Congratulations AIPP on The Nikon 2012 Event

Peter Myers and his team are to be congratulated for the successful conference and equipment expo (which is still under way), being  held in NSW, at the Cypress Resort in the Hunter Valley.

Over 500 photographers registered for The Nikon Event.

The conference program was outstanding, with a mixture of overseas and local presenters who filled a program over four days. Up to four rooms were used to allow concurrent presentations.

The equipment expo was well designed, with attendee  access encouraged during lunch, morning and afternoon tea breaks.

It was good to see that professionals were willing to pay $1300 for full registration (including accommodation). It again proves that a quality program at an excellent venue will be well supported.

Well done AIPP.

Kind Regards

Peter Rose

TEAM FUJIFILM: Hands Across the Water Charity Ride (Jan 2013)

A year has nearly passed since fundraising begun for Hands Across The Water charity ride 2012.

Last year's fundraising was outstanding and we really made a difference raising $72,000.

In January 2013 Team FUJIFILM will participate in not one but two 800 kilometre bicycle rides .  In MID January, Karon Handy and I will again ride from Bangkok to Khao Lak and then on to the home of the kids at Baan Tharn Namchai Orphanage.  2 weeks earlier, Amy Lindsay will ride from Nong Khai to Yasothon in the North to a recently added Orphanage, managing over

100 amazing kids with HIV issues.   Both rides will be covered in eight

days, with one rest day in the middle.

The Charity "Hands Across the Water" started after the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami in Thailand, which Orphaned many young children, who ended up living on the beach.

Then, Peter Baines, an amazing ex Forensic Police Specialist from Australia, started a Charity to house, educate and grow these children into a loving and caring community.

EVERY dollar raised in this charity ends up without a cent going to Administration, so it is unique.

This year we have set out fundraising target higher...... we hope to reach $100,000 in donations for Hands Across The Water.

Any donation will be appreciated and will help these kids in need.

Your donation can be made via the below website.  If you click on the link and look for Dave Marshall, Amy Lindsay or Karon Handy you will then be able to donate via visa or mastercard.

The End Of An Era

Winters Camera Centre Burnie Closes

It is with mixed emotions that I have made a decision to retire at the end of September. This has not been an easy decision but one where I have put commonsense ahead of sentiment. I wish to do a lot more travelling, playing golf, fishing, my artwork and all the other things you do in retirement whilst I am young enough or more importantly fit enough to enjoy it.

I have decided to close the store rather than sell and our last trading day will be 29th September 2012. The store will have been trading for 103 years 1 month and 9 days and as stated is the end of an era for Australia's Oldest Camera Store which was started by my grandfather on August 20th 1909.

I will continue trading with our mining division where we sell Rear Vision System Cameras and Monitors to the mining and heavy industry sectors, this will be done from a new location.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my 46 years in the industry and feel privileged to have met so many fantastic people and suppliers. I consider myself lucky to have experienced the transition of the industry over those years and have worked with plate cameras, contact printers with dish processing right through to the digital world of today. Our company have always been the first to adopt the changes in our industry and have kept up with the latest technology available.

There is no secret to success in business, it is about having well trained and presented staff who provide an exceptional service to customers and the store offering what customers want. I am indebted to our fabulous staff who have supported us over the many years.

I would like to thank you sincerely for your support over the years and who knows, we may catch up down the track in the next chapter of our life.

Sincerely and best  regards

Colin Winter

For all of us who have been in the industry for some time, Winters was an established part of the Tassie photo market. They were early adopters of new technology, and developed a 'balanced" business that included white goods and consumer electronics as well as a strong b to b business with their cameras for the mining industry.

But apart from that, Colin was always a gentleman to deal with, and prided himself on his team, and their importance to his business. He was also willing to share ideas and assist in the development of the marketing groups he was part of.

You and your organisation will be missed Colin!!

Best wishes

Peter Rose

Another Era Ends

Industry stalwart and long-time PMA member, Harvey Gordon, closed his last shop in Manly at the end of July.

For many years Photoworld on Manly Corso was a landmark, catering for the thousands of tourists as well as his regular clientel.Harvey freely gave of his time on the PMA NSW committee and was  a key part (together with Terry Rimmer and John Rule) of the Industries initiatives in working with DFAT to produce a meaningful set of guidelines for passport photos which are still in use today.

Manly and the Industry will miss you Harvey!

PS He may have called it a day in the photo industry, however Harvey is enjoying his new "front of house" role at The Sydney Maritime Museum.

If you would like contact details please let PMA know.

Terry Rimmer looks back on his association with Harvey

"Harvey contributed to a number of PMA initiatives, which included the DFAT passport photo changes, and also served as PMA Territorial Vice President.

Never afraid to take a view and always had something to say about the issues and challenges PMA may have been facing, Harvey deserves his "new life" to be enjoyable and fulfilling.

I join the many other "old industry colleagues" in wishing Harvey all the best.

Rise Of The Amateur Report Released

JACKSON, Mich. - Advanced amateur photographers - those for whom photography is a hobby, an art and a passion, rather than merely a means of preserving memories - have become a sweet spot in the imaging market.

The new Rise of the Amateur Report - 2011 Edition, just released by PMA, the Worldwide Community of Imaging Associations, takes an in-depth look at the imaging behaviors and technology use of these photo enthusiasts. The study reveals what advanced amateur photographers are looking for in cameras, accessories, photo services, social networks, TV photo viewing, and photo printing.

"The Rise of the Amateur report represents another way PMA is fulfilling our new mission statement, which is 'to promote the growth of the imaging industry,'" said PMA Executive Director Jim Esp. "The report identifies areas where the greatest opportunities lie for photo retailers and suppliers."

Now in its third year, the new Rise of the Amateur Report shows nearly 80 percent of advanced amateurs take pictures at least weekly, and 17.3% plan to purchase a mirrorless camera in the next year. Further, 71% have purchased two or more photobooks in the past year.

Among all respondents, the most common use of a retail or online service is to make 8-by-10-inch or larger photo prints (40.3 percent), followed by photo books (22.6 percent) and photo cards/stationery (13.4 percent). A slightly larger number of respondents (16.4 percent) said they printed photo cards/stationery at home in the past 12 months; but far fewer (6.1 percent) produced a photo book on their own.

Photo enthusiasts largely remain dedicated to their compact cameras, despite the proliferation of camera phones. Only 7.8 percent of males and 8.5 percent of females have switched entirely to taking pictures with a mobile device.

In addition, the vast majority of respondents (84 percent of males and 77.4 percent of females) own a digital SLR.

The Rise of the Amateur Report - 2011 Edition is available now to PMA members for US $299. Non-members can purchase the report for US $499. It is available through the PMA Store or just click here
