Our distinguished guest speaker is Dr. Ken Phillips, Curator of Aerospace Science at the California Science Center located in Exposition Park. He will be speaking about the latest acquisition, Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Kenneth E. Phillips, Ph.D. has served as Curator for Aerospace Science since 1990 and

develops the California Science Center Foundation's programs and exhibits on aeronautics and space exploration. As Curator, he is responsible for creating the vision that shapes these programs and leading the team in the process that includes concept and storyboard development; multiple phases of design; prototype development and testing; artifact acquisition; audiovisual production; exhibit fabrication and research on visitor learning.

Dr. Phillips' major projects include Phase III of the Science Center's 25-year Master Plan featuring the Space Shuttle Endeavour and the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center; the SKETCH Foundation Air and Space Gallery; the Roy A. Anderson A-12 Blackbird Exhibit and Garden; and development of the Creative World permanent gallery(co-curator).

 `

Prior to joining the California Science Center Dr. Phillips was a member of the Engineering and Applied Sciences Department at the RAND Corporation where he served for 13 years both in Washington, D.C. and Santa Monica, California. At RAND he conducted research on environmental science, energy policy and the military applications of aerospace technology.

Dr. Phillips received his B.S. degree in Physics from the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, an M.S. in General Engineering from the University of Wisconsin and Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University in Environmental Engineering. He has served on the board of directors of several organizations involved in education and the arts including the national board of the United States Academic Decathlon; The Watts Towers Arts Center; Donna Sternberg and Dancers; and the Center for Advanced Learning charter school at the Bilal Islamic Center. Dr. Phillips served also as a volunteer classroom physics teacher for the Los Angeles Council of Black Professional Engineers Saturday EXCELL Academy and currently teaches the Living in Space course in the Hands-On Science Camp program at the Science Center.

President's Message

Dear Fellow Rotarians and friends:

Last Friday, it was such a pleasure and honor to be your President and represent our historic Club as we welcomed the amazing and beautiful young women of the Rose Queen and Her Court. If you missed this great meeting, you'll have another opportunity to see the Rose Queen and Court on their float in the Rose Parade during our official LA5 Rose Parade Party on New Years Day hosted by fellow LA5 Rotarian Noble Trenham at his home at the start of the parade route. My family will be returning early from our ranch in Texas so that we may attend the Rose parade for the very first time and support our own LA5 Rotarians Steve Cooley and JT Warring as they ride the Rotary International float alongside RI President Sakuji Tanaka. I hope to see you and your family at this wonderful New Year celebration!

Speaking of family, December is Rotary "Family Month" and I hope you are looking forward to celebrating the holidays with your family. This is my favorite time of year: Christmas trees and carols, holiday parties, good friends and family.

Our Club is proud to sponsor two signature holiday service events again this year. A $10,000 donation to the ABC7 "Spark of Love" toy drive and Stuff-A-Bus event will be presented this Friday to purchase 2,200 toys for needy children. And the "Angel City Giveaway" event this Saturday morning in South LA will distribute toys, blankets and food to less fortunate families who need our help to celebrate the holidays and Christmas.

This Friday, we will welcome the Curator of Aerospace Science at the California Science Center to introduce us to Endeavour. I hope you will also join me and my family on Sunday to meet him in person.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Jay Allen Richardson, GOTJ, CFA, CFP®

Club President 2012-2013

Rotary Club of Los Angeles
