Grandparents & Special Friends Day!
Just before Thanksgiving, OES hosted some very honored guests. Over 300 grandparents and special friends were treated to a breakfast with students, musical performances, classroom visits, and a chapel service.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day has been a part of OES for over 20 years, and we thank all who helped make this year's event a success!
A Lower School Heart-to-Heart

Ms. Kucera and Ms. Kate's first grade class has been exploring Mindfulness concepts and practices.

As the children practice taking deep breaths and finding quiet, they become curious about their "inner story." While exploring the relationship between peace and the workings of their hearts and minds, questions have started to percolate, such as:

"Is the heart a tool?"
"How does the heart inspire curiosity?"
"Does the world have a curious heart?"

These insightful questions have led the students into a study of how the heart functions--as well as a study into the nature of curiosity itself!

The class has also engaged with these queries by setting up an interactive hallway exhibit, playing with building materials, and expressing ideas through art.
Write On! Student Work Selected for Publication
Three Upper School students have had their work selected for publication in an online journal! An upcoming edition of VoiceCatcher, which features writing by local women, will include work from Elie D., Sara B., and Raimy H. Nice work, ladies!
Go Figure: OES Students Tackle Math Competition
Pop Quiz: What do you get when you add OES students to real-life problems? Students in the honors elective math program recently participated in a National High School Modeling Competition aimed at finding ways to reduce city crime rates.

For 36 hours straight, 11 of our Upper School students crunched numbers, tested formulas, and at the end of it all submitted over 20 pages of mathematical solutions! Winners will be announced in January.
Fast Faculty Facts: Clint DeNyse
OES Middle School students know Clint DeNyse from their Spanish lessons as "Señor DeNyse." Here are a few things you might not know about one of OES's newest teachers:

1. Señor DeNyse was born in Montana and grew up in Ohio.
2. His very first teaching assignment was in Spain--with the Ministry of the Economy!
3. He has taught at both public and private schools in Portland over the past 15 years.
4. In his free time, Señor DeNyse is on the lookout for chanterelle mushrooms in the Tillamook State Forest.
AND. . .
5. Is a Rock, Paper, Scissors champion several times over. Don't hesitate to challenge him to a game!
