Middle Schoolers Visit With Imam at Local Mosque

The entire 6th grade visited the
Bosniaks Educational and Cultural Organization (BECO) last Thursday morning for their third "Sacred Spaces Field Trip."  A collaborative effort between the OES Department of Religion and Philosophy and the Middle School Humanities Program, this was one of five local expeditions 6th-graders will take this year to sacred worship spaces of different world religions.   At BECO (a Muslim mosque), Imam Abdullah Polovina welcomed the group, sharing the history, sacred writings (the Qur'an), worship, and hospitality of Islam. At the end, Imam Addullah offered a BECO Certificate of Thanksgiving and a copy of the Qur'an to OES.

Asian Breakfast at Clay Street Table Hosted by OES Dormies

OES dorm students are regular cooks at Clay Street Table in downtown Portland. Earlier this month, they received a special charge from Father Paul Davis to create an Asian breakfast experience for older Chinese neighbors who didn't understand the mission of Clay Street Table. Our dormies cooked, hosted the new visitors, and connected by speaking in Mandarin.

The Asian breakfast was a great success -- 60 people came, way more than they expected, and they had some fascinating conversations. It was a real eye-opener for our students, for the elders, and the staff at Clay Street. They're planning to do another Asian breakfast next month, in conjunction with Lunar New Year.
