Vol. 6, Iss. 18

Dear Parents,

Messages from New BFA Board of Directors

Please join your Board of Directors in welcoming its newest parent-elected director Bryan Molen and board-appointed director Ann Citrin to the BFA Board. Each will serve a three-year term beginning this month. The Board looks forward to working with Bryan and Ann and fully integrating them into the team. Together, we are honored to serve you and uphold BFA's mission and vision.

The following message is from Bryan Molen, at-large director, BFA Board of Directors:

I am very excited for the opportunity to serve as BFA's newest board member.
My wife, Stephanie, and I have lived in Highlands Ranch since 2010 with our three kids, Kaitlyn, Jacob and Jackson.  Kaitlyn is finishing up fourth grade, and Jacob is finishing up first grade; both of them started at BFA in 2014. Jackson will start kindergarten in the fall of 2016. We, as a family, have experienced both private and public education, and can sincerely say we feel so blessed with the opportunity to be a part of the BFA community.  We have been very committed and involved - Stephanie devoting much of her time - since we started in 2014. We look forward to a continued commitment and meaningful involvement over the years to come.

I am currently employed as a vice president with Aon Risk Solutions, which is the largest risk management and insurance brokerage in the world. I have been in this industry for 13 years, working primarily with large market commercial business with the primary focus of mitigating their exposure to risk, while ensuring their long term stability, growth and profitability.  I have also served on a number of boards over the years and feel that the experience I have garnered there, along with both my professional and life experience, will allow me to make a meaningful contribution to the BFA Board of Directors, as well as the BFA community as a whole.

On a personal note, I have a number of passions in life. The most important is being able to spend time with my family - whether it is exploring, sports or just hanging out at home. I really enjoy traveling and the opportunity to be outside - from golf to hiking. Lastly, I have a deep passion for food and love to both cook and eat - life is a matter of taste.

We love BFA and appreciate all that is has meant to our family. It is my goal to give what I can of myself to ensure that Ben Franklin Academy continues in its mission and vision to challenge our students and provide them the opportunity to develop and excel both academically and personally.

The following message is from Ann Citrin, at-large director, BFA Board of Directors:

I am honored to serve as one of BFA's two new incoming directors. My husband, Michael, and I live in Highlands Ranch with our two children. Molly is finishing third grade, and Mark is finishing kindergarten. We love the BFA community and have been involved with the school since before the school was built. It is exciting to see how much the school has grown, and we are thrilled to continue to be involved with its future.

In my past life, I was an attorney at the Denver office of an international law firm where I counseled clients on complex commercial litigation issues related to intellectual property.  Currently, I stay at home with my kiddos and our new puppy. When I can find free time, I love to ski, hike and travel with my family.

I am excited to serve our school in this new position. I believe we are extremely fortunate to have an amazing school with such a stable solid foundation. I will work hard to ensure we maintain our strong presence, as well as push our school to be better.

Thank You

Our sincere gratitude goes to outgoing directors Jason Sunahara and Kimberly Smith and their families. Jason, outgoing treasurer and a founding director of the BFA Board, has served our community for more than six years. Kimberly has diligently served our community as a director over the last year. We know that the Sunahara and Smith families will remain involved in the BFA community for years to come and wish them the best.

Sincerely,
Bob Barber

SUPPORT BFA'S BUDDING ARTISTS

Thanks to all of the students who made the Art Contest held at BFA a huge success! Fourth graders Terry Hanson and Natalie Kent organized the event and had a difficult time picking the winners as there were so many excellent works of art submitted by the students. After much deliberation, they chose the following winners: Audrey Kim (K-2 grades), Lilly Hanson (3-5 grades) and Katelynne Altonen (6-8 grades). Congratulations to our winners! Each received a king size candy bar of their choice.

Now that the art has been collected and judged, it is time for parents to help out! Come to the Art Auction from 4-6 p.m., TOMORROW, Friday, May 13, in the art room to see all of the wonderful works of art and purchase the piece of your choice. The minimum bid on the art pieces is $5 (there is no cap), and all proceeds go directly to Mrs. Hinkle and the art department. Please bring cash or check.

