What's News?

Maybe it was two weeks out of circulation on jury duty or simply, "things are happening":

Well known identity Brian D'arcy (ex Adeal MD) has started a new photo importing business; Maxxum Pty Ltd. based in Williamstown Vic. We wish you all the best Brian.

Whilst mentioning Adeal, Leica has announced they are opening direct in Australia. Understand many already know this.

Paul Rogers (ex Fuji), is now Business Development Director at Adrenalin Marketing Solutions. He will do well wherever he goes.

Stuart Poignand (known to many via Canon) has joined Bryn Sharp (ex Fuji and Kodak) as Marketing Director for Lyreco, a worldwide office supplies co. Bryn is MD.

Understand from my Canadian counterpart that Canon Canada is distributing Tamrac in Canada .. Interesting twist.

Congratulations again to Paul Dawson on selling his School Photo Business in Port Macquarie. He has "reengineered" his business on several occasions and deserves every success.

Friends of Ole Knudsen (and he had many in Australia), MD of Fotoknudsen Norway, were shocked to hear of their filing for bankruptcy on Feb 11. "This is the worst day in our 50 year history," said Ole Bjørn Knudsen, Managing Director in an interview with the local newspaper BA (Bergensavisen). Ole visited Australia on many occasions and is well known and respected worldwide amongst the lab community.

Wish you all the best Ole.

Kind Regards

Where are you sending your customers - by Glynn Lavender

What message are you sending your customers?

More importantly WHERE are you sending your customers?

Below is a text message from my wife about a recent shopping experience she ALMOST had.

"Sign of the times: Thought I'd treat myself to the new issue of MindFood magazine. I opened it to scan the contents page, and the inside front cover was an advertisement for the magazine (including bonus articles) for iPad.

Printed copy went back on shelf and a mental note made to download the app instead.

So right there they've lost the "impulse purchase" in store.

Remains to be seen if this customer follows through on the intention to purchase iPad version later.

But. If I do buy the iPad version, the chances are that I will keep updating the issue on my device more likely than buying the physical mag every month."

What struck me immediately was that this store just lost a sale. They lost any profit they could have made from the magazine simply because they were not aware that the product that they had on their shelves was actually just an advert asking the customer to shop somewhere else.

They not only lost this sale but they also lost any future sales. The publisher not only is trying to lure the customer away from the bricks and mortar store they are offering bonus content if you do.

But do you know what, the magazine publisher is also taking a big risk of losing the customer too.

When my wife gets home from shopping she gets home to attention demanding kiddos. Downloading a magazine is the last thing on her mind.

How does this relate to our industry?

Well you have to ask yourself are you sending your customers somewhere else?

Are you aware of everything you hand out to your customers that offers them another purchasing avenue?

What's inside the camera box? Any offers to join clubs? Get membership discounts etc?  Is that in fact sending your customers off to somewhere they may never return?

Do you actively remove these 'opposition adverts' from the boxes leaving your store?

More importantly do you put your own ones inside to draw them back to your store?

Getting new customers is expensive - keeping them requires vigilance.
