2016AppleAwards Dear Parents,

Last Call to Nominate for the 2016 Apple Awards

Who has the best teachers in the Douglas County School District (DCSD)? The answer is easy - Ben Franklin Academy does. I truly believe that we have a highly dedicated group of teachers who go above and beyond every day, making sure your kids are educated in a safe and caring environment to where they feel comfortable and confident to take chances. They have established high expectations for all students and provide all of the tools necessary for students to accomplish these expectations. Of course, our success is not complete without the tremendous efforts of our support personnel, which includes the office staff, custodial staff, lunchroom staff and our instructional aides. I know that the BFA parent community appreciates our teachers and staff and demonstrates that in many different ways. There is a formal opportunity to show your appreciation - the DCSD Apple Awards.

The Apple Awards were created in 2006 to provide an opportunity to recognize and celebrate excellent, innovative teachers, administrators and support staff. Nominations for the Apple Awards are submitted online by staff, students, parents and members of the community. You may nominate more than one person. Nominations must be made using the online form, no exceptions. The nomination window is now through Sunday, Oct. 4.

Nominations can be made by going to the Douglas County Educational Foundation website by clicking here.

Lunch Update

Nutrislice NOW Available
Nutrislice is up and running for October! The Douglas County School District (DCSD) Nutrition Services website makes it easy to find the daily lunch entree, as well as photos, nutrition information and allergens for each entree. PLEASE NOTE: The snack options are for middle school only. Nutrislice is located by clicking here.

No Glass Containers
Due to safety concerns for our students, the lunch room staff requests that parents please refrain from using glass containers in lunch boxes. Please pack lunch items in plastic containers, as we have had instances of glass shattering on the gym floor when dropped. Thank you!

Fall Break BASE Camp

This is your LAST CHANCE to register for BFA's Fall Break Before/After School Enrichment (BASE) Camp.

The program will provide care during the week of Fall Break (Monday, Oct. 12, through Friday, Oct. 16). It will be similar to summer camp, minus the field trips. At least 15 families must sign up for the program. BASE will be open from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m., and the cost is $35 per day per child.

We will be having lots of fun this week. On Monday, we will be playing and building with life-sized Legos in the gym. Additional activities include in-house dart gun wars, science day, arts and crafts and cookie decorating, just to name a few. Registration opened Sept. 21 and closes TOMORROW, Friday, Oct. 2, so be sure to get registered!

All registrations are nonrefundable unless the required number of families do not enroll. (If this occurs, those who have already enrolled will be notified on Monday, Oct. 5, and refunded their money.)
If the turnout is an overwhelming success, BASE could possibly open up a Spring Break BASE Camp as well.

To register online, please click here and choose BASE Camp. Families who have not paid the 2015-16 BASE registration fee of $25 will be contacted to do so. To obtain the registration paperwork and parent handbook please click here. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Savoy.

Art: Featured BFA Special of the Week

Each week in this newsletter, we highlight one of BFA's Specials and what each grade in the school is learning in that particular Special.
This week, we are focusing on Art. (You can always find information about BFA's Specials by clicking here.)

We have been making canvas panels for the National Dream Rocket Project this week. The theme we have been asked to work on is "American Heroes" and is to be part of a Veteran's Day exhibition at the Harris Corporation in Colorado Springs. Younger grades have been busy drawing our military heroes, and the Painting and Drawing class have been putting them together. So beautiful! For more information, click here.

Many classes have had Free Art Day this week. Three times a year, students are allowed to bring in recycled materials to create heir own projects. (Dates are on Mrs. Hinkle's website.) Children have a chance to invent, think critically, work collaboratively and be totally self-directed. The Colorado State Standards are being met during this lesson, but more importantly to your children, they are having so much fun!

Kindergarten: We have been learning how to mix our colors. Our new vocabulary words are primary and secondary. We made some lovely secondary colors and have created some cute colorful caterpillars from all our swatches.

First Grade:
We have been creating some amazing owls, learning how to blend oil pastels to make new colors and create texture. The backgrounds contain some lovely night skies including some very interesting "super blood moons."

Second Grade:
We have been busy making ancient Greek amphoras. We have tried using paper and clay to create these ancient relics.  The results are timeless.

Third Grade: We have started to learn about the Principles of Design. We have looked at the work of George Rodrigues and his Blue Dog paintings, noticing how he uses contrasting colors to create emphasis. We are now busy making our own Blue Dog paintings. They are very interesting.

