Dear Patients,
I am writing to ask your help with The Shade Project, a non-profit my wife and I founded in 2012 which is dedicated to preventing skin cancer. Every day in my practice, I see more and more skin cancer occurring in ever younger patients. Education is key to reducing the incidence but that often isn't enough.
Prevention, early detection and treatment saves lives. Building shade at schools and playgrounds is prevention that lasts.
Building more shade is a powerful tool in combating the over 3.5 million cases of skin cancer diagnosed annually in the US. Travis County has the unfortunate distinction of having higher rates of malignant melanoma and deaths from melanoma than other Texas counties. Shade on school campuses and education on sun safety change behaviors. These individual changes are key step in the prevention of skin cancer.
