   CREATING YOUR BEST LIFE

"Oh, that my steps might be steady, keeping to the course you set."

Psalm 199:5 The Message

What if every day we woke up and said

we were going to do our best?  What would it look like if we were gentle with our spouse, more supportive to our children, hardworking at our jobs, creative in our cooking, compassionate in our friendships, and thoughtful in our words?

To begin to live a better life, your best life, means effort on your part.  With God's help, we can change the course of the path we are on, making it better, if we make an effort, our best effort, each and every day.

This month, I am challenging each one of us to do our best

... to make life better.

For the next 7 days, work on these top 7 Personal Spiritual Practices that will help you towards living a better life.

1. Talk Less ... Listen More-be a better listener!

2. Use What You Have-don't shop!  Use what you have.

3. Be Generous-give to church and people in need

4. Work on Slowing Down-purposely put yourself at the end of a long line and work on your patience.

5. Drive Without Sound-we are surrounded with noise all the time ... practice being quiet.

6. Don't Use Media-give yourself a break from iphones, ipads,  & computers.

7. Bless Others-call or email someone, give someone a ride, visit a shut-in, bake for your neighbors.

Begin to work on being the best version of you.

It's never too late to make changes.  Start today.  Start living your best life!

Spirtual Lifestyle: God's Plans for You

By: Pastor Frank Riley, Chaplin, United States Navy

"For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future!"

So reads Jeremiah 29:11 and so comes a reminder as you head into a new year.

Have you ever thought about it? The Lord has plans for you! No matter how chaotic or by chance the world around you seems, the Scriptures give you the great comfort of knowing that God has a specific path for you. Yet so often as we go through life, we give little thought to a specific plan and direction for our life. As a result, we often move from month to month and year to year just listlessly floating along.

But get this, if as believers we buy into God's promise that there is a plan, then for us, we are empowered to look to the future and to seek His guidance and will for each day and more than that into the future of all the days God has given us.

For I know the plans I have for youSo as you move into 2014, here is the challenge, look ahead and pray for wisdom from the Lord to make plans for the year. And this year, as you do, begin each objective seeking to make God a part of the plan in full faith and confidence that you are already part of plan far greater than you can think or imagine, a plan authored and dreamed for you by the Creator of the universe Himself!

Spirtual Lifestyle:  Prayer

By Director of Prayer Support, Kathleen Sogge

We live in such a fast pace and I find myself trying to get ten times the things done, in half the time. It causes a lot of pressure & stress.  But when we lift our requests to God, we remember we are not facing the days alone.

Today take a few minutes to pray that God will show you and your family, His will and favor for 2014.  And above all things ... remember to meet God in prayer!

"The Lord is with you when you are with Him, If You seek Him, He will be found by You." II Chronicles 15:2

Proverbs 16:9

"We plan the way we want to live but only God makes us able to live it."

Spiritual Lifestyle: Worship

By Tony Guerrero

(Former Dir. of Worship & Creative Arts, Saddleback Church, Orange, CA)

Worship is, at its core, honoring God.

Thus,

When you serve someone in need, you are worshipping.

When you talk to God, you are worshipping.

When you intentionally guard your heart and your eyes from evil, you are worshipping.

When you avoid gossip, you are worshipping.

When you lovingly correct your children, you are worshipping.

When you conduct your business ethically, you are worshipping.

When you mourn and cry out to God, you are worshipping.

When you love others, you are worshipping.

But, in all these and many other possible examples, the worship isn't just the act, but an intentional committing of your thoughts and deeds to honoring God. Basically, whenever we live our lives -every moment, thought and deed - as an act of worship dedicated solely to God, we are living our best life.

Riley Erickson Emotional Lifestyle:  Embracing Creativity By: Riley Erickson

It's probably fair to say that most of us enjoy an escape to the movie theater when time affords, or have found our fingers nudging up the volume to fully experience the aural delight of a favorite musician. Creative work, in its vast variety, has the capability to entertain, but can also inspire and, in some instances, completely amaze us.

Stepping into everyday life, we may find it convenient to be complacent with the complexity and vibrancy of the creative work that God has graciously allowed us to be a part of. Dwelling on His creation for too long can leave us perplexed, and we are at times averse to admitting such. God's creation has some similarities to movies and music inasmuch as we are generally unaware of the work going on behind the scenes to make everything come together harmoniously. As we head into the start of a new year, let's afford the time to escape into the most creative work ever made; the world around us!

Healthy Lifestyle:  Your Best Start to a New Year

By Dr. Deb Peterson

As we get ready to start 2014, most of us create New Year's resolutions that may include taking better care of ourselves. With that in mind, here are a few health tips to think about as we start the New Year.

1.   Remember the hierarchy that God wants us to follow: God first, self second, spouse third, children fourth, and others fifth.

Putting God first means taking daily time alone with Him in His Word.

2.  Take care of your physical self. This means taking time to exercise for 30-45 minutes at least 3 to 4 days per week. If you can't afford chunks of time that large, then try 20 minutes 5 to 6 days per week. This means getting 6-7 hours of sleep each night, drinking plenty of water (at least 64 ounces per day) and watching your caloric intake (for most women, no more than 1500-1800 calories daily and for most men, 1800-2200 calories daily). Take time for family meals.

Dr. Deb 3.   Repetition helps build healthy habits and makes them feel "natural." Hang in there if changes are hard to make initially.

God wants us to be our best selves so that we can live our Best Life for Him! Happy New Year!