Fourth Grade: We're starting our unit on medieval art and architecture. We are looking at the Gothic Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, particularly the stained glass windows and gargoyles.

Fifth Grade:
We have just started a new painting incorporating many techniques. The subject is "birds in the trees" and involves sponges, watercolors, sharpies and card painting. These are fun and whimsical pictures.

Electives: In Painting and Drawing, we have been using pens to draw houses with texture and detail. We have added watercolors to create some beautiful paintings. In Jewelry Making, we have been busy making beaded bracelets, charm bracelets and corded bracelets. Some students are creating beads out of paper for their own project designs.
Original Works
Original Works Fundraiser

Every year, your children create beautiful pictures for the
Original Works Company.
Families then purchase unique gifts for the holidays with their own beautiful, original artwork. Original Works lets BFA keep some of the profits, and you get a hassle-free way of shopping!

Artwork will be mailed to Original Works next week, and a letter will be coming home to parents in early November with information on how to buy the products. Please email Mrs. Hinkle with any questions.

The following includes samples of artwork to be submitted to Original Works for each grade (K-5):

BENefit Bash
LAST CALL for BENefit Bash Donations

This is the last week for BENefit Bash Donations! All donations are due by Friday, Oct. 9, and we still need your donations to make this year's primary fundraiser a success.
  • If you have not already contributed to your class basket or middle school class gift, please consider giving the suggested donation of $10 per student.
  • If you have a home-based business, we'd appreciate your donations for the BENefit Bash.  Donating a basket of items not only helps the school, but it is a great way to advertise your business and helps generate repeat customers.
  • If you have an expertise in some area, please consider donating your services. For example, music lessons, one-on-one sports coaching, ski or snowboard instruction, lessons for kids (sewing, chess), etc. And, if you are an expert chef/baker, please consider offering your services as a donation - donate two dozen cupcakes for a birthday party or even offer to be the "guest chef" at a house party for 10.
  • In addition, we are looking for families willing to host Spectacular Socials - theme-based parties or events hosted by you. You select the theme, meeting place and how many guests will be allowed to attend. In the past, Spectacular Socials have included a "Margaritas with Moms" night; "Beer, Brats and Bob" party; and "Fourth Grade Mustache" party.
Contact the Silent Auction Committee via email if you are interested in any of these donation options, and we can talk you through the process so this works for you.

Thanks to all of you who donated wine for the BENefit Bash's Cork Pull during the Harvest Festival! You have another opportunity to donate wine next week during Parent-Teacher conferences. The value of your wine donations should be between $15-$50 per bottle. We also are still looking for baskets, bubble wrap and cellophane. All donations will be accepted at the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) tables during conferences. Donors will be entered into a drawing for a Starbucks gift card.

Harvest Festival:
A Fun Family BFA Tradition

More than 900 people attended BFA's Fifth Annual Harvest Festival last Saturday. We had beautiful weather to enjoy the fun outside activities coordinated by i9 Sports (who handed out 475 Bingo cards!) and delicious choices at the food trucks. The cake walk was once again one of the most popular attractions with an amazing assortment of creative cakes. Our new Minute-to-Win-It games and Just Dance were a big hit with the kids. The children delighted in all the options available, including games, prizes, treats, balloon sculptures and inflatable slide. We heard many comments saying, "This is the best Harvest Festival ever!"

Harvest Congratulations to the winners of the candy corn guess who received gift cards - Ashlyn Reedy and Kelly Sivess! The correct number of candy pieces was 887.

Harvest
Thank you to the many fantastic volunteers who helped make this night such a success. We could not have done it without you! Thank you to all our bakers who provided scrumptious goodies, Ben's Brigade for parking assistance, encouraging game volunteers, those helping set-up and decorate and all those who stayed late to get things back in order. We had a tremendous amount of help from our middle school students. National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) students rock! Special thanks to our talented and hard-working team - Mindy Pooler, Christi Richardson, Shari Richard, Allie Warner, Melissa Powell, Jennifer Dela'o, Jennifer Gautier, Rachael Hamburger, Ellen Singleton, Jonathan Feifarek, Tom Devlin, Serena Grissom, Tina Shoemaker and NJHS Madison Powell.

Mission: Our mission is to develop young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.

Vision: Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, and literacy. We will be a data driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering the arts, sports, nature, and character.

13 Virtues:
Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Purity and Humility.
