Bake Sale Funds Donated to The Girl Effect

The Middle School SLICK committee, which is the service learning student committee (Service Learning Is Cool and Kind) held a bake sale in April to raise funds for The Girl Effect, an organization that supports girls' education and rights around the world.

Last week Julie Addicott, from the Nike Foundation, visited Middle School chapel and gave a presentation on the work and reach of The Girl Effect.

The SLICK committee also presented her with a check for $568 from the bake sale. These funds will support the organization's work to improve situations for people across the world by investing in girls' education.

First Grade Learning Celebration
First grade classes are each doing something different to reflect on the journey of inquiry each class has taken this year.

Students in Ms. Kucera's class have been passionate about trees this year, so the students wrote a play about the tree cycle of life. They also created several original songs for the performance! View more photos on the OES Facebook page.

Thank You, Cafeteria and Maintenance Staff!
Students from the Buddhism classes honored the cafeteria and maintenance staff members at an appreciation event last week.

During the event the Upper School choir and fourth grade classes performed a few songs to show their appreciation.

Seniors Visit With Pre-K Students at Lifer Lunch
Prekindergarten students this week received a glimpse of the future from the Lifers -- seniors who have been at OES since prekindergarten, kindergarten, primary, or first grade.

They had lunch together and then had recess together while the parents of both groups compared notes on their children's experiences. View more photos here. View more photos here.

Spanish Classes Create Books
Eighth-graders in Ms. Daniels' Spanish class have been studying future tense. In preparation the class read all the books in the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie series in Spanish. The students then created their own books using all the vocabulary and grammar they've learned in Middle School, but particularly with the future tense.

Some of the translated titles were:
  • If You Give a Whale a Waffle
  • If You Give a Frog a Fly
  • If You Give a Panda Bamboo
  • If You Give a Duck a Plate
  • If You Give a Pig a Pickle

Some students have donated their books to be classroom examples and Ms. Daniels will bring some with her to Woodburn Learning Center on service learning days.

Students Earn Black Belts
(L-R) Mister Will, Logan Carter, Braeden Carter,
and Master Yoo
On April 25 at Reynolds High School in Portland, Logan '23 and Braeden C. '23 earned their taekwondo black belts after five years of hard work.

Attending classes at World Champion Taekwondo, the Carter boys began in the "Tiny Tigers" program as white belts.

They worked through all the white belt colored stripes and then into the colored belts, finally achieving their goal after many years of hard work.

The testing was done in two different gymnasiums with more than 200 people of all ages earning their black belts. It was an exhilarating and emotional experience for all involved, and the boys are proud of their accomplishment.
