Ben Franklin Academy
Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a well-deserved and relaxing break. We are now headed into the New Year and are already partway through the second trimester. Next week, starting on Monday, Jan. 14, students will be taking the second round of Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) tests. This week, students will receive a goal setting worksheet to take home. It will show them their projected growth for the winter assessment and what they received during their fall assessment. I will be discussing what these numbers mean with students and why we use this assessment with them. Please take the time to review your student's goals with him/her for the winter assessment. |

Science Fair
|
Wednesday, Jan. 23, and Thursday, Jan. 24, will be the middle school Science Fair. It will be held in the Commons Area on both days. Sixth grade students will display their projects on Jan. 23; seventh grade students will display theirs on Jan. 24.
This Friday, Jan. 11, we will have a guest speaker for our middle school students to discuss exemplary display boards. Dawn Cseh has previously judged at the Regional Science Fair and will share her observations and recommendations to students as they begin to piece their display boards together.
During the middle school Science Fair, 24 students will be chosen to go through a judging process. This process will narrow the 24 students down to 12. These 12 students will be given the opportunity to attend the Regional Science Fair.

Student Council
| |
During the advisory period this week, students were given information for joining the student council. It is my hope to give our student body a voice by providing this student leadership group each year. This year's student council elected representatives will hold their positions until the beginning of the 2013-14 school year. Positions will then be up for re-election this September. Attached is a document outlining roles of each member and the benefits to joining the student council. I will film speeches during advisory on Wednesday, Jan. 16; Tuesday, Jan. 22; and Tuesday, Jan. 29. Seventh grade students going to Space Camp will need to take advantage of the Jan. 16 and Jan. 22 dates before departing to Huntsville.

Sudoku Club

We are excited to offer a Sudoku Club to interested students starting after school from 3:30-4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 16, in Mrs. Crespo's room (264). It is open to all Ben Franklin Academy students and is free of charge. To sign up, email Mr. Cochrane and express your interest by providing your student's name(s), grade level and experience level with Sudoku math puzzles.
Dee Duncan, a dedicated volunteer and STEM committee member, will lead the after school club. All experience levels are welcome.
