An interesting week at the 'office'

Over the last week I was called up for the first time to do Jury Duty. The trial itself looks set to go for at least ten days. The majority of my fellow Jurors are employed and their employers have an obligation to allow them to serve for the period of the trial.

Jury Duty is yet another, admittedly infrequent, challenge put forward to retailers.

What would you do if your number one staff member was locked up in Jury Duty for a month or more?

As reported below there is terrific news out of Port Macquarie where Paul Dawson has expanded his business boundaries and reaped the rewards.

There are business opportunities everywhere; however, finding the one that works for you is the challenge.

Well done Paul, thoroughly deserved!

Kind Regards

The New McCurry Ideas Exchange - by Glynn Lavender

The McCurry Ideas Exchange newsletter has a new home in PMA Newsline.

The first issue talks about Private Photo Lessons at Fort Worth Camera in the USA.

"Here's a dandy we learned about at the PRO meeting during PMA@CES. This will bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart.

Fort Worth Camera generated almost $30,000 in the fourth quarter of 2012 - a little more than half that sold in December - selling one-on-one classes (private tutoring if you'd prefer).

Read the rest of the article here.

Personally I think they are selling too cheap. If they are teaching more than just which buttons do what then they are missing BIG financial opportunities.

They state their resource (knowledgeable staff member) is finite so why tie him up one person at a time.

Lets say they run 6 one hour classes on a Saturday and everyone who attends pays the discounted rate of $45.80 per hour (after spiff removed from total).

Thats an income for the store of $274.80.  Take out staff wages, and other costs they are under $200 income for the day.

What if they ran the same amount of hours but ran it as a group Workshop.

Workshops always command more money than a class does. The hands on element is something people love and pay a premium for.

Let's say they ask $199 for the six hour day (still much cheaper than the $50 an hour the customers think they are paying) the income for the day is now nearly $1200.00

The labour resource stays the same but the income is significantly more.

Fort Worth Camera may have taken in $30,000 but how much profit did they really miss out on?

Big news from Port Macquarie - by Glynn Lavender

We love seeing positive, energetic, passionate young people in our industry pushing the boundaries and trying new challenges.

About a year ago Paul Dawson from Hydro Photographics was telling me about a new venture he was embarking on.

Working with Google to provide images for their new Business Photo Service. (I'll let Paul explain that in more detail soon)

A couple of days ago Paul reported to me that he has been awarded the "2012 Google Business Photo Trusted Photographer of the Year" award

What terrific news!

Here's all the details from Paul,

Many of you might ask...."What is Google Business Photos?"

Google Business Photos was launched early last year as a pilot program, featuring a 360-degree, interactive virtual tour, which is created with the use of Google's proprietary Street View Technology.

Also included with the service is a set of high-resolution still images, which appear along with the virtual tour on the customers Google+ Local business page.

Customers can now take a virtual tour, walk around, and explore businesses online form their home computers or on tablets and smart phones.

The virtual tour takes you throughout the business. Google Business Photos appears on Google Search, Google Maps, and Google+ Local.

The imagery is also available on mobile devices and the virtual tours are fully embeddable on any web page. Google products are designed to attract more customers by inviting them into a business to "See Inside".

Google Business Photos is the first on-demand, pay service of its kind offered by Google and is provide by local photographers that are specially trained and certified by Google. Since the official launch of Google Business Photos in January 2012, over 100,000 businesses worldwide have used the feature to virtually invite customers inside their doors.

With the use of high-quality panoramic imagery and Street View technology, businesses have been able to offer customers an interactive tour without physically setting foot inside - More information can be found here http://www.google.com.au/intl/en/help/maps/businessphotos/