Yours in Health & in Him,

Dr. Deb

Healthy Lifestyle:  Financially Responsible
Valerie McKay
Question:  I received a $1,500.00 year-end bonus.  Should I put this in my savings, or should I pay off some credit card debt?By Valerie McKay

I would work on paying down debt.  I personally recommend Dave Ramsey's "Debt Snowball Method"

1)  Don't worry about interest rate and stop using credit cards

2) Create a budget and find some areas for cost savings. ($100)

3) Take the card with the SMALLEST BALANCE  & pay minimum monthly payment (say its $200) + the extra $100. Pay the $300 towards that card until it's paid off. Still pay the minimum monthly payment on the higher balance card during this time.

4) Once the 1st card is paid off, apply that $300 that you are paying on the low balance card PLUS the minimum monthly payment of the high balance card (say its $400) and pay it every month. You will be applying $700 a month until it's all gone.

5) Take that $700 and start applying it to the minimum car payment that you have. Pretty soon you will have your car paid off and you can start focusing on other loans or your mortgage.

End result: Debt free except for your mortgage, all because you found an extra $100 from doing a budget and cutting expenses! Be committed and disciplined and you can achieve financial freedom from debt!

Family Lifestyle:  Molding Godly Children

By:  Dr. Ryan M. Walker, DDS

(Ryan owns a private practice specializing in endodontics (root canal dentist) in St. Joseph, Missouri. He has been married to his wife, Jeanne, for sixteen years and has six wonderful children. Besides private practice Ryan is also a member of his church's worship team, on the Board of Directors for the local Pregnancy Resource Clinic, and a volunteer for many local ministries).

As a Christian, there is nothing more exciting than being a part of sharing the gospel and helping to fulfill The Great Commission. This is certainly something we encourage our family to do throughout our daily lives here in America, but there it is truly special to serve outside your comfort zone, and away from home with your children by your side.  It is an amazing experience!

This December, my family journeyed to Santa Cruz Del Quiche, Guatemala. It was a mission trip that changed lives, allowed our hearts to be molded, and opened our eyes. We knew we were intentionally going to bless others, but we weren't prepared for all the blessings God would pour back on us through the love of the Guatemalan people.

This year I took my three oldest children, Faith (13), Grace (10), and Lilly (8), and as an added blessing, my Mom was able to go with us. The mission team consisted of 12 adults and 14 children.

When we arrived in Guatemala, we met up with about ten of our Guatemalan friends who helped us with transportation and translation. The 8 day trip consisted of helping facilitate a youth camp for local teens, delivering a vacation Bible school alongside a partnering local church, evangelism, and celebrating Christmas with the orphans at Casa De Mi Padre.

The first day we met at 2:45 am and got to Guatemala City at 12:00 pm. After a six hour bus ride we finally made it to our destination in Santa Cruz.  Even though everyone could have easily gone to sleep, we wanted to stop at the orphanage and see the children there.

Casa De Mi Padre is an orphanage run by our friend from Saint Joseph, Missouri, Shane Sanderson. Shane has 23 of the most precious little children I have ever seen in his orphanage. When we arrived, the Guatemalan children were dressed in their finest, standing in front of the orphanage to greet us as they sang, "Big House" in English.

When they finished, they made a mad dash for us and showered us with warm hugs. After a few hugs I had to step back and take in the moment. I could see the amazement on my children's faces. I could tell that they were surprised that the orphans were so loving, and I could see their initial worries about not being able to communicate with the children, now melting away. It was beautiful!

For the next three days our team split up to run the camp and VBS. Half of us slept at the camp and the other half in town. During the day the VBS team would work at the local church and then head out to the camp at 5:00. My family was on the VBS team. We had the amazing opportunity to share the gospel using the wordless book and the evangecube.

Some of our favorite times were craft times, drama times, and the long walks back and forth from the church to the local school holding hands and just enjoying each other's company. These young children who are filled with love, have a strong desire to learn about Christ and God's purpose for their lives.

The camp workers were very busy serving the youth meals, delivering Bible quizzing and small group devotions, along with an activity time. In the evenings we would all come together for supper and a worship service (in Spanish but translated for us into English.)

Our final night of the camp was moving, with many of the Guatemalan children responding to Christ, during the altar call, and everyone encircling them and praying for them. With tears in our eyes and praises on our lips, I looked around the room in amazement to see what God would let a small group of believers become a part of, while so far from home.

Christmas at the orphanage was Thursday night. We spent all day playing with the orphans, and while they left to play soccer, we worked at unloading the gifts we brought from the US. These are not just gifts we purchased, but we were transporting gifts from many different supporters of Casa De Mi Padre (you can google Child Rescue)! We had the awesome blessing of delivering the gifts to the children and celebrating Christmas with them.

Most of the children at the orphanage have a past that would make you cringe. There are many of them that have never celebrated Christmas until arriving at the orphanage. One of the girls turned to our friend in tears and said that no one had ever given her a gift before. That night was truly amazing. We shared a Christmas meal, a Christmas play, they unwrapped gifts, and even performed their Christmas program for us. I think they thought they were blessed by all the gifts . . . wow if they only knew what a blessing it was for us to be there with them.

I wish I could share everything I saw God doing in Santa Cruz. I witnessed my 8 year old daughter Lilly, boldly share the gospel in a crowded market using a translator while 15 people listened as hundreds of people passed her by.

Children and adults accepted Christ as the Gospel was shared. Friendships were made that were eternal and will never be forgotten. God is moving in the hearts of people all across the world right now. I am just so grateful that He allowed us to be a part of His work in Guatemala.

I hope you find your Guatemala in 2014.

God Bless,

Ryan
