Camera House Vibe Was "All Good".

Paul Shearer, The CHA Board and CHA members should be well pleased with the progress and outcomes from the  AGM held in Manly NSW this last weekend.

Firstly the trade afternoon was well attended on Friday with all suppliers being kept busy. PMA was there promoting the Educational Workshops scheduled for early 2013.

On the Saturday over 110 members and suppliers were briefed on progress and significant changes to the CHA "on line trading" arrangements ,which were universally endorsed by attending members.
Mark Alderson and Allan Corder both emphasised the need for their organisation to actively embrace the changes, which were forecasted to lead to 25% of future business being done via the web.

Major progress was also reported in their  adoption of  a companywide POS system, which obviously adds significant benefits.

The need for consumer education was another highlight, and plans are in place to allow members across Australia to hold regional training events.

Whilst Sundays  agenda was "for Members only" we understand the enthusiastic adoption of the Promaster range of product indicates another major step forward in benefits available to CHA members.

I am sure all PMA members would endorse the prestigious "Supplier of the Year " award going to Olympus and Marc Radatt at the black tie dinner on Saturday night.

Well done Camera House and the team at Raleru!!

Kind Regards,

Peter Rose

Jeff Crowley Rides Around the Bay

Hi Everyone,

I did it!  On Sunday I completed the 20th Bupa Around the Bay bike ride in support of disadvantaged Aussie kids.

I hope you were thinking of me on Sunday as you were enjoying a nice sleep in, or sipping on your latte over brunch! It was a great day.

The ride was tough, but certainly worth the effort to raise money to help disadvantaged Aussie kids. A big THANK YOU to all my wonderful sponsors.

Your support has helped me raise $1055 to change the lives of disadvantaged Aussie kids. I really appreciate your sponsorship and it was your generosity that kept me pedalling to the finish line, so thank you!

Right now, 1 in 10 Aussie kids are living in disadvantage.

Your amazing support will help The Smith Family continue their work to break the cycle of disadvantage and help these kids create better futures for themselves.

If you haven't yet sponsored me, there's still time!

Simply click on the link below to view my fundraising page and make your donation to support my ride:

It will only take a few minutes and a tax deductible receipt will be emailed to you right away!

Thanks again for your support - it is truly appreciated.

How much is an experience worth? - by Glynn Lavender

I know I bang on a lot about the photo industry not providing enough 'sellable' experiences to their customers, the fact that my day to day existence depends upon providing such experiences gives me proof of not only their profitability but the hunger people have for knowledge and just plain FUN with their cameras.

It got me to thinking about how many different ways people spend money on experiences and how many different opportunities that are not being tapped into by our industry.

First lets look at some odd ways people spend money to have an experience.

I am sure it is something that has been happening for a while but just the other day I noticed an iPhone app for a slot machine game. It is just like a real 'pokie' machine but you play for fake money.

The weird thing?

People PAY MONEY to buy fake credits to win fake money.

I've heard people pay good money to jump out of perfectly sound planes - ones that aren't even on fire!

Swimming with sharks seems to attract its share of people willing to fork over hundreds of dollars for a chance to be on the menu at the local 'Humans and Chips' Store.

And of course let's not forget those folk who flock to NZ to tie a rubber band around their feet and see what it feels like to be a yo-yo.

Yup there is no shortage of people wanting to spend their money.

So what can we sell?

How about balloon photo tours - aerial photography lends itself to dramatic shots with interesting perspectives. All you need do is help them with composition and point out interesting objects.

Make a deal with a local ballooning company. They'd love to have you driving business for them.

Swimming with dolphins.

Provide a bunch of 'tough' cameras and take groups out with a local charter.

Once again the 'work' is pretty easy, the rewards are great and who knows they may flock to your store to buy the cameras afterwards too.

V8 'Hot Laps' - People love going really fast in cars. Whilst you may not have the driving skills you have the ability to shoot them WITH the car (probably best BEFORE they get thrown around in 6G conditions) and provide them with a fantastic lifelong momento of their experience.

In all these examples the companies running them would love you to drive business to them.

What events and experiences are happening in your area that you can tap in to?

This last weekend I ran an experience for my customers.

I rented out an old movie set, put on some accommodation and food and a few models and set a price of $849.00 a head for the weekend.

Maximum numbers allowed -18

Time to sell out - 72 hours

Was it fun?

You betcha.

Do I have more people lining up to do it again?

You betcha.

Did I make money?

You BETCHA!

Did it drive gear sales for retailers?

Oh you better believe it!

This was not a weekend of training. Just a weekend for people to experience something they would not normally be able to do in a fun and friendly way.

Were they willing to pay for that experience - oh yes indeed.

How can you tap in to the experience market?

How to increase your average sale  - by Chris Wilkinson of First Retail

Ever wondered just how much more you could get from your existing customer base?

It's easy by simply focusing on boosting the average sale value in every transaction.

Measuring this key performance indicator is the fastest way to both grow revenue and build staff engagement.

Retailers the world over use average sale as the measure to determine skill but there's much more to achieving sustained growth and benefit to the business.

Achieving high average sales doesn't just come from having great ability or confidence.

Retailers need to have the right product, merchandising and promotions to back up the strategy.

Making sure your store is ready for the challenge is a great way to give the business a fast track marketing makeover. It starts with having products that make ideal add-ons.

From small photo gifts, through to frames, albums, cameras and lenses.

Be sure to have complementary ranges to suit your main categories at all price points.

If you create the right environment add-on sales can happen automatically.

Impulse merchandising near photo kiosks or on the counter is a great prompt for customers to recognize opportunity and make the purchasing decision themselves.

Grouping products that go together is another sure-fire way to drive multiple sales and lift your averages.

Frames near the enlargement display and bags next to cameras are good examples. While these may seem logical they're often missed by even the smartest retailers.

Small sales plague photo shops. One and two print orders lower a store's average sale, but provide real opportunity to up-sell with the right promotions.

Package deals remove the emphasis on individual pricing - enabling retailers to bundle product within manageable price breaks.

Using prints and enlargements or prints and photo gifts you can achieve combo offers - similar to those used by fast food restaurants.

Another powerful way to lift sales is through one-to-one promotion.

Here staff has a range of discretionary promotions they can offer customers individually. This works well for photo shops, as it can become part of the kiosk or camera demonstration.

Two for one enlargements or a free big print with qualifying volume is often just enough to grow what may have initially been a small order.

The quest to achieve added value sales doesn't need to end when customers leave your store.

Consider offering gift-wrapping services in your online offer, or up selling every print order with an image enhancement option.

Simple strategies work.

Set yourself the challenge to lift every sale this way and look forward a much healthier balance sheet.
