COMING UP AT ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH
A Special Guest in Eighth Grade Band
The eighth grade band students got a special treat yesterday--David Hattner, Music Director of the Portland Youth Philharmonic, served as a guest conductor.

In his visit with the OES musicians, David led the band through two of the pieces they're currently practicing: The Rowan Tree by Randall D. Standridge and The Lost Lady Found by Percy Aldridge Grainger. He also used his own clarinet to better illustrate musical concepts to the class.

This was an excellent opportunity for the students as they are preparing for an upcoming band festival on February 26. Check out a video from David's visit here!
Fifth Graders Bring Colonial Forts to Life
What does it take to build a colonial fort? And what would it be like to colonize a land? The fifth graders in Ms. Akehurst's and Mrs. Williams' classes have been exploring these questions together, well beyond the confines of a textbook.

After studying a fort's features, students agreed on a model for their own fort, and used mathematical concepts to create a map. Then, using that map and seventeenth-century surveying methods the classes established "Fort Jameskurst" in the field next to SPARC.

"While our fort is really a field of flags and twine," explained Ms. Akehurst, "many [students] have brought their parents after school to share the pride in their learning."
Inaugural Improv Night
"This is so exciting--we don't know what's going to happen!"

That was David Gomes' introduction to the audience gathered on Tuesday evening for the first-ever seventh grade improv night. Two teams of Gomes' students squared off in an epic match of theater sports, which included rapid fire creativity with props.

Audience participation became an element in the game entitled "Slideshow," resulting in the above photo of Eric Dams' mind meld moment with Kennin M. '21.

Teacher-judges Nancy Teskey, Dennis Chang, and Ryan Holland enhanced the absurdity with delightfully non-sensical scores such as $9.50, the square root of -1, and 10 points for Belgium. Well done, thespians!
Midwinter Madness Nets $13K
Results are in from the Upper School's annual Midwinter Madness fundraiser, and they're fantastic. The cumulative total raised from all the different events over the two weeks of MWM is. . .$13,142!

All funds will be donated to Camions of Care, and a donation of that size can support over 6,000 women with feminine hygiene products for one menstrual cycle.

Big kudos go to the six student leaders of MWM, to Katrina Perry and Chris Myers for their advisory help, and of course the Upper School students (like Hailey H., Rachael H., David S., Jane S., and Zach H., all '16) for donating time, money, effort, and energy to this very worthy cause!
MS Math Students Create Dream Backyards
"I knew this project was for me," wrote Isabella P. '21 of a special endeavor in her seventh grade mathematics class. "I could build anything I ever dreamed of, and I wouldn't be told no."
Isabella and Ms. von Ofenheim's other Math 7 students were recently given the chance to design their dream backyard. Using formulas and the concept of scale drawings, the young mathematicians made truly individualized spaces that included:
  • hot tubs
  • fire pits
  • sprinting tracks
  • pools
  • and even a dance floor!
Take a look at more of the students' projects, and who knows? Perhaps you'll find some inspiration for your next home improvement.
