Dear High Country Bank Customers,

HIGH COUNTRY BANK ENCOURAGES PARENTS TO TEACH KIDS ABOUT FINANCE

The summer months mean many kids in America are working for some extra cash in their pockets. Whether they are doing odd jobs around the house or working at the local pool, it's the perfect time to teach your child financial lessons that will last a lifetime.

"It's never too early to begin teaching children the basics of finance," said Jodi Baldwin, Vice-President of Operations at High Country Bank.  "We encourage parents to expose their children to experiences like visiting the bank, budgeting, and paying bills."

High Country Bank invites youngsters of all ages, into our bank for tours, experiential opportunities (shadowing), and internships.  Besides bringing our youth in to the bank setting, we also enjoy going into the classroom and sharing our expertise.

We are proud to have employees working for our financial institution that were born and raised in our communities.  Being able to offer our locals post-college opportunities in rural areas allows our youth to come back to a place that they call "home".

High Country Bank offers these examples of teachable moments:
  • At the bank. When you come to the bank, bring your children with you and show them how transactions work. Get the manager to explain how the bank operates, how money generates interest and how an ATM works.
  • On payday. Discuss how your pay is budgeted to pay for housing, food and clothing, and how a portion is saved for future expenses such as college tuition and retirement.
  • At the grocery store. Explain the benefits of comparison shopping, coupons and store brands.
  • Paying bills. Explain the many ways that bills can be paid: over the phone, electronically (with credit/debit), auto-pay, paper or by check, electronic check or online check draft. Discuss how each method of bill pay takes money out of your account. Be sure to cover late penalties, emphasizing the importance of paying bills on time.
  • Using credit cards. Explain that credit cards are loans and need to be repaid. Share how each month a credit card statement comes in the mail with a bill. Go over the features of different types of cards, such as ATM, debit and credit cards.

Salida Museum

High Country Bank is proud of their partnership with the Salida Museum!   It was brought to HCB's attention that last summer, a conservation expert toured the Museum and noted UV damage to artifacts, including a rare lithograph of Custer's Last Rally. Their light fixtures were giving off too much UV. Paint, fabric, photographs and paper were especially susceptible to damage. HCB offered a $2500 match to the Salida Museum, and in just  a month's time, the museum met their goal!!!!  It is with gratitude that HCB donates to this cause, as this special museum ensures that our county's history stays in tact.  We appreciate  the hard work of all the volunteers at the Salida Museum.

Fair and Rodeo

High Country Bank was also pleased to be a sponsor of the 29th annual, Chaffee County Fair and Rodeo.

Women's Golf

We are happy to have made donations this past month to Mountain Vibes Camp and the Salida Women's Golf Association.
