Following a call for nominations from all PMA members your Australian Executive for 2013 has now been finalised.
National Chairperson Phil Gresham State Chairpersons NSW Mark Alderson (also TVP,Territory Vice President) Vic. Jeff Crowley ( also TVP, Territory Vice president) Qld. Andrew Mason WA Murray Gibbs SA Paul Atkins (also TVP ,Territory Vice President) Tas. John Mullavey Sincere thanks, (on behalf of all members) to John Ralph and Tim Jones who are stepping down this year. John has been an outstanding contributor to the organisation over many years, giving his time and experience willingly and without reservation. Personally I will miss his counsel and sincerely hope he will continue as a PMA advocate. Similarly with Tim, who has been the face of PMA in Tassie over a number of years and has been instrumental in gaining the highest state participation rate in their activities (as a percentage of members in that state). To our new committee, many thanks for again stepping up in what are challenging times. Your participation and input on behalf of your State members is greatly valued .I am delighted to see Mark Alderson agreeing to fill the NSW role. I am sure his experience and close understanding of the Specialty channel will prove of benefit to all members. Equally John Mullavey in Tasmania will bring a fresh view to gaining new members in that State with his broad contacts . On behalf of Phil Gresham and The Executive Committee your support and input is greatly valued, so I would encourage all members to "engage"! These appointments will take effect from the Official business session at PMA@CES in Vegas next month.
Cheers
Peter Rose |

All smiles at the PMA NSW Christmas Party - by Kathy Warlum
Last Tuesday, 4th December, PMA NSW Members enjoyed a great meal and live music, while catching up with a few Industry colleagues at the PMA NSW Xmas Party at the "Red Room" in Sydney. It was pleasing to see large groups from Paxton's, Victor Jacobs' Photoland, and the Tran family, whose businesses include Broadway, Macarthur, Top Ryde and Hornsby Camera House, attend.
Lovely ladies, Pieta and Nicole from Grin and Bear It Photography travelled from the ACT to mingle and enjoy the festivities, as did Paul and Marg Boniface from Scone Instant Images.
During the brief formalities of the evening, Peter Rose thanked John Ralph for his service as PMA NSW Chairman and Eastern Region TVP - John has put many years (around 16 in total) as PMA NSW Chairperson and officiated over many NSW quarterly meetings. His contribution to PMA Australia and PMAI initiatives and programs have been invaluable, and his work with the Young Achievers and assistance in the development of the Future Leaders Program are a testament to his belief in sound retail training and education.
There were a good number of Wholesalers and Suppliers enjoying the evening also - Stuart Holmes and the IPS group as well as the CR Kennedy and Tasco guys were looking good, while Kirsty and Jennifer from Canon Australia added more glamour to the evening. Four piece band "Soul Shack", with the lead vocals from lovely Michelle, were excellent throughout the evening, and had the crowd dancing until late.
A great night was had by all, and only made possible by PMA's generous sponsors: Canon, CR Kennedy, IPS, Maxwell International, Nikon and Olympus Imaging - a big THANK YOU!

PMA QLD Xmas Party & Will Streets' Farewell Dinner - by Andrew Mason
Around 25 people from a cross section of the Queensland Photography Industry along with special guests from South Australia gathered for what was a great night at the Pig & Whistle Pub in Brisbane.
The food and wine flowed and during dinner we all recalled personal stories over the time we had known Will, some were very amusing and some were hilarious.
I am led to beleive it was well past midnight when the stragglers finally pulled up stumps leaving some of those with sore heads in the morning, which incidentally wasn't that far away.
Finally as Queennsland State Chairman I would like to thank all who attended with a special note of thanks to the two Pauls - Atkins & Gilbert for such an extremely well organised function.
And of course our guest of honour Will Street.

A letter from a customer - by Glynn Lavender
| |
I received the following letter this week from one of my customers.
What a great letter for retailers to really listen to and embrace.
A plea from an average customer, who has no more aspirations than to take nice photos of her grandkids.
What are you doing to ensure the Lynn's of this world return to your store?
If you say 'not enough' then it sounds like you have your New Year's Resolution sorted! (well that and the obligatory 'lose weight')
Dear Glynn,
I went to Apple to buy my ipad!!!!!!
Now there is a company that knows what it takes to sell more products.
Bought it, they asked if we had time......they sat me down, asked me to open the box (that's the most thrilling part for me , especially with a new camera) I think they recognised that that's part of the thrill, helped me to set it up all the time telling me what button to push, told me about a lot of the things I could do with it (in the nicest possible way) asked me if I wanted the 'guide' as one of the apps on the screen (great thinking), set up the internet side of things with me, 3 different staff all experts in their field.
I think that's what Photographic stores should be doing!
Apple mentioned the classes they run and how to book in.......took about an hour and I came out of there able to use that ipad as soon as I got home.
Now that is a model all camera stores should use. So easy and I will go back and back and back again because they did what you do, they made me feel like I could do it.
I know that Joe Blogs the small camera store would have difficulty providing that sort of time, but if they were to band together with someone who could go through all of that with them they would have so many more enthusiasts in the long run.
Apple have it down to a fine art and they were not huge when they bought out their first iphone.........bigger than some but not the company they are now.
Just wanted to share that.....Lynn xx

Six Fast & Proven Retail Selling Techniques for the Holidays - David Goodwin
It's not too late to put these selling techniques into place to maximise your sales and add on sales this Christmas.
Tip # 1: Ask the Question "Who Else is On Your List?" - Everyone needs to shop for multiple people and they hate the hassle of running from store-to-store or searching the web. If you can suggest an item that saves them time and hassle they will reward you!
Tip # 2: Have Impulse Items Near the Counter - Many customers have to purchase low-cost items for their postal worker, paper carrier, or other service provider. In many cases they also want to be "fair" by spending the same amount of money on their children. Low cost impulse items of $5, $10, and $20 solve these needs!
Tip # 3: Offer Complete Solutions - Nothing is worse than receiving a toy that needs batteries and - you've got it - not having the batteries. The same goes with other products as well (shoes/socks, printers/paper, beds/pillows). Solve this problem by adding on things that make the product work, make the product work better, or protect the product in the long term. You might even want to consider creating product bundles!
Tip # 4: Use the "Pretty Picture" Technique - Your customers like to give gifts because it makes them feel good about themselves and helping others. Reinforce this feeling by saying something like "Can't you just imagine the look on your daughter's face when she opens this gift?"
Tip # 5: Use the "S.W.A.T." method - You are guaranteed to sell out of some items. Instead of worrying about what you don't have, just "Sell What's Available Today." All of your products are great and desireable...afterall you wouldn't stock them if they weren't!
Tip #6: Sell to the Shopper - Did you know that 15% of all "gift" purchases are actually purchased by the shopper for themselves? Give your top-line a boost by asking your customer if they wouldn't like to get involved with something for themselves as well!