BFA CUB SCOUT END-OF-YEAR CELEBRATION

The members of BFA Cub Scout Pack 785 - including new members plus anyone interested in joining who will be in grades K-3 next fall - are invited to an end-of-year celebration from 6:30-8 p.m., Monday, May 16, in the commons (located on the second floor, south end of the building). We are celebrating the past year of scouting fun, thanks to the awesome leadership of Jason Sunahara and Reid Hanson.

This is an opportunity for new scouts to meet current pack members before the summer break and for potential scouts/parents to check things out. There will be fun activities and games for all. Although we plan to meet in the commons, if the weather is nice, we can take some or all of our activities outside. Parents are encouraged to help out or participate. We request that you bring a snack to share, though it's not required. Bottles of water will be provided.

Jason and Reid have completed their terms, so Pack 785 needs volunteers for all three leadership positions, including Cubmaster.

Please note: Boy Scouting regulations require at least one parent per scout at meetings. If you want, you can drop off your son for this particular event, but he needs a parent-approved adult to supervise him.
Global Finals 2016
SUPPORT YOUR BFA DI GLOBAL FINALS TEAMS

Please help BFA's two Destination Imagination (DI) teams as they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to participate in DI Global Finals where they will compete among more than 1,400 teams from more than 15 countries. To attend, BFA's teams must raise $1,300 per person, which covers registration fees, air transportation and transfers, shipping costs, and on-campus housing and meals. The Douglas County School District (DCSD), DI South Metro Region and BFA's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) have already generously contributed to our fundraising efforts, but we need additional help.

To financially help both teams, please visit the BFA Store by clicking here to donate. The funds will be divided equally between the students and chaperones. If you need a receipt for your taxes, please email the PTO.

To individually help the teams, please visit their GoFundMe accounts:
In addition, the Musical Mashup team will be selling refreshments at tonight's after school musical theatre performance (6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 12, at Ranch View Middle School).
At the state competition, BFA's two team placed as follows:
  • First Place, Musical Mashup (structural challenge): The team was required to design and build a structure that both supports weight and is a musical instrument, as well as play a musical solo using the structure as a musical instrument. They also had to create a skit that tells a story with at least one musical character and integrate the story with the weight placement testing of the structure.
  • Second Place, In Plain Sight (scientific challenge): The team was required to research the many ways that camouflage is used by organisms in nature and showcase that research in the visible appearance of an organism. They also had to create a skit that has a plot twist caused by the use of camouflage and apply camouflage methods to an original, team-designed and created set piece or prop.
Thank you for helping the teams partake in this unique opportunity!

GROCERY CARDS RAISE MORE THAN $10,000 FOR BFA IN 2015-16

As the school year draws to a close, BFA's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) would like to bring you up to date on what the school has raised with its ongoing fundraising programs via Target, King Soopers and Safeway. These programs offer a simple yet effective - and such an effortless - way to earn money for BFA. We're not kidding when we say shopping at these places earns money for BFA that is as easy as 1-2-3!

Target REDcard
: BFA received more than $5,000 from Target in January for its most recent donation. (Through its Take Charge of Education program, Target donates 1 percent of purchases back to BFA via its Target REDcard.) Over the course of BFA's existence and participating in Target's Take Charge of Education program, BFA has received more than $17,000! The amount accumulated toward our next and FINAL donation from Target is more than $1,600. Target is ending its Take Charge of Education program on Saturday, May 14, so keep using your Target REDcard card through then so BFA gets as much bang for its buck as possible!

King Soopers and Safeway: The King Soopers and Safeway fundraising programs donate 5 percent of your purchases back to the school. All you have to do is load your King Soopers and/or Safeway gift card at customer service or the register before you scan your first item. You can use the gift cards for groceries and at King Soopers/Safeway Fuel Centers! For this school year, BFA has received more than $4,000 from King Soopers and more than $1,500 from Safeway.

To purchase a $5 BFA King Soopers and/or Safeway card(s), please go to the BFA Store or click here. Purchases continue to accumulate, so even while school is out over the summer, you can be financially supporting BFA! For questions or more information, email Amy Sunahara, Grocery Card coordinator.
Tyson Project
KEEP CLIPPING - DON'T FORGET THE TYSON LABELS!

