 The Christmas List

"They will call Him Immanuel-which means, 'God with us.'" Matthew 1:22

Over the past month, I began consulting with a leadership coach.  Coming upon  Thanksgiving, I made a list and created extra time to meet with God to thank Him for His goodness over the year.  But when I met with the coach and reviewed my goals for 2015,  I found myself feeling great pressure to accomplish much, when all of a sudden, the coach stopped me short of my frenzied antics.

He asked me several poignant questions:  1)  What would happen if you just stopped and did nothing?  (my answer:  horror of horrors!  sounds awful!)  2) What would happen if you listed everything that God has done for BLM over the past four years, since you went full time with the ministry? (wow...look back over all those years?) 3) How about finding out why YOU think you can move the ministry, when God is driving the bus? (ouch ... I seemed to have forgotten this!)

As I sat in the big old green chair, covered up with Grandma's old quilt, and sipped my hot cider, I began to realize something crucial about this life I was living ... At 52, I feel like this is my favorite part of my life ... ever ... and yet I pressure myself and the ministry to succeed, to press farther, to do more.  Where was this coming from?  I realized that I had a need for control.

I went back through the painful circumstances that my children and I went through some fifteen Christmases ago and watched how God lifted us out.  I saw how God provided, how He never left us, how He delivered, redeemed, restored, and renewed us.  It wasn't overnight ... but it happened slowly.

In one week, my middle daughter, Chandra, (the premise of the ministry) will be graduating and beginning her career as a Doctor of Chiropractics.  Jenessa has fulfilled her dream to become an art teacher and a mother, and Alexis continually fulfills her dreams of utilizing her photography skills to serve our ministry.

Looking solely at our ministry, we had the most conferences this year, we published two magazines, and three of our speakers are now authors.  Many women have prayed to accept Christ, we prayed with hundreds, and we have developed deep relationships encouraging others to draw close to God.

As I wrote my list and reviewed all of this goodness of God, it made me not just thankful, but rather, awe struck.

In this lovely month of December, we relish in our traditions and our memories. But what we forget is that God is in control ... we don't have to fight Him for the wheel.

And when we remember this, we can be awe struck over His goodness.  After all, He sent a baby to a manger ... He lifted us out of sin, provided a Savior, became Immanuel, delivered His people, redeemed their souls, restored their hope, and renewed our lives with salvation.

How's that for a thankful list?

Happy December ... and Merry Christmas!  Come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

An Old-Fashioned Christmas Drama

Several years ago, BLM had the wonderful opportunity to take our Christmas drama to a radio format!  It was aired on a local radio station and hundreds enjoyed the comedy and creativity that led to the beautiful Christmas message that our drama team and our friend and producer, Garth Hjelte.

This month, we will be airing the 3 parts of our story each week before Christmas, so you and your family can gather around the computer and tune in for what happens in this story.

As I prayed about it and began to write and create the script, as usual I saw how God used the talents of the  Bakkers and Traci Cox, along with Garth's brilliant mind, to develop something that was reminiscent of what my parents listened to on the radio as children.

I thought it was time to bring drama back, use our imaginations, and visit the Christmas story from a different angle.  Tune in to this link to give a listen to Part I!

Ask Dr. Deb

Dr. Deb

Question:  This is the season (right before the holidays) where I always seem to get sick.  What steps can I take to try to prevent getting a cold or flu?

Dr. Deb: The beauty, joy, and busy pace of the Christmas season are upon us. It seems that the hustle and bustle of this time of year often wear us down and negatively impact our health. Here are a few helpful hints to remain healthy over the holidays.

1. Wash your hands. And when you don't have ready access to a sink, use hand disinfectant. Both can help prevent the spread of the many respiratory viruses that are common during the winter months.

2. Don't overeat. Yes ... there are so many goodies that we only see once a year... however, moderation will keep you feeling better

3. Get enough rest. There are never enough hours in the day, especially during the busy holiday season. Listen to your body... rest and healthy habits are more important than a perfect tree or perfect cookies or perfect gift-wrapping.

