 The Value of Being Thankful

By: Executive Director, Kathy A. Weckwerth

Exec. Dir, Kathy Weckwerth

It's that time of year where once again, everything is changing. The leaves have turned to golden hues of yellow, red, and brown, and have been falling steadily from the trees.  The plants have been brought into the garage, the pumpkins have been gently set on the outdoor steps, and the special brown dishes are being pulled out from the corner cupboard, getting washed for the family's upcoming Thanksgiving dinner.

Every year, as the autumn month blows in ever so gently, I am in awe of the beauty of God's earth.  I am reminded once again that there is nothing more beautiful than living in the Midwest, where seasons vary and colors are vibrant.

Today, I am thankful.  Today, I am grateful for many things. As I look out my living room window,  I am thankful for the little church that sits in the grove, the wonderful farmer-husband I have who is out in the combine in the field behind our house, my 3 little grandchildren who have been playing on the living room floor, the 3 beautiful daughters who call me incessantly, and my 83 year old mother who never seems to tire of my "how do I cook this?" questions.

Looking back over the past year, I am grateful for my Best Life team and how they enthusiastically seek God and serve others.  I am thankful for my Bible study friends who show up each week to learn more about God.  I am thankful for the people who never give up on me and always look for the best in me.

But more than anything else, I am thankful for God.  I am thankful that He sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins, and that He loves us more than we can comprehend.

Tomorrow morning, when you open your eyes to a new day, take some time to really thank God for each and every blessing He's given you.  Start with the fact that you're alive, thank Him that you can see, smell, hear, and touch, and with every experience you walk through during your day, thank Him.

An attitude of gratitude is what makes people set apart ... different ... special.  Let's don that attitude and be the people who live with a thankful heart, a grateful spirit, a tenacious optimism.  Let's be thankful and grateful.

From Farmer Dean, Me, and all of our family to yours ...

Happy thanksgiving!

A Spirit of Thankfulness

By:  Pastor Bev Modlin

Thanksgiving is a choice we make and that choice has far more to do with the reality inside of us than with the reality around us.

I heard of a story where after a young girl's birthday celebration, her mother began to constantly remind that 12-year-old daughter to write her thank you notes.  When the girl finally sat down to do her duty, she began with her aunt who lived out of state.

The aunt had sent her a ceramic doll, a nice gift, but not on the request list of many 12 year olds.  "Dear Aunt Mae, thank you for the ceramic doll. It's just what I always wanted, but not very much!"  As the mother read what her daughter wrote, she thought,

you can make someone write a "thank you" note, but you cannot make them be truly thankful and grateful.

Again and again, the Apostle Paul (in his joyful, thanksgiving and gratitude-filled letters) tells us to not just simply say Rejoice in the Lord always, but say Thanks be to God, and sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.  And Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.  From all appearances, Paul's gratitude was in spite of, rather than because of, his circumstances.

Paul's life wasn't easy. He had been criticized, betrayed, attacked, beaten, stoned, imprisoned, shipwrecked. His "thorn in the flesh" tormented him and his enemies were such that he lived continuously under the threat of death. But there was something on the inside of him that prompted gratitude.

We too live with disappointments, failures, sicknesses, and sorrows that we are not able to control.  We can't control what life brings us, but we can control what we will do with what life sends our way.

What you look for in life, you tend to find, and it's all too easy to only give thanks when life is filled with blessings, and I certainly hope we do that.  But Paul suggests that we Christians have a reason to give thanks even in times of difficulty, because God is here, because He is loving and powerful, and because we trust that He is at work in our lives for good.

If what we look for is what we find, do you look for blessings? Do you recognize them when you see them and then believe that every good thing in life comes as a gift from God? Do you see the glass half-empty or half-full?  And do you look for and accentuate the deprivations of life, or the blessings of life?  If you don't have the right stuff on the inside, you won't be able to see it on the outside.

There are people who live in very favorable circumstances, yet are not very thankful nor grateful as they complain about the life they have been given.

At the same time, there are those who experience problem after problem, yet they live in perpetual gratitude for the blessings they have received as they joyfully and expectantly await further expressions of God's love.

We cannot explain either the presence or the absence of gratitude by looking only at circumstances because gratitude has far more to do with the inside than with the outside.

No matter where you go, no matter what you do, it is you who brings your values, your perceptions, your expectations. And generally, what you look for, you will find and your expectations will help to make happen.

Therefore, happiness, fulfillment, thanksgiving, and gratitude in life have far more to do with what you bring than with what you find.

That's why the words of the old gospel song, to "Count your blessings, name them one by one," is practical advice.  Once you start looking for blessings and giving thanks for blessings, that very act helps to multiply the blessings! So in every circumstance, if you say to yourself again and again that God is in the business of bringing something good out of all areas of life, and if you truly believe that, you will have something to be thankful for in every circumstance of life and you can decide to give thanks not only in good times, but also in bad.

You can choose every day to Praise Him and Give thanks in all circumstances of life!

What Am I Thankful For?

I am thankful to my God for family and the people who love me and bring me joy, support and lift me up, and those who walk beside me with Jesus.

I am thankful that God has allowed me to go through difficulties that have caused me to seek Him and grow in faith by the Holy Spirit.

I am thankful as I spend time in God's Word that He reveals more of His great love for me  and that He speaks to my heart.  I'm now learning  to see myself through the eyes of grace because of Jesus' death and resurrection. He delights in me!

Enjoy our Wild Rice and Sausage Dressing

Wild Rice and Sausage Dressing

Everyone has their favorite dressing recipe, but sometimes it's just fun to mix things up!  This year, stir in a little wild rice and water chestnuts to make this flavorful dressing that will add to any Thanksgiving dinner.

 Ingredients:

  • 1-16 oz loaf bakery Italian bread
  • 1 -32 oz can of low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • 1 cup cooked wild rice
  • 1 - 8 oz can sliced water chestnuts, drained and chopped
  • 1 pound bulk pork sausage, browned and drained
  • 1 cup chopped toasted pecans, chopped finely

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease and flour a 13 x 9 baking dish

Directions:

Preheat oven to 250 degrees.  Cut bread into 1/2 inch cubes.  Place in a single layer on baking sheets.  Bake in preheated oven about 40 minutes, stirring often, until bread is dried.  Transfer to a large bowl.

Increase oven temperature to 350 degrees.  In another large bowl, whisk together broth, melted butter and seasoning.  Pour over bread cubes, toss until bread is evenly moistened. Stir in wild rice, water chestnuts, pecans and sausage.  Transfer to a 2-quart casserole dish spared with nonstick cooking spray.  Bake uncovered for 40 minutes or until golden brown. Top with a sprig of sage.
