PPFA looks to preserve Australia's cultural heritage.

Congratulations to the PPFA for this terrific initiative!

PPFA Australia is moving closer to working with the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM) in providing a combined service to preserving movable cultural heritage in private ownership.

More movable cultural heritage exists in the private domain than all the nation's major collections houses ie museums, galleries, etc combined, yet very little attention is given to preserving this valuable resource by Federal and State governments.

This task is left to individual associations such as the PPFA working with other professionals in the field such as AICCM.

PPFA has been instrumental in creating the Cultural Heritage Preservation Foundation (www.culturalheritage.net.au).

However, if individual members of society are to take action to preserve the heritage in their possession, associations such as PPFA must provide the resources to preserve heritage when owners are seeking help.

In order to develop a large base of qualified preservation picture framers, PPFA has moved to encourage many in the framing industry to obtain the required qualifications.  In a small way to achieve this objective, Quentin Webster (MCPF®) and Cathy Webster (CPF®) in Canberra have been running fortnightly classes to framers interested in improving the knowledge of preservation framing and sitting the CPF exam later in the year.

At no cost to the class attendees, the classes have focussed on topics essential to CPF exam requirements.

To date five workshops have been completed with preservation framing of objects is still to be covered before moving onto classes on CPF exam preparation.

Hopefully these classes will lead to more framers with appropriate preservation framing qualifications to enable PPFA to meet some of its commitments when serving Australian society in preserving movable cultural heritage.

Chris March retires!

Hi Peter

Just thought I'd advise you that Chris March who is currently State Manager  - Queensland for CR Kennedy  and commenced work with them on the 24th July 1978 retires today.

A small informal get together, which also included Kristian Bentleys 40th birthday, was held at the famous Breaky Creek Spanish Gardens on Monday 27th August.

Chris has been a major part of CRK Qld and as he said has had a fabulous time in the photographic trade travelling Queensland from well before the mobile office and digital.

Has thoroughly enjoyed the people both customers and the competitors in his territory .

Now plans to travel, play music and look after his lovely wife Kathy who will continue to work so he can enjoy life!

Couple of pics attached early trade show etc.

Cheers
Bryan

Sony's Mike Kahn to represent manufacturers as first ever Special Advisor to PMA Board

PMA Australia has always had a close working relationship with manufacturers and suppliers when it comes to working on the future direction of our industry. It is tremendous to see the US market working towards a closer relationship.

Mike Kahn, director of Alpha Camera Systems for Sony Electronics, has been appointed the first ever Special Advisor to the PMA Executive Committee.

In this role, Kahn will take part in bi-monthly calls and face-to-face meetings with the PMA Executive Committee, to represent photo and imaging manufacturers.

"Appointing Mike to this role is another way PMA is fulfilling its new mission statement, which is to 'promote the growth of the imaging industry," said PMA President Allen Showalter. "PMA is actively seeking new avenues to provide the support and opportunities needed to help the imaging industry thrive and grow now, and in the future.

The voices of photo and imaging manufacturers are critically important to achieving this goal - and PMA is listening to them. We are excited to be working with Mike to make a direct connection between the PMA board and photo manufacturers."

Kahn is vice president of the Photoimaging Manufacturers and Distributors Association (PMDA), and is on the Board of Directors for CEA's Digital Imaging Group.

He is a 22-year veteran of the consumer electronics industry, and has been with Sony for 16 years.

In his current role as Director of the Alpha Camera Systems division at Sony, Kahn is responsible for all aspects of the business unit, including sales, marketing, and product development for the U.S. marketplace.