BFA participates in the Tyson Project A+™ program, a fundraising program sponsored by Tyson Foods, Inc. Through this program, BFA can raise up to $12,000 for our school each year! The money can go toward supplies, building improvements, school programs or anything else we choose. It's an easy way to raise much needed funds by sending Tyson Project A+ labels from products you probably already buy. Here's how it works: Just clip and collect Tyson Project A+ labels from participating Tyson product packages and send them to school with your Box Tops. We'll collect the labels and send them to Tyson Foods, and Tyson Foods will send our school a check. Each label is worth 24. It's such an easy way to raise funds for our school!

Middle school students must have both filled out by 11:59 p.m., Monday, May 23, to be able to participate in Field Day.

There is not as much of a need for volunteers because the middle school elective is in charge of running most of the elementary Field Days; however, we do need many volunteers for the middle school Field Day. If you would like to volunteer for Field Day, please click here.

Please remember the following for Field Day:
  • Put sunscreen on your child before you send him/her to school.
  • Send your child to school with a water bottle.
  • Make sure your child is dressed in his/her Field Day T-shirt, as well as wearing appropriate shoes and athletic shorts.
Students
are working on kicking skills (passing and dribbling). They also are getting to try out some other manipulatives. They are batting, as well as throwing and hitting with different kinds of equipment.

Students are playing soccer. They are learning different soccer skills and participating in some soccer-type games.
Students are playing many large group games. They love these!
Students are doing their end-of-the-year fitness tests. The fitness test consists of the mile run, sit-ups, push-ups, PACER (Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run) test, and the sit-and-reach test. They made goals for themselves last fall and are hoping to reach their goals now.
Students are doing the fitness tests as well. Fifth grade students also are doing a golf unit. One of the pros at the Highlands Ranch Golf Course will be spending three days with each of our fifth graders at BFA teaching them about golf and how to swing the clubs. They will then be walking to the Highlands Ranch Golf Course for a lesson at the club on the morning of Friday, May 20. If you have not yet registered your fifth grader for this field trip, please do so by clicking here. Choose "Field Trips" and "Fifth Grade.
In Field Day Planning, students are starting to practice teaching their station to the preschool students. They are working out kinks and making their station perfect for the Elementary Field Day. Thank you to the preschoolers for helping out our middle school students.

In Indoor Recess Game Making, students have been working hard to create and produce games to give to the elementary teachers. Some groups have completed their movement games and delivered them to the teachers. Hopefully, they will come in handy next year as we do not want any more indoor recesses this year!
Officer Hays recently joined in a game of dodge ball with BFA students during P.E. during his rounds at the school. Looks like it was a good game!

The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) highlights one (or more) volunteer(s) each month who has gone above and beyond in his/her contributions to the school. This volunteer receives recognition in this newsletter and on the school website. S/he also has the privilege to park in one of our reserved parking spaces.

Volunteer of the Month
For May, we have chosen Mindy Pooler.
When not working or commuting, you can find Mindy volunteering her time at BFA.  She has been an executive officer on the PTO for the past two years. In this role, she managed many of the large social events including the Harvest Festival, Ben Franklin's Birthday, Father/Daughter Dance and Mother/Son Event. Before her officer position, she was the Restaurant Night coordinator and assisted with the BENefit Bash including co-chairing the Bash in 2015. Mindy and her husband feel extremely fortunate to have their two children at BFA and enjoy the opportunity to give back to their children's' school.

When asked what she likes best about BFA, Mindy said, "The wonderful community of parents, children, teachers and administration all working toward the same end goal. I can't imagine any other place for our children to learn and grow!"

Mindy and her family moved to Highlands Ranch five years ago from Boston, Mass. Mindy is married to Jayson, and they have two sons - William (third grade) and Zachary (kindergarten).  Mindy works full time as a Salesforce administrator for a small tech company in Denver.

Thank you Mindy! You make BFA a better place!

Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.
Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, and literacy. We will be a data driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering the arts, sports, nature, and character.
Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Purity and Humility.
