Ben Franklin Academy
Dear Parents,
Students will continue with NWEA testing this week and finish by next Wednesday. All teachers, with the exception of social studies, have devoted one day this week to take their content area assessment. Once testing has finished and we have scores available, we will distribute them to students. |

Science Fair
|
Last week, we had the opportunity to have Dawn Cseh visit each science class to talk about display boards. Dawn had previously judged science fair competitions and offered students some terrific advice. Some of her recommendations included:
For Project Boards- Not too over crowded and not too empty. Lay the board on the ground and place your elements before attaching and look at it.
- The board is intended to be a summary of your project, not include every detail. All of your details should and can be in the binder next to your board. I told the students they needed the binder because Regionals needed it (Mrs. Denham also told them that).
- Keep colors of the board to one or two.
- Don't put anything additional with your board unless absolutely critical, and ask first.
- NO LIVE ANIMALS.
- Don't use a small font that is difficult to read.
- Use straight lines for graphs or print them.
- Pictures are OK if they provide value. If you take pictures, you can't be in them.
- No personally identifiable information on the front. Regionals only wants the information on the back.
For Judging- The judges will ask questions such as, "Tell me about your project," "How would you improve it next time?" and "What would you change if you had to do it over?"
- It's OK to be nervous; the judges are there to help.
- If you have to look at your binder, that's OK.
Projects should be completed this week, and students should be ready to speak about their projects to a judge next week. Sixth grade students will display their projects on Wednesday, Jan. 23; seventh grade students will display theirs on Thursday, Jan. 24. The Science Fair will be held in the Commons Area on both days. The schedule students will follow for these two days includes:
| Jan. 23 | 6th | Jan. 24 | 7th | | Set-up | 8-9 a.m. | Take Down | 8-8:45 a.m. | | Judge | 9:30 a.m. - noon | Set-up | 8:45-9:30 a.m. | | Lunch | Noon-12:35 p.m. | Judge | 9:30 a.m. - noon | | Classes | 12:45-2 p.m. | Lunch | Noon-12:35 p.m. | | Classes | 2-3 p.m. | Classes | 12:45-2 p.m. | | Parents | 4-5 p.m. | Classes | 2-3 p.m. | | Take Down | 5 p.m. | Parents | 4-5 p.m. | | | Take Down | 5 p.m. |
Students received the handbook from Mrs. Denham in November. If your student misplaced his/hers, s/he may click here to access the handbook. Twelve students will be given the opportunity to attend the Regional Science Fair.

Student Council
| |
Students have begun to turn in student council permission forms. The first day of filming speeches was Tuesday. Attached is the document outlining roles of each member and the benefits to joining the student council. I will continue filming speeches during advisory on Tuesday, Jan. 22, and Tuesday, Jan. 29. Seventh grade students going to Space Camp will need to take advantage of the Jan. 22 date before departing to Huntsville.