4. Consider taking Vitamin C and Vitamin D over the winter months. Most of us live far enough north that our daily dose of vitamin D is sorely lacking over the winter months. Vitamin C can also help he immune system. Speak to your health care provider about what daily doses would be best for your health.

5. Remember the "reason for the season."  Christmas celebrates the birth of our precious Lord and Savior, Jesus. Simplifying your holiday in order to keep the focus on Jesus can be liberating. As we remember His birth with humble, thankful hearts, we are reminded that Jesus paid it all ... no amount of rushing around on our part changes anything ... so why not take time to rest at Jesus feet?

sausage , cooked, drained
1/2 cup ham or turkey ham ,
1/2"cubes, optional
1 cup mushrooms, thinly sliced

Second Layer:

9 large eggs, whipped
2 1/4 cups milk
3/4 teaspoon dry mustard
3/4 teaspoon granulated garlic
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 cup salsa

Third Layer:
1 (15 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup milk

1/3 cup co-jack cheese, shredded

Preparation Time: 30 minutes

Start to Finish Time: 1 hour 45 minutes

Preheat oven to 350° F.

First Layer: Cube bagels/bread and layer 1/2 of it in a 9 x 13 pan lightly greased. Layer 1/2 of cheese, meat and mushrooms. Add remaining bagel/bread cubes and top with

remaining cheese, meat and mushrooms.

Second Layer: In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the eggs until frothy (about 5-7 minutes on high). Add the milk, mustard, garlic, pepper and salsa and beat on low for just to incorporate ingredients. Pour over the top of the bagel/cheese/meat mixture slowly working your way around the pan to moisten the entire top.

Third Layer: In a small bowl combine the soup and 1/2 cup milk.Spread over the top, evenly. Sprinkle with 1/3 cup cheese. Cover and refrigerate over night if desired or wait 15 minutes for bread to absorb liquid. Bake in preheated oven at 350° F uncovered for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes or until lightly browned, raised, and knife

comes out clean in the center. Allow to rest 5 minutes before serving.

Cherry Cream Cheese Coffee Cake

1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese (can use reduced fat), softened
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1 egg, separated

1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2 (8 oz.) cans each refrigerated crescent rolls (can use reduced fat)
1 cup cherry pie filling

Powdered Sugar Glaze (powdered sugar, milk, almond extract), optional

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat the cream cheese, sugar, egg yolk and extract together until smooth.  Remove the rolls from cans. Save 4 pieces of dough and arrange the other 12 pieces on a 15" diameter pan (I use my stone) with the long points in the center. (The pieces will hang over the edge of the stone) Push the dough together to cover the stone, leaving the center open. Fold up the center tips of dough to leave a hole in the middle and "roll" up the edges evenly around the outer area of the stone to form an edge. Flour the dough very lightly if your fingers or roller sticks to it.

Spread the cream cheese mixture over the dough. Top with pie filling. On a small lightly floured cutting board, press perforations on saved dough and cut lengthwise into 8 strips. Twist each strip and lay over filling like spokes on a wheel. Fold dough over spokes or tuck spokes under outer and inner edges. Brush dough with beaten egg white if desired.
Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and cool on a rack. Drizzle with glaze if desired. Serve warm or room temperature.

This month's HIT PICK LIST:  Mindy Smith's Christmas Music and
 BLM's Exclusive Interview with Mindy!

What's Playing at My House For Christmas?

By Executive Director, Kathy A. Weckwerth

With Christmas right around the corner, I have pulled out my favorite cds, including Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Amy Grant, the Carpenters, and my best loved CD for enjoying a steaming hot cup of coffee while warming up by the fire ... Mindy Smith's "My Holiday" and "Snowed In."

Over the past couple of years, Mindy, one of my all-time-favorite female artists produced 2 Christmas CDs, I was shoving and pushing past the crowds to snag them!  Mindy once again uses her incredible gift of writing lyrics and brings a fresh twist on classic Christmas themes.  She utilizes her amazingly distinctive voice to bring a sweet comfort that ignites the spirit with Christmas cheer.

My favorite songs on the "My Holiday" CD include original tunes, "My Holiday" and "I Know the Reason," while I certainly enjoy the classic grooves of "Silver Bells" and "I'll Be Home For Christmas."   On her "Snowed In" CD, I love "Tomorrow Is Christmas Day."

