"Country Pricing" - where you live dictates how much you pay! - by Glynn Lavender

John Paxton sent through an interesting piece this week from Canada on 'country pricing'.

That amorphous reasoning used by manufacturers to justify cost price differences in different regions.

It looks like Canada faces many of the same issues we face in Australia but is exacerbated by the fact that they are physically so close the United States.

The Marketplace report states:

Canadians are paying far more than Americans for the same products because of a systemic and unjustifiable mark-up scheme by many manufacturers, a retail expert says.

A Marketplace report on Canada-U.S. price gaps found Canadians paying higher prices - more than double in some cases - for the same retail goods because of an industry phenomenon called "country pricing."

"Multi-national brands, they have two different price lists ... (one) for retailers in Canada, and (one) for retailers in the United States," says Diane Brisebois, president of the Retail Council of Canada.

"And I can guarantee you that the price lists for retailers in Canada [have] prices that are between 10 to 50 per cent higher than the prices in the United States."

In some cases, the final sale price is much more.

You can watch the report filed by 'Marketplace' here

For the full article you can read it here

Another interesting viewpoint happens when you compare the latest hourly wages in the US and Canada. There is indeed a marginal difference in earnings but other reasoning such as transportation and smaller market place issues.

US Hourly Wage
US Hourly Average Wage
Canadian Hourly Wage
Canadian Hourly Average Wage

I used to live in Vancouver and it's close proximity to the US border and it's far cheaper petrol pricing. The savings were substantial enough for such a short trip to be more than worthwhile to the locals but certainly impacted businesses in the area.  That was 15 years ago when the dollar was nowhere near parity.

It will be interesting to watch how the Canadian Government tackles this issue.

Will it give precedence for Australian Retailers to push our Government?

News From USA - Why the Big Photo Show?

In Vegas for PMA@CES there was much discussion about the upcoming Big Photo Show in Los Angeles.

There were also lots of questions about why PMA were running it and what they hoped to achieve from holding it. This weeks DIMAcast answers a lot of those questions.

Every year, PMA interviews its new president in an effort to allow the membership to learn more about him. But, since new PMA president Allen Showalter is just beginning his third term, we all know him pretty well already.

Instead, I decided to take this opportunity to pass on to Allen many of the questions I heard from members during PMA@CES and the pre-show conferences last month - mostly centering on The Big Photo Show

On this episode of the DIMAcast, listen in as Allen answers those questions and more.

Nothing short of everything.... Pt2 - by Glynn Lavender

A couple of weeks ago I wrote an article entitled 'Nothing short of everything's enough' with regards to how we have to approach business these days.

Last week I also commented on a piece from the McCurry Ideas exchange with regards to a store in the US that was running one on one lessons using their most experienced trainer to do so.

Well after feedback from several people in the industry who thought I was implying that they should stop what they were doing and change to group training to maximise profits I thought I would clarify my comments.

Bringing those two articles together is in reality where stores need to be.

Nothing short of everything's enough.

In other words every method of education should be your goal.
Every method is valid and every method generates you income and loyalty from your customers.

Classes get you Workshop customers, Workshop customers get you field trip customers and offering all of these get you one on one customers.

All that needs to be decided is where do you put your emphasis, where do you get your best return overall, not just from the event itself.

Group Training
Training in numbers brings great profits

News from Peter deJanko

Hi Kathy

It has been a while since we had a chat, since we retired from Greensborough Photo and Video we have lost our contact with a lot of friends due to the fact that our old email address was cancelled by hotmail whilst we were overseas. Since I could not remember a password from the year dot and the European countries we were travelling appeared to be suspect we plus about 35 others on the trip lost all contact.

I was therefore disappointed to hear of David Downie sudden passing after the funeral. My new email address is as follows; okarina_12@hotmail.com

If you would be kind enough to include us in some relevant news we would be most appreciative, Could you please pass on our kind regards to Peter and all other staff who may remember us after 36 years in the industry.

Regards

Peter A deJanko
