Andrea

Andrea...
You cannot help but be struck by Andrea's smile.
Her zest for life is rather contagious.

Even with the rain!

Andrea had thought out her wedding decor down to the fine details. "Rustic but elegant - fun, whimsical - shabby chic - but not cute - not contrived".

She wanted to incorporate mason jars, twine, & burlap.

Andrea's flowers?  "Well-tossed-together" garden bouquets, with a touch of the meadow in coral colours with creams & ivory. Most of our brides have not thought it out to this extent - still we managed to offer up some ideas for fine tweaking!

It came together so nicely - Check here for the end result.

The bouquet...

About 3 weeks before Andrea's big day, we got together again, along with her Bridesmaids, for what we like to call our "Flower Party". This was a bit of a challenge as they were all working out of town at the time and live in the heart of Toronto (& in the middle of TIFF).

We met up at Banting House B & B with buckets of in-season-flowers in various shades of coral, orange, melon, peach & ivory (and a couple bottles of wine!) Creativity flowed!

A grand sized bouquet was planned for the bride and a nose-gay size for bridesmaids. Everyone had a try at wrapping the stems & French-braiding the garden twine.

We left the stems long for that just-picked-from-the-garden look, but kept the bouquet size like a nose-gay.

Where did the name "Nose gay" come from anyway?

In the Victorian era, two lovely ladies might stroll in a garden picking fragrant flowers along the way. They'd tie the flowers up with twine or ribbon - cut the stems short for easy handling - return home to the men-folk and keep the bouquet under their nose - to keep their nose gay!

(remember they did not have deodorant back then!)

wedding flowers

Check it out !!!

We managed to score some Ranuncula at the last minute - forced into bloom - from a grower's

 greenhouse! Surprise!

And look how splendidly it all came together - the twine, the mason jars, the colour!

Children at weddings...

Some considerations:

What is the age of your Flower girl and Ringbearer at the time of the wedding?

How tall are they?

Personality - Shy? Outgoing? Class clown? Fuss-budgit?

    flower girl and ringbearer

Giving children a role at a wedding is endearing, however be sure it suits their age, size & personality.

here comes the bride

These considerations will help you determine the size of the florals & the level of responsibility.

A shy child usually likes to clutch something - helps calm nerves - like a small bouquet. A class clown might start to swing a basket or bucket of flowers round and round. Some can follow instructions about holding a sign or tossing petals while others cannot. A rose ball is so pretty but may be too heavy for a 3 year old to carry - etc etc etc.

children at weddingsLoving the burlap, twine & linen theme carried throughout Andrea's wedding. Keeping a theme flowing throughout a wedding is much better than "matchy matchy". We like to call this "echo-ing"  - good job Andrea!

Groom

Guys at weddings...

Terrance follows the trend of a multi-flower boutonnire combined with herbs, seeded eucalypltus & lavender -  hand-tied and French-braided with garden twine - a nice echo to Andrea's bouquet.

   table decorAndrea's table dcor..

All summer we had fun collecting old mason jars. And here is a tip. Remove the glass portion of the lid, and replace the metal ring on the jar to give that rustic look.

Carrying on with Andrea's theme of just picked garden & meadow flowers, we left the centrepieces looking a little less organized and included the buds of the flowers.

Sometimes it is best to select cultivated versions of wild flowers as they tend to last longer without wilting. We can guide you through this selection. Here we have added lysianthus, veronica (that's the white spike flower) and wax flower to the other flowers which are repeated from the bouquets.

Placement...

Mason jars look terrific when varying sizes & heights are placed together as a grouping. This works especially well for a round table as there is plenty of real-estate in the centre of the table. Some rectangular tables are narrow and best suit single jars placed in odd numbers randomly down the centre of the table - maybe 3 or 5.

By now you may be thinking that Andrea looks familiar...

With good reason! She is a celebrated Canadian actress - see here what was recently written about Andrea:

Canadian born stunner Andrea Drepaul's acting chops can be viewed on film and television in over 80 different countries all over the world. Having done guest star spots on US-based TV series, Covert Affairs and The Firm, Drepaul can also be seen in the recently released film, The Boy who Smells like Fish, starring Douglas Patterson from Big Love which opened on Valentine's Day in the US."
