowicz for as long as possible and this would be my ticket to a great race. After about 15 minutes we bridged up to Boecherer at the front and I immediately settled behind those two and waited patiently for the inevitable attacks. When they attacked about 30 minutes into the bike, I just didn't feel great and simply wasn't able to hold the pace when Starykowicz went to the front. I looked behind hopeful that someone else was willing to take up the chase but I don't think anyone else had the legs to go with him either, so I was now in a group of four with Griffin, Hadley and Zyemstev. Hadley, Griffin and I swapped turns over the next 15 miles or so before I went to the front to try to spread things out a bit and try to limit the damage Boecherer was doing up front. I was never able to get any real gaps and we ended up rolling into T2 with a large group of 10 guys. It's amazing to me how some guys are so content to just sit in the group for 56 miles at a very questionable 12 meters willing to just give the race to Boecherer and fight for 2nd. But I guess that's all part of racing! For those that are interested, a few numbers from the bike are below as well as a link to the Strava file. I use a Stages Power Meter.

Normalized power: 313w
Average power: 308w
Average cadence: 96rpm

Run

I went out hard on the run and after a quick first mile I frankly just felt awful and went backwards from 2nd to 10th over the next 3 miles. I could almost hear people that were cheering cringe when they saw me-I'm sure I looked terrible! Then for whatever reason my legs started to come around about 5 miles in and my energy was feeling better. I began running quite well and started to close again on the guys in front of me. I started slowly picking people off as others around me were beginning to fade on the 2nd lap of the run. I was finally able to catch Leon Griffin around mile 10 of the run moving into 6th and in the end fell about 35 seconds shy of 5th place. It was very encouraging that I was able to run well the last 10k but I definitely shot myself in the foot with my first 5k and rather than fighting for the podium at the end I was fighting to get a paycheck! It's really nice to see my run improving after a lot of consistent work the last 6 months and I'm looking forward to what will likely be another very tough, hot day at Silverman 70.3 next week.

Post Race

FINALLY got to take advantage of the all-inclusive resort we stayed in and enjoyed a big meal and a few Cervezas. I went out with a few friends to the post race after party at the one and only Senor Frogs. I'd never been to one before but it's quite the place! Even witnessed a marriage proposal (she said yes!).

Thanks again to all my sponsors for your support and continued belief in me: Boardman Bikes, HOKA ONE ONE, Shimano, PowerBar, Blueseventy, Ekoi, Stages Cycling, Kiwami, SaltStick and Alta Physical Therapy.
