Quote of the Week
Dear Preschool Families,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Fall Break.  Your children learned a lot of valuable information from the fire department this week.  They explained when and how to call 911, talked about fire safety and showed them how a firefighter looks in full gear so they are not scared in the event of an emergency.  I hope each of you are going over emergency plans for your family.

Classroom Highlights

Here are some highlights of the week:

  • Mrs. Furnier's class had a fire station in their classroom this week.  They learned how to call 911 and respond to emergency calls.  They also made K-9 fire hats so the children were also able to act out being a rescue dog!
  • Mrs. Olson's class has been busy learning all about numbers.  They have focused on counting, making a number book and writing their numbers.  Ask your child about the number rap!
  • Mrs. Spurgeon's class learned about the life cycle of an apple, tasted apples, charted their favorite and made their very own applesauce.  The room smelled so yummy!
Field Days

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to make our field days a success.  The children worked hard and had a lot of fun!  Pictures will be posted on class web pages soon!

Kindergarten Enrollment

It is time to start the enrollment process for kindergarten!  If your child will be attending kindergarten for the 2013-14 school year, and you wish to place them in the Ben Franklin Academy lottery, please click here to complete the online form.

Preschool families are now eligible for priority placement!  Our full enrollment policy can be found here

Vision Screening
We will be providing free vision screening on Thursday, Nov. 15, and Friday, Nov. 16, through KidSight.

What is KidSight?

KidSight Colorado is a project of the Lions Clubs of Colorado that provides vision screening for young children and education about vision in children.  Vision screening is provided free of charge to children ages 2 to 6 throughout the state of Colorado.

Why Vision Screening?

The first few years of a child's life are critical in the development of good vision.  Preschoolers should have their vision checked for issues such as misaligned eyes and problems that need correction with eyeglasses.  These problems are not always evident by simply looking at a child.  Young children often compensate for vision problems so well that parents, teachers and pediatricians are unaware of a problem.  By the time a child is old enough to be in primary grades, many of these common vision-robbing conditions can no longer be effectively treated.  Amblyopia can develop when an undetected vision problem goes untreated during a child's formative years.  The incidence of amblyopia in the United States is estimated to be 3 percent to 5 percent of the population.  Vision problems also can result in learning difficulties as a child enters the primary grades.

What do I need to do?

In order to participate in this great service, a consent form needs to be completed before Thursday, Nov. 15.  Please click here for the appropriate form.  If you do not want your child to participate, nothing needs to be done.  Your child's vision is priceless, so please take advantage of this great resource.
When Should I Keep My Child Home?

With the cold and flu season approaching, it is important to be aware of our illness policy.  In general, keep your child home if your child:

  • Has a fever over 100 degrees
  • Has diarrhea or vomiting
  • Has an explained rash
  • Has a contagious infection
  • Is overly lethargic
  • Seems sicker than symptoms present
If you are ever in doubt about whether to keep your child home, please refer to this form or contact me.  In the event your child will be out ill, simply email me.  Please note that it is important for me to know if your child has any communicable diseases per Tri-County Health guidelines.
Morning Drop-Off

We now have a designated car pool volunteer during morning drop-off.  Please park where directed as s/he is there to ensure that no one gets blocked in.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Quote of the Week

Mrs. Spurgeon explained Fall Break to her class the other week and how many "sleeps" they would be home.  Leilah was very concerned and said, "But I don't have my robe."

Sincerely,
