First Grade "Electric Hearts" Put on a Show
The Electric Hearts Dance to The Electric Slide
"You have to let in all the emotions!" exclaimed one of the actors in this week's first grade play. "Even the dark emotions have a purpose!"

The play, entitled Welcome to the Guesthouse, explores feelings and emotions--and how those connect to the heart. Two proprietors of The Guesthouse (the heart), named Vena and Cava, receive a whole slough of different visitors. Emotions like Happy, Unique, Peaceful, and Trust have to find a way to co-exist in the house with others such as Cranky, Sad, Angry, and Fear. Check out the video for their spin on the Electric Slide!
Seniors Complete Service Projects
As demonstrated throughout each school year, service is a crucial part of OES's identity. But did you also know that it's a graduation requirement? In order for seniors to receive their diplomas, they must perform 80 hours of service--plus two long-term service projects--and then craft a capstone reflection on the experience.

Over the course of their Upper School careers, our eldest Aardvark students have given back to local, regional, national, and even international organizations in a multitude of ways. As just one example, Cameron S. '16 (pictured above) recently worked with Montclair Elementary P.E. students for a week to teach them the basics of track and field.
Lower School Classes Connect--in Spanish!
Recently many of our Lower School students connected with children of migrant families through the Woodburn Family Learning Center. These Spanish service learning field trips, lead by Kelola McCrary, involved all OES fourth and fifth grade classes visiting the Center to share their love of learning.

Using stories, songs, videos, and even a water bottle puppet named Seor Agua, the fourth graders talked with children at the Center about the value of water in our lives. The fifth graders worked with the Center children to talk about community--and Ms. Akehurst's class set up a Feria del Libro (reading fair) so that each child could take home at least one book!
Middle School Voices "Echo" Through Campus
Chapel looked and sounded a little different for our Middle Schoolers last week as the winners of the Echoes writing contest were honored.
The chapel began with a performance from the 6th grade band: Selkie (A Scottish Legend) by Johnnie Vinson.
Middle School faculty members and Echoes team leaders then each read one sentence of every piece of work submitted for consideration in the contest.
Our winners are: Ava C. '20 for Fiction, Annie W. '21 for Nonfiction, and Ella S. '22 for Poetry. (Annie was either a winner or a runner-up in all three categories.) Congratulations to all winners and runners-up, pictured here with their best serious writer faces!
