Camera Action demise....No-one wins!

Last week, as we have all no doubt heard, Camera Action Camera House, one of the biggest specialty stores in our country, went into liquidation.

It is not for me to comment on why, who, when or what.

But as someone fairly intimate with the store, having worked in a number of roles there for a total of 14 years over my 28-year photo retail career, I feel I have something to say.

To many it is just another store closure, a sign of the tough times we find ourselves in.

But to the staff, past and present, that have lived a good portion of their lives under that roof it has many more connotations.

In the movie 'The Castle' they state:

It's not a house, It's a home.

It's got everything...it's a place for the family to turn to, come back to.

Camera Action was not just a store, it was much more.

There was life, death, pain, joy and love and everything in between.

During my time there we lost loved employees to untimely, tragic deaths.

Whilst  the store still stood there always seemed to be a living connection to those two guys.

That will no longer be the case.

Last year they lost another long-term staff member to that insidious disease cancer. He was part of the furniture.

The store always seemed that much emptier afterwards.

Several other past employees, the lifeblood, the character and substance that built the store have also passed.

They will all be missed.

Camera Action Camera House - by Glynn Lavender

I resumed work with Camera Action in 1997 after returning to Melbourne from long term travel.

During that trip I met my wife and mother of my children.

It was the job that helped us move into our own flat and then our own house.

It was a house that was completely furnished by money made from spivs.

Looking around at pieces of furniture I see connections back to those heady first days of our relationship.

All entwined around the thread of a store.

Over my years there I saw relationships among staff start, flourish, and sometimes, lead to marriage and children.

Connections that would never have happened had it not been for the store.

I saw staff leave to try out careers as actors, photographers, models and many more.

I saw some of those staff return, sometimes a little bruised by life, but welcomed back to the store and into 'the family'.

Camera Action always seemed to be a place you could return to.

I saw some go on to lead lives as war photographers, film directors, artists and teachers.

We all felt a little like we had some small part in their successes.

I saw people start great friendships with co-workers on their first day of work.

I see (from Facebook stalking) that many of those friendships continue today.

Over my years I have seen hundreds of staff come and go.

All touched and were touched by those around them and the environment in which they shared.

Camera Action.

There are many new faces that have been through the store in the years since I was there.

There are many there now I do not know.

That doesn't stop me feeling the pain and uncertainty they must be feeling.

Camera Action Camera House was not unique.

There are stores like this all around the country.

Yours is probably one too.

It's one of the things that make retailing such a great job to be in.

Sadly these bonds look to be no more at Camera Action.

It feels like losing another staff member.

We are all poorer for its demise.

No one is a winner here.

Vale Ken Dobson

Our old friend Ken Dobson passed away last week aged 80 years. He was known to many of us as being a really good hearted person whose humour and infectious  laugh were well known.

His career spanned many years in the Photo Industry, initially with Milversons working with Joe Mitchell and Terry Rimmer, then with Hanimex at Brookvale where many of us watched his energy and enthusiasm marketing Fuji products across Australia. Ken then joined Fletchers Photographics where he was responsible for buying and marketing for the Fletchers franchisees. In later life he moved to the South Coast where he became involved in a Farmers Produce organisation.

As Terry Rimmer has found in his phone calls to industry members (Please contact Terry if you wish to pass on your condolences on 0418 546558), so many of us had contact with Ken at various stages throughout his career.

The last Industry event Ken attended was David English's funeral last year. He was then showing early signs of dementia which apparently deteriorated in recent times.

Ken is survived by his wife, Bernice, and daughters Meredith and Kelly.

We will have a lemonade for you on Wednesday Ken!

Funeral details as below:
2:30pm Wednesday 6th March:
Memorial Service
Meroo Church
Cnr Boxsells Lane & Princes Hwy
Meroo Meadow (Past Berry on way to Nowra)

Time to start preparing for National Photo Month
 Part Two- by Glynn Lavender

Last week's Newsline went out before I had time to finish my piece on National Photo Month.

So here it is in its entirety.

June is 'National Photo Month' or is it May?

The 'official' National Photo Month through PMA is in May however last year the UK put all its emphasis on June in their National Photo Month celebrations.

When is the REAL National Photo Month?

Who cares!!

It doesn't REALLY exist here anyway so we can make it whenever we want.

But we surely should do something to put photography on the agenda nationally and get some focus on local photo suppliers.

The point is we need to start putting things into place now regardless of the month we choose to use. It takes time to build a successful event - the time to start is now.

PMA Australia are running another series of Infotography sessions in June (hosted by yours truly) so it makes sense to piggyback those sessions as part of the educational side of National Photo Month in your store.

What else can you do?

1) Run a photo competition - set weekly themes for people to post on your Facebook page (a great way to keep people connecting with your page)

2) Get some local pros to come in once a week and do an evening photography talk or go even bigger and hire a local hall and put them all on one night.

Charge a few bucks and make a big deal of it.  ( I assure you there are a bunch of pros who would just love the chance to show off their knowledge)

3) Deals of the Day - promote a different in store special each day - keep customers watching your business daily for a month!

4) Tip of the Day - make up a window poster that changes daily - a great way to get people stopping as they pass your business.

5) Lab Tour - Invite your customers in to see the behind the scenes operation of your lab and expose them to a whole range of products they may not know you produce.

6) Photo Walk - take your customers on a photo walk around your local area - get them to see their everyday environment with new eyes. It doesn't take much to organise and it doesn't require a lot of photo skill. Just some tips, advice and some laughs.

7) 2 minute tip videos - they don't have to be masterpieces, just get some good sound and good advice. Post them wherever you can to get them noticed.

The point is DO SOMETHING!

It's a long way from June to Christmas - why not jump on any excuse to talk photography to your customers.

A chance to share some knowledge and fun.

Give your customers a chance to hang out with fellow photo enthusiasts.

One of the biggest thrills my customers get is to spend a day with like-minded, passionate people.

So why not become the facilitator of this environment?

Spend a month giving your customers an excuse to stop in and see what's happening.

Sure, national photo month doesn't REALLY exist..... unless we want it to!

What's the worst that can happen?
