Google Brings Virtual Reality to OES
The Google Expeditions Pioneer Program came to OES this week, giving teachers the opportunity to take their classes on virtual reality field trips! Using Google Cardboard viewers, students in grades 2-12 traveled to a wide variety of faraway lands.

Our Middle School Commons and drama room provided the settings for the full day of Google Expeditions. The middle schoolers explored the slopes of Mt. Fuji, meandered amongst the grandeur of Roman ruins, and took a literary tour of London.

One of Seora Daniel's Spanish classes (pictured above) visited Machu Picchu for their Expedition. As the students "walked" around the ancient Incan structure, they conversed entirely in Spanish with Seora Daniel about what they saw.
Inquiry in Action: LS Google Expeditions
"I found the answer to my question!"

Questions and inquiry are integral parts of the OES experience, and so to hear this exclamation from one of Mrs. Griffin's second graders as his class explored space travel was music to our ears.

Google Expeditions Day found the Lower School students journeying all over--from down into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean all the way up to the moon.

After their Expedition to Tanzania, Mrs. Blake's second grade class (pictured above) collaborated in small groups to share their thinking. One group discussed how the virtual field trip helped them understand Gombe National Park and Jane Goodall's work more deeply.

Their answers?

"You can look around!"
"It teaches you things you didn't know."
"You feel the place in your heart."

It's not every day a group of second graders gets to visit a Tanzanian national park without leaving Oregon. . .we're sure glad they got to do just that at OES this week!
US Students Travel the World for a Day
What do the Holy Places of Jerusalem, the Galapagos Islands, and the Palace of Versailles all have in common?

In addition to ideal vacation spots, they're all places Upper School students went on their Google Expeditions this week. Additionally, Catherine Molloseau's Senior Engineering Design Class (pictured above) studied what it takes to be an engineering professional.

This Expedition showcased a day in the life of Arthur Alzamora, a geotechnical engineer who has worked on projects in New York City--such as the renovation of St. Patrick's Cathedral. Noting the necessary equipment, skills, and relationships needed to be successful as an engineer, one student said, "This is pretty fascinating!"
Kindergarteners Connect with Construction
Everyone needs encouragement and motivation while working, and the construction professionals building our new Lower School are no exception.
The construction workers have done a great job answering questions that Lower School students have posed, both about the project and building in general. So Mrs. Burton's Kindergarten class, Builderville, decided to surprise the workers with a display of artwork for the site fence!

The members of Builderville walked down to the site as a group to formally present this thoughtful gift. Click through