This month, we have the honor of asking Mindy Smith a couple of questions about her Christmas music.

BLM:  What was your inspiration to create your holiday CDs?

MS: I have always enjoyed Christmas music.  It seems though, that most holiday albums are just the same old songs with very few original arrangements let alone originals tunes.  Like everyone else, I enjoy the familiar songs of my youth because they evoke special memories.  I believe that those of us who are songwriters and musicians have a responsibility to replenish the music well, not always taking from it but also adding to it.  The reward (and hope) is that, maybe someone, somewhere, will be reminded of  a special person, place, or time in their own lives and look fondly on the memory associated with the song in the future.  The classics started out new and fresh then just took on a life of their own.  How cool is that?

BLM:  Growing up, did you have favorite Christmas music that you listened to each year?

MS:  Yes,  their are many albums that my Christmas would feel empty without today.  John Denver and The Muppets, Bing Crosby, Amy Grant's "Tennessee Christmas", The Carpenters, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Mathis, and more. They are all neatly tucked into my catalog of Christmas music and most of them I still listen to on vinyl.

BLM:  What is your favorite Christmas tradition?

MS:  Mommy's homemade sticky buns and rolls were a highlight.  Gift giving, even though I do it all year round, I enjoy finding special things for the people I love.  Of late, the annual holiday puppy portrait.

BLM:  What was your inspiration behind the lovely song, "I Know the Reason" on your "My Holiday" CD?

MS:   I think the sentiment is that, if you have someone you love in your life and recognize it, then that in and of itself is a gift, and so the joy of the holiday season is with you all year round.

BLM:  And finally, everyone wants to know ... where did you get the amazing vintage dresses on the cover of your CD?

MS: Ha, that dress was "borrowed!"  My stylist was Shannan Shephard at the time and found some great pieces.  I believe she found it at a local vintage clothing store called, Katy K Designs on 12th Ave South, here in Nashville.

Top 10 Preparations for a Peace-filled Christmas

Sometimes in the busyness of the season, we become frantic trying to grasp what we believe is "the perfect" Christmas eve.  For years, people have tried to dictate the perfect gifts to give, the perfect Christmas card to create, the perfect cookies to bake, and the perfect meal to make.  We've tried it all and here's what the staff at BLM knows ... the only perfect thing about Christmas is the Christ child!

This year, join us as we work on feeling grateful, thankful, calm, and at peace with our lives, our family, our friends, our jobs, and our world.  After all, peace starts with us.  This Christmas, make things simple:

1.  Set your table AHEAD of time.  Leave the place settings out so things look festive but you're ready to go!

2.  Make yourself go to bed at a decent time each night.

3.  Get your tree set up early and enjoy it every single day!  The season is short.

4.  Put Christmas CDs in your car and your CD player.

5.  Check out local TV listings like Hallmark's channels and UP TV for good-feeling movies.  Many of them have the true Christmas message!

6.  Mark your calendar for fun events but don't overbook.

7.  Bake an extra batch of cookies and find needy people (grandmas and grandpas who don't bake, college kids at the dorm, singles, etc) and deliver happiness.

8.  Buy presents for only people on your list.  Make sure you DON'T go overboard, even though you're tempted to do so.

9.  Spend time reading the Christmas story from Luke 2 and Matthew 1.

10.  Wrap presents as you purchase them.  Mark securely with tag.

The season isn't meant for perfection, it's meant for remembering the only one who is perfect.  Enjoy it ... savor the moments with family and friends ... and start 2015 out on track!  Merry CHRISTmas!

We are thankful for
Frank Lake Covenant Church in the Grove

Your Best Life ChristmasFor 112 years, Frank Lake Covenant Church stood tall and strong, overlooking the nearby fields and waters of Frank Lake.

Two years ago, this August, it was lifted up and moved 20 miles down the road to our grove here on Hwy 29 outside of Benson, MN.

We rejoice, and we celebrate that God has blessed Dean and I, and our ministry, Best Life, with such a wonderful representation of God's goodness, His great work, and His dealings in our everyday lives.
